The patent case between Apple and Samsung--you know, the one where if Apple wins, the company assumes total dominance of the mobile device market and Samsung dries up and blows away--is a bare-knuckle legal slugfest, and it recently took an interesting turn. Samsung brought forth videotaped testimony from one Roger... Read more...
The Samsung vs. Apple patent trial is leading to some seriously juicy findings. Findings that no doubt would have never, ever been made public if this had not come down to a jury. In fact, it's crazy to us that both Samsung and Apple let it get this far. Why not settle outside of the courtroom instead of having... Read more...
If there was any doubt that Google is determined to make awkward, inadvertent eye contact the new version of mistakenly conversing with someone who’s actually on a call using a Bluetooth unit, that can be laid to rest with the awarding of Google’s latest patent: an eye-tracking system to unlock a computer... "Rampant patent litigation." If you've followed consumer technology for any small amount of time, you'd know that it's happening. Apple vs. Samsung. Yahoo vs. Facebook. HTC, Motorola, Google -- you name it. If it's a large tech company, it's probably worried somewhat about being sued over patents. Companies that are... Read more...
In a world currently full of nasty, technological patent wars amongst tech giants, there's been at least one instance of hand-shaking this week. Facebook and Yahoo, who were previously tied up in a bitter battle over patents, have seemingly worked out their differences. The pair has launched a "strategic alliance" in order to resolve the ongoing... Read more...
There have been plenty of legal disputes between Apple and Samsung, one of which recently affected the Galaxy Nexus. At the end of last month, a U.S. District Judge in San Jose ruled the Galaxy Nexus infringed on some of Apple's patents. As a result of this ruling, the Galaxy Nexus was banned from being sold in the U.S.   This particular... Read more...
Yikes. If you've been considering the purchase of a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, you may want to act fast. Apple has just landed a huge legal victory in its fight against Samsung, as a U.S. District Judge in San Jose ruled that the Galaxy Nexus infringed as Apple had been claiming. It's all over a patent spat, but this ruling is fairly serious. So... Read more...
Intel has spent $375 million today. On a new chip factory? A new fabrication plant? R&D? Nope. Patents. Lots, and lots, of patents. With IP litigation in the technology realm reaching crazy new heights (just look at Samsung vs. Apple for instance), the one that tech companies suddenly crave are patents. The more... Read more...
People have long accused competitive notebook manufacturers for copying Apple's MacBook Air design in some way or another, oftentimes shamelessly so. HP's Envy line looks entirely too much like a MacBook Pro, for example. And with the swarm of Ultrabooks taking over, well, let's just say there's some design influence going on there, arguably.... Samsung and Apple. It's the tech war of the decade, and the two titans are at each other's throat in the public eye. Despite doing business with one another in backrooms for chips and whatnot, there's no love lost when it comes to design and IP. And even though a judge has ordered Samsung and Apple executives to get... Read more...
Hey, are you excited about the launch of HTC's One X and want to purchase one? Tough cookies if you live the U.S.. Sales of the new phone are being held up because of a required customs review after HTC was on the losing end of a patent dispute with Apple last year. The same thing applies to HTC's EVO 4G LTE... Patents seemingly make the world go 'round, particularly in the technology space these days. Android, iOS, Samsung, Google, AOL, Microsoft -- hardly a day goes by without someone's patent portfolio making the (positive or negative) news. Today, Microsoft and Facebook are the ones in the spotlight, announcing an... Read more...
AOL is planning to sell over 800 patents and their related applications to Microsoft in a deal that is valued at $1.056 billion in cash. AOL has said a "significant" portion of the money from the deal will go to shareholders. The sale is expected to be completed by the end of this year. AOL will keep a patent... Read more...
A new iMac Touch model could be in the works over at Apple. Maybe. That's the speculation after the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple that describes a desktop system with virtual control on a touchscreen. It's far too early to tell if that's what Apple is up to, but with so many all-in-one (AIO) PCs... Read more...
Remember Real Player? Evidently that's still around, and Intel -- of all companies -- is interested. RealNetworks just announced that it has signed an agreement to sell a significant number of its patents and its next generation video codec software to Intel Corporation for a purchase price of $120 million. Under... Read more...
Well, well -- Microsoft seems to be making more money these days from Android than their own mobile OS. As it turns out, Microsoft has good reason to demand royalties from Android, and so any major company selling Android devices is ripe to be plucked for cash. This week, Microsoft and LG hammered out a patent agreement that covers Android... Read more...
You've probably never driven your car off a cliff or walked aimlessly into a 30-foot hole in the middle of a construction site, but perhaps your travels have taken you "through an unsafe neighborhood" or "in an open area that is subject to harsh temperatures." One of Microsoft's latest patents -- No. 8,090,532 -- aims... Read more...
Motorola has a bit of good news, and a lot of bad news to swallow tonight. The International Trade Commission, which has been super busy of late, has just ruled that Motorola Mobility didn't violate six of seven Microsoft patents. But the bad news? That one. The one they did violate could cause them quite a bit of... Read more...
So, this is interesting. While Samsung and Apple are spending untold amounts of money on legal battles across the globe, Samsung has decided to not wage those same wars with another tech monolith: Microsoft. Microsoft has been on a warpath of late, tracking down companies (mostly who sell Android-based products) that touch Microsoft's patents... Read more...
Google only just finished acquiring Motorola Mobility, but the company is already on the war-path to a patent suit. While Apple is going for Samsung's throat in Europe, Google has decided to transfer nine patents acquired from Motorola, Palm and Openwave to HTC, which uses the Android OS on many devices and is currently besieged... Apple's a huge target. No question about it. And patent trolls have a thing for going after monumental companies -- companies that they know will simply settle out if really put to the fire. We aren't making any accusations against Personal Audio, but after winning $8 million in a case against Apple related to playlists, the company is hitting... Read more...
Nokia on Tuesday announced that it had settled its patent fight with Apple, which was about 1 1/2 years old. Nokia first sued Apple in October of 2009. The settlement includes a one-time lump sum payment from Apple to Nokia, along with future royalties. Deutsche Bank analyst Kai Korschelt said in a research note that Nokia is likely to receive...
