Google today launched its newest flagship Pixel phones, and we've already posted a Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro guided tour with a handful of photos, a hands-on video, and loads of specifications and features to digest. During today's event, Google also shared some more details about Tensor, and what it aims to achieve. Benchmark wins are not necessarily one of the goals, though this is still an interesting chunk of silicon. For its first-ever mobile chip designed in-house, Google is hanging its hat on machine learning/AI capabilities. Enabling new experiences was purportedly the main reason why Google embarked down this road, rather than tapping a third-party, as it has always done in the past. "We... Read more...
We have been eagerly anticipating the launch of Google's newest flagship smartphones, the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6, and the big day has finally arrived. Ahead of the launch event, we managed to get our hands on both models to give you a first look at Google's latest handsets. Analysis and benchmarks will come at a later date. For now, we are able to share a handful of shots from our photo shoot, as well as a video tour, and list out the full specifications of both devices. Let's get rolling. Google says it "completely reimagined" the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6, both inside and out. As you can see in rear shot above, both models sport similar industrial designs, with prominent camera bumps on the... Read more...
Google’s flagship Pixel 6 and 6 Pro may be more affordable than previously reported, according to a recent post on Twitter. This should come as amazing news to Pixel fans awaiting the release of the 6 and 6 Pro with Google’s new Tensor chip, it's first home-brewed SoC for mobile phones. Google is set to reveal all the remaining details of its upcoming Pixel 6 and 6 Pro tomorrow, October 19, during as scheduled event. Earlier reports had hinted that the phones' pricing was going to be more in line with other competitor’s flagship smartphones. The rumored pricing had the Pixel 6 starting at $749 and the Pixel 6 Pro at $1,049. However, a leak on Twitter tells a slightly different... Read more...
The Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are scheduled to launch on October 19 and more leaks are emerging on its flagship Tensor chip performance. For now, it seems Tensor trails its rivals (Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and Samsung’s Exynos) by a good bit in multi-threaded performance, while being a bit more competitive in single-threaded performance, according to a fresh set of leaked benchmarks. A recent Geekbench 5 run for the Google Pixel 6 with a Tensor chip has emerged. The version of the phone that was listed on Geekbench had 8GB of RAM and included a Mali G78 GPU. Benchmark scores shared showed a single-core score of 1,037 and a multi-core score of 2,862. Have a look... Click to Enlarge (Source:... Read more...
Android users, specifically Google Pixel users, may soon have a way to purchase a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro in a manner much like Apple One. In a new retail leak, the existence of a so-called Pixel Pass service has emerged. Unlike Apple One, though, this bundle will presumably include a Pixel 6 phone, in addition to various subscriptions services. The services that may be included in the Pixel Pass are Google One, Play Pass, YouTube Premium or YouTube Music, and Google Fi connectivity. These are all purportedly going to be bundled with either a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro handset. Pricing is still a mystery but is most likely going to be a US offering for now. Google Fi needs to be activated in the US,... Read more...
Google is set to launch the Pixel 6 and it has a focus on delivering perhaps the biggest camera overhaul the lineup has seen to date. Google has been a leader in terms of cell phone camera innovation, and now they are once again pushing the envelope with a new feature called the "Magic Eraser," which may even leave Apple iPhone users a bit envious. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are both going to include a 50MP primary sensor that Google says can capture 150 percent more light compared to what was in the Pixel 5. The new sensor is indeed larger than its predecessor and a bigger sensor leads to better low light pictures and natural bokeh (background blur). The Pixel 6 Pro will also have a 12MP ultrawide... We now have an official launch date for Google's flagship Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro Android 12 smartphones. In a tweet this afternoon, Google revealed that the new devices would debut at an online event on October 19th at 1 pm ET. Google first announced the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro in early August, and the October 19th launch has been rumored since early September. We'd imagine this date will also closely align with the public availability of Android 12 for existing Pixel smartphones. The Pixel 6 Family Will Debut Google's New Tensor SoC The centerpiece of the new Pixel 6 family will be Google's new custom Tensor SoC, which Samsung manufactures. According to numerous benchmark and specs leaks, Tensor... Read more...
Google announced this week that Android 12 has been released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). This announcement comes after Google championed that over 225,000 people participated during the developer/beta phase to submit nearly 50,000 bug reports to help polish the mobile operating system before release.  Although Android 12 has is now available under the AOSP, it will officially roll out to Google Pixel phones in the next few weeks. Samsung Galaxy, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi devices will receive the update later this year. Android 12 comes with an updated UI, and users can expect to see refreshed app widgets that make them more useful, beautiful,... Read more...
Google's bet on a custom processor for its upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro flagship smartphones is probably the most interesting phone news for a while, especially considering how the iPhone 13 went. Official details on the so-called "Tensor" system-on-a-chip (SoC) are basically non-existent, but leaks abound. Supposedly, the Tensor will include two ARM Cortex-X1 cores, two Cortex-A76 cores, and then four low-power Cortex-A55 cores. In theory, having two big X1 cores could give it a considerable performance advantage over competitors like the Snapdragon 888, which has a single Cortex-X1, three Cortex-A78s, and four Cortex-A55s. Theory doesn't necessarily align with reality, unfortunately. The... Read more...
Now the Apple iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro hype train has slowed down, all attention in the smartphone realm is shifting towards Google's Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The two smartphones mark Google's triumphant return to the flagship Android smartphone space after playing it safe in the mid-range market with the Pixel 5 in 2020. We now have some newly leaked information surrounding the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro regarding pricing and a potential launch date. When it comes to pricing, Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh said in early August, "We've definitively not been in the flagship tier for the past couple years; this will be different. It will certainly be a premium-priced product." M. Brandon Lee... Read more...
When Google announced the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro in early August, the company said that the flagship smartphones would be powered by an in-house designed Tensor SoC. Unfortunately, Google didn't provide us with any specifications for the chip, other than that Samsung would manufacture it. Now, thanks to leaker Digital Chat Station, we're learning that Tensor could be a performance powerhouse thanks to its core configuration compared to existing flagship SoCs like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. The Snapdragon 888 features a single Cortex-X1 prime core clocked at 2.84GHz, three additional Cortex-A78 performance cores clocked at up to 2.42GHz, and four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores that can run at... Google recently launched its Pixel 5a mid-range 5G smartphone a few weeks ago, but the company isn't done yet. It still has to release the flagship Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, the flag bearers for the upcoming Android 12 operating system. Although Google previously showed us slick renders of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, it has posted a quick teaser video showing some brief glimpses of the phones being used in the real world. The fast-paced video is looking to appeal to young adults constantly on the move, as it asks, "What if your phone saw you for who you are?" It goes on to say that the Pixel 6 is constantly "learning, evolving and adapting" to your needs. We should also mention that Google's... Read more...
For those that were expecting to get your hands on Google's next-generation Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones soon, we have some bad news for you. If the latest reporting from Jon Prosser is accurate, the new flagship smartphones won't launch until October 28th. To put that date in perspective, the Pixel 5 launched on October 15th, 2020, and the Pixel 4 launched on October 24th, 2019. So, the late October launch isn't unprecedented, but it is a bit disappointing given that Google already showed its hand with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on August 2nd. Prosser's reporting also shoots down the previously rumored September 13th launch, which would have seen the new Pixel debut a day before Apple's... Read more...
Google has only casually mentioned the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6, a pair of upcoming handsets that will sport a new custom system-on-chip (SoC) that the company is calling Tensor, which is supposedly the "biggest innovation in Pixel to date." But in what can possibly be classified as an inadvertent leak, Google may have also confirmed an under-display fingerprint reader will adorn the Pixel 6 series as well. The Pixel 6 series is aiming for flagship status, as opposed to the Pixel 5a, which plants itself firmly into mid-range territory (it's a battery life beast, as we noted in our recent Pixel 5a review). You can pre-order the Pixel 5a right now, ahead of its August 26 release. Meanwhile, Google... Read more...
Google has a penchant for discontinuing its flagship Pixel smartphones long before its immediate successor is launched and established in the marketplace. Last year, the company discontinued the Pixel 4 nearly two months before the Pixel 5 was announced. Now, Google has announced that the Pixel 5 is being terminated prior to the Pixel 6 family's release this fall. A quick visit to the official Google Store shows that the Pixel 5 is currently out of stock. Unfortunately, the same is also true for the Pixel 4a 5G. However, we can understand the lack of inventory for the latter phone, as its replacement, the Pixel 5a 5G, has already been announced and is available for preorder. "With our current... Read more...
Google is trucking along with the development of its Android 12 operating system, and today it released the Beta 4 update. According to the Android 12 release schedule posted below, this month's release is the first that puts the mobile operating system in the "platform stability" phase. In other words, Google is no longer focused on adding new features to Android 12 and is instead working to make sure that outstanding bugs are squashed as we move on to release candidate/final public builds. However, we should back up the statement slightly by mentioning that Google did one add one minor update to user Ad IDs in Google Play services. "Android 12 includes behavior changes to help improve performance,... Read more...
Google yesterday made a surprise announcement of its upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones. In a market where most smartphones are all starting to look alike, Google's new Pixel 6 family charts a different design course -- at least from the back -- with its wide camera pod and two-tone finishes. However, that fresh design and the advanced hardware lurking underneath won't come cheap. On two separate occasions, Google confirmed that the Pixel 6 smartphones would carry premium pricing, making them far more expensive than the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G. "We've definitively not been in the flagship tier for the past couple years, this will be different," said Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh... Read more...
Google today announced its Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones, which are the latest flagship Android devices to come from the search giant. Interestingly enough, the leaked renders that have flooded the internet over the past few months were incredibly accurate, as what you see in this article is matches up precisely with what was previously presented. The design of the Pixel 6 family is a break from traditional smartphone design, with a black horizontal band going across the upper back of the smartphone that houses the cameras. The black bar bisects a two-tone colored finish on the back, which is a nice break from the monotony that has encompassed smartphone design in recent years. Google's... Read more...
Google over the past several years has struck a balance between its various services and offering consumer hardware designs, the latter of which has been increasingly expanding (in part through acquisitions). So what does the future hold? Alphabet (Google's parent company) CEO Sundar Pichai made some interesting comments about the company's hardware play, and specifically how it relates to its Pixel lineup. It starts with Android 12, which is in beta testing at the moment in anticipation of a finalized release later this year alongside the Pixel 6 series. "Android 12 will, of course, be central to Google's phone devices. I'm very excited by our fall lineup, which will showcase Android 12 and... Read more...
By now, we think we have a pretty good idea of what the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will look like at launch. Several rumors have coalesced around a unique design with a multi-colored back, large camera bump, and premium materials. Now, gadget leaker Jon Prosser alleges to have a bigger scoop on the specifications for the two smartphones. According to the report, the Pixel 6 will feature a 6.4-inch AMOLED display, with an 8MP selfie camera nestled within a hole-punch cutout. Out back, expect to see a 50MP wide-angle primary sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor. In addition, Google is reportedly using its first custom SoC, condemned Whitechapel, for the smartphone paired with 8GB of RAM and... Read more...
Although the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are the most highly anticipated smartphones coming from Google this year, the company also promised to deliver a new mid-range smartphone for consumers. After a rumor claimed that the Pixel 5a was canceled for this year, Google quickly made the surprise decision to confirm months in advance that it was working to deliver the smartphone later this year for the United States and Japan. Today, we're learning the Pixel 5a has made a critical stop on its way to the U.S. market: it visited the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Three models in total -- G1F8F, GR0M2, and G4S1M -- appeared at the FCC, all of which feature sub-6GHz 5G bands. However, given that... Read more...
Google's upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro Android flagships are still months away from launching, but leaked information on both devices is coming in at a furious pace. Over the past few weeks, we've seen convincing renders of the devices, alleged specs, and reports on possible features. Today, however, we're learning about a new feature that could shortly be on the way for all currently-supposed members of the Pixel family. The folks over at XDA-Developers tore down the latest version of the Pixel Tips app from the Google Play Store. After performing some code sleuthing, a new "CameraAstrotimelapseSettingController" class was discovered within the app. Google Pixel's current astrophotography... Read more...
