You can never have too many controller buttons, right? Perhaps that's the mantra over at Sony, as the company has just announced a new official accessory for the PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 controller.  The accessory is called the Back Button Attachment, and it adds to more programmable buttons to the -- you guessed it -- back of the DualShock 4 controller. The Back Button Attachment plugs into the bottom of the controller and provides a passthrough for the 3.5mm headphone jack. The actual buttons are more like paddles, and you have the ability to remap them on-the-fly to suit whichever game you're currently playing. Sony even allows you to store button profiles for up to three... Read more...
Google's ambitious cloud gaming platform called Stadia is only a few days away from launching to the public, and there are still many questions that have yet to be answered. That said, Google did answer some of them during an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit yesterday. One of them was in regards to which controllers will work with Stadia. Following the AMA session, Google updated its support pages to list exactly which controllers will (and will not) work with Stadia. Sony's DualShock 4 is one of them, as is Microsoft's Xbox One controller, both of which support USB and Bluetooth connectivity with Stadia on the desktop and through Pixel devices. Here's a look at the official list... Source:... Read more...
Sony tacked on an additional 2.8 million PlayStation 4 console sales during its second quarter for fiscal 2019 (July through September). Those sales bring the cumulative tally to 102.8 million PS4 units to date, making it more successful (in terms of units sold) than the original PlayStation, and second only to the PlayStation 2. Second place among four generations of PlayStation consoles is nothing to sneeze at—the PS2 sold 155 million units during its lifetime, a record that might never be broken at Sony. Incidentally, the PS4 not climbed to second place among Sony's own game consoles, it also edged ahead of the Nintendo Wii, which has seen 101.6 million unit sales. This achievement is... Read more...
What would an arcade fight stick be without the actual stick? Peripheral maker Razer came up with an answer—it's the Raion, a new gamepad that "brings arcade stick controls to the palm of your hand." As such, it's a fight pad, and it is designed for both the PlayStation 4 consoles and Windows PCs. Razer said it built the Raion from the ground up for fighting games. While not specifically mentioned, that translates to high profile titles like Mortal Kombat 11 and the Street Fighter series (among others). From my vantage point, the renders look a bit similar to Microsoft's Xbox One controllers, in terms of the general shape. The Raion is a different beast, though. It features a 6-button layout... The Party Feature Update makes it easier for players who enjoy playing along with their friends and community members to set up a Party. The updated Party feature includes key changes like the maximum number of Party users increased to 16 people. Network connectivity has been improved. Sony has improved Audio quality and... Call it one small step for PlayStation 4 owners and one giant leap for gamers, as Sony has opened the door for cross platform gameplay. Or shall we say, opened it a bit wider—Sony actually relented to Epic Games around this same time a year ago by allowing an open beta enabling cross-play in Fortnite between the PS4 and Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. At first, Sony was resistant to the idea, citing the PS4's supposed superiority over other platforms as the reason why. Sony also admitted at the time that it was not a technical barrier preventing it from embracing open play, just that the "PlayStation [4] is the best place to play." Sony would later backpedal by saying "enabling... Read more...
Sandbox game fans are in for a treat. Astroneer is coming to the PlayStation 4 on November 15th. The announcement was accompanied by an adorable trailer featuring a PlayStation 4 controller. Players can preorder the game now through the PlayStation Store for $29.99 USD. Preorders also include the Astroneer soundtrack, which typically costs an additional $5. The game requires a 5GB minimum save size and players will need a PlayStation Plus membership to access online multiplayer. It is unclear at the moment if crossplay will be an option. Astroneer is a space sandbox adventure game. Players are dropped onto a procedurally generated planet and are able to gather resources, craft items, and explore... Read more...
Sony is apparently in the giving mood, as some PlayStation 4 owners on Reddit can attest. How so? Apparently the electronics company has given a away a bunch free copies of Astro Bot Rescue Mission to registered PS4 owners, with "no strings" attached. The reason why, however, is not immediately clear (though we have a theory). "No catch, not strings... we're just giving you a free PlayStation VR game. Download the award-winning Astro Bot Rescue Mission... and blast off on an epic adventure to save Captain Astro's missing crew-bots. Use your exclusive voucher code at PlayStation Store now," the email reads. What makes this surprise gift so nifty is not just that it's an out-of-the-blue freebie,... Read more...
Having trouble convincing your console brothers and sisters how easy and rewarding it can be to assemble a PC? Find new friends! Just kidding (maybe). Rather than kick your console friends and family members to the curb, let them know that PC Building Simulator is now available on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch. That's right, the PC building sim has expanded its reach to all three major modern consoles, so even your controller-wielding buddies can assemble a faux PC. PC vs Console? Why should you have to choose! PC Building Simulator is now available on PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch! pic.twitter.com/7Mfi96u4yM — PC Building Simulator (@PCBuildingSim) August 13, 2019... The PlayStation 4 is nearing the end of its reign as the flagship current-generation gaming console from Sony. The company has already been talking up its PS5 game console and had promised that the PS5 would have an appealing price considering its performance. While the PS5 is on the way, the PS4 is still selling reasonably well, despite sales slowing somewhat. Sony's latest earnings report had some PS4 tidbits buried inside, and it was revealed that the console has now sold over 100 million units. Sony said that it sold 3.2 million PS4 consoles between March 31 and June 30 after announced that 96.8 million units had been sold to date in the previous quarter. With sales numbers for... WayForward is prepping a new entry in the long-running River City / Kunio-Kun series that will bring old-school, side-scrolling action to a new generation of gamers. Called River City Girls, the new game features a pair of female high school protagonists fighting through six regions of River City. Looking at the trailer, I'm somewhat reminded of the Double Dragon series of yesteryear. In River City Girls, however, Kyoko and Misako are attempting to rescue their kidnapped boyfriends, Kunio and Riki. Players can go at it solo, or enlist a friend for local co-op gameplay. Either way, you will be treated to 16-bit style graphics and an "epic synth-pop soundtrack" featuring NateWantsToBattle, Chipzel,... Read more...
PlayStation 4 players will be the first to receive additional content related to Activision's upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game that was just announced. Sony has an exclusivity agreement with Activision that will see PS4 owners have access to downloadable content (DLC) ahead of Xbox One and PC players. Sony confirmed the agreement in a reveal trailer for the game that was posted to its YouTube account on Thursday. Here's a look at the trailer... Towards the end of the video (starting at the 1min42sec mark), a slide appears indicating that new content will arrive "first on PS4," as shown at the top of this article. The narrator reads the line out loud. In the fine print, it's revealed... Read more...
The Nintendo Switch may be one of the fastest selling gaming consoles, but the Playstation 4 beats all others with its sheer numbers. Sony recently announced that they have so far cumulatively sold 94 million Playstation 4 consoles globally. This announcement comes on the heels of an incredibly successful holiday season for Sony. Sony shipped 8.1 million units during their third financial quarter. This was 0.9 million units fewer than last year, but still a substantial number considering the Playstation 4 was released over five years ago. Sony maintains that they will sell 17.5 million units by the end of the financial year (March 31st). The company’s holiday sales are no doubt partly due... Read more...
Gamers may already be looking forward to the next generation of game consoles with some rumors pointing to 8-12GB of RAM in the next-gen PlayStation and Xbox machines, but for now, we are stuck with current generation consoles. Sony has the runaway sales leader with the PS4. Sony recently announced the cumulative sales numbers for the PlayStation 4 as of the end of 2018, and the performance is impressive. Sony Interactive Entertainment says that during the 2018 holiday season it sold over 5.6 million PS4 units, and the massive holiday season pushed cumulative sales for the PS4 to 91.6 million units globally. Sony also gave up some details on software sales noting that over 50.7 million PS4 games... Read more...
The absolute worst time to buy a game console is right before the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales arrive in force. Pulling the trigger prematurely is a surefire way of having buyer's remorse. So, if you're in the market for a new game console, wait a few days. There are going to be discounts, including a bunch of PlayStation 4 deals, some of which Sony announced today. Starting with the core console, Sony will be serving up a new Marvel Spider-Man Standard Edition PS4 bundle for $199.99 USD ($259.99 CAN). Not to be confused with the limited edition themed bundle, this version sports a jet-black console with a matching DualShock 4 wireless controller and a physical copy of Marvel's Spider-Man... Sony sold more PlayStation 4 (PS4) hardware and software than it was anticipating during the company's fiscal second quarter ended September 30, 2018, and those additional sales helped catapult the Japanese electronic maker's three-month profit to just over $2.1 billion. This also prompted Sony to raise its full year forecast to $7.7 billion, up a whopping 30 percent for what it was forecasting in July. The PlayStation division, or "Games & Network Services (G&NS)" if we're being formal, led the way with nearly $5 billion in revenue, generating a profit of more than $800 million. Even more impressive is that the PS4 is raking in these kinds of numbers nearly five years after it was introduced.... Read more...
Users with too much time on their hands recently discovered a bug in the PlayStation 4 that could be exploited to crash the console. It was easy as sending a specific and malicious message to the unsuspecting PS4 user. After receiving widespread attention, Sony has gone and fixed the bug so all is apparently good in the world of PS4 gaming again. The exploit is similar to the types of text messaging bugs that have sometimes rocked mobile platforms, essentially tripping the device up. On mobile devices, it could be anything from generally unstable behavior, like freezing, or a full crash. The latter is what would happen to PS4 owners who received the aforementioned message. We've since fixed the... Read more...
PS4 gamers beware, a message is going around that will crash your console and potentially force you to perform a factory reset. Warnings on Reddit have highlighted the issue and have given PS4 gamers insight into how to protect themselves from the bug and recover if you are affected. The bug, in some instances, has been used during matches to cause the opposing team to crash and be unable to complete a match. The message received is pictured below, and the box with a question mark in it contains a null character that causes the PS4 to become unstable. Reddit users have given directions on how they have recovered from the crash. Some are having to factory reset their consoles, but some have been... Read more...
We're not ones to look a gift horse in the mouth, but when it comes to cross-play support in Fortnite, Sony needs to get its story straight on why exactly it has it taken so long to finally embrace the gamer-friendly feature. Were there technical barriers that stood in the way, or weren't there? The latest comments by Sony Worldwide Chairman Shawn Layden suggest it's the latter, even though that's not what Sony said before. Layden participated in a recent PlayStation blogcast, episode 308 titled "Wooooo!" At around the 12-minute 50-second mark, Layden talked about supporting cross-play in Fortnite on the PlayStation 4, a feature that gamers have been clamoring for, especially since Sony stood... It's finally happening. Sony, a company that is not known to back down from attacks on its arcane cross-play policies, has caved to pressure and will enable PlayStation 4 gamers to play against rival consoles with Fortnite. Sony has taken flak from gamers and industry figures (including Microsoft execs). Fortnite is the most popular game in the world, and the fact that Sony has been the lone holdout has angered many gamers. What was even more infuriating is the fact that progression and items/skins bought/accumulated on the PlayStation 4 could not be transferred to the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. After a "comprehensive evaluation process", Sony says that it will enable cross-play... Read more...
One of the big problems that subscribers of the Sony PlayStation Now service had was that the games were only available for streaming play. That could be an issue for users on metered internet connections or with spotty internet service. Sony has announced a big change to PlayStation Now with the addition of an option that will allow users to download games to their PS4 system. That means that they will be able to play both locally and offline with the same PS Now subscription. Sony says that "almost all" of the PS4 games on the service including popular titles like Bloodborne, God of War 3 Remastered, NBA 2K16, and Until Dawn are available for download. The PS Now line of PS2 games remastered... Read more...
Sony has not exactly been a champion of supporting multiplayer gameplay across different platforms, otherwise known as crossplay. If there was a time and place to reverse course, it would be now, in Fortnite, the world's most popular battle royale shooter. Sony is sticking to its guns, however, drawing ire from not just gamers, but also Microsoft. Fortnite is a veritable cash cow for developer Epic Games, and part of the game's success is its availability on so many different platforms—PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. And for the most part, players on one platform can play against people on another platform. That is, expect for PlayStation 4 owners, who can only play... Read more...
