It seems ridiculous that in this day and age of video gaming, cross-play support isn't a standard feature across the board. Things have improved, sure, but there is still a long way to go. One of the holdouts is Sony, and if you were hoping the company would change its mind in the wake of increased pressure, you're going to be disappointed. Cross-play just isn't something Sony feels compelled to promote at this point. The reason for this is almost definitely financial, though you won't hear Sony say that directly. Instead, Sony's new chief executive officer Kenichiro Yoshida emphasized at IFA 2018 that the PlayStation 4 offers the best experience for gamers, the insinuation being that it is somehow... Sony is billing its new Cloud Remote for PS4 as being simple to use, easy to program, and a compact accessory. It is also relatively affordable for what it can do, especially compared to ultra-advanced universal remotes like the higher end stuff Logitech offers. Part of what sets the Cloud Remote for PS4 apart, however, is that it is purpose built for the PS4 ecosystem (as its name implies). "The Cloud Remote for PS4 programs your remote for you. Programming the remote is straightforward with the downloadable PDP Cloud Remote App, which uses advanced Cloud technology to auto-detect devices connected to the PS4 for hassle-free remote programming. It’s super easy," Sony explains in a blog... Read more...
Much to the dismay of gamers, new and old, Nintendo abruptly stopped production of its wildly popular NES Classic Edition console last year before it had a chance to satiate demand. It was an unpopular decision, one that Nintendo rectified when it brought the throwback console back to life this past June. Nintendo made the right move, as evidenced by the sales—the NES Classic was the top selling game console in June, according to tracking data release by NPD Group. That is in terms of unit sales, and it is especially notable because it is the first time an NES system has led in monthly unit sales since NPD starting tracking such data way back in 1995, according to Mat Piscatella, an analyst... Sony has been come under increasing pressure due to its unflinching policy of blocking PlayStation 4 cross-play with other consoles (i.e. the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch). In the past, this policy has drawn complaints from gamers, but nothing like what we've seen with Fortnite. Gamer outrage has been immense since cross-play is not only impossible between the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, but cross-progression has also been banned.  Fortunately, it appears that Sony may be willing to cave in slightly when it comes to cross-play with the world's most popular game. Shawn Layden, who serves as President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, provided the following... Read more...
Are we having fun yet? E3 has not been a disappointment, with many of the big names coming out and announcing new games, products, and services. Count Sony among them. Fans of The Last of Us will be interested to know that developer Naughty Dog is working on a sequel for the PlayStation 4 console, and Sony showed off a gameplay trailer that lasted nearly 12 minutes long. Whether you are familiar with the original game or not, it's worth checking out. The trailer is primarily focused on Ellie, who is again played by actress and singer Ashley Johnson. It begins innocently enough with Ellie attending a party. She shares a kiss with another female on the dance floor, who tells Ellie everyone in attendance... Read more...
If you want to spark an intense debate among friends (and don't care about keeping them as such), just bring up any number of controversial political topics. Or if you really want to get in a heated exchange, talk about the merits of controller design and declare your allegiance to either Sony's DualShock 4 controller for the PlayStation 4 or Microsoft's Xbox One controller. For those who prefer the latter but own a PS4, SCUF Gaming has you covered with its new and customizable Vantage, a PS4 controller that takes several design cues from Microsoft's Xbox One Elite controller. I don't mean to spark a controller debate in these parts, but in case anyone is wondering, I prefer the feel of an Xbox... Read more...
It's no secret that the PlayStation 4 has been outselling the Xbox One during this console generation. Both consoles launched at around the same time way back in 2013, but Sony long ago proved that it had the upper hand this time around. In fact, Microsoft gave up trying to compete in the "numbers game" and stop disclosing sales figures for the Xbox One back in 2015. Now, thanks to statements made by Electronic Arts official during the company's investor conference call, we're getting a better idea of just how badly the PlayStation 4 is clobbering the Xbox One. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen made the following statement: "We expect sales of current-generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony to continue... Read more...
One of the barriers to VR gaming is the cost of entry. It's generally been cheaper to dive into VR on the console side of things versus buying an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive for use with a PC, but it is still not a cheap endeavor. In an effort to bring more people into the fold, and as a natural progression of niche market seeing some maturation, Sony is the slashing the starting price of its PlayStation VR bundles to $299.99 in the United States and Europe. "This new pricing provides an even greater value for PlayStation fans at a perfect time, with must-play PS VR titles like Moss and Sprint Vector. There is also plenty to look forward to this year like Firewall Zero Hour, Rick and Morty: Virtual... Read more...
Fortnite is bringing its cartoony visuals and battle royale platforms to mobile, and specifically to iOS and Android (in that order). When it arrives on mobile, Fortnite will support cross-platform play, allowing Xbox One, PC, Mac, and mobile users to play with and against one another. What about the PlayStation 4, you ask? Cross-platform play is being introduced to the PS4 version as well, except where it matters. Sony continues to be a buzzkill when it comes to cross-platform gameplay between the PS4 and Xbox One. That is unfortunate, though par for course when it comes to Sony and Microsoft letting their rivalry stand in the way of what consumers have been clamoring for. If you ask Microsoft,... Read more...
If you have been thinking about getting a game console, now is the time to pull the trigger. There are multiple sales out there, the latest of which is a flash sale in the PlayStation Store with Sony marking down a whole bunch of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 games by up to 70 percent. And by "a whole bunch" we mean well over 100 titles available at massive discounts, along with a collection of movies in standard definition and high definition. "Take a little trip to PS Store this weekend and set your peepers on discounted games like Overwatch Game of the Year Edition, Dragon Age: Inquisition Game of the Year Edition, Uncharted 4, and so much more!," Sony says. Indeed, Sony is selling Overwatch... Read more...
Sony saw a drop in PlayStation 4 console sales during the three-month period ended December 31, the company's third-quarter of fiscal 2017. In a newly released earnings report, Sony indicated it sold 9 million PS4 consoles during the quarter, down 700,000 units from the 9.7 million PS4 consoles it sold in the same quarter a year prior. That said, the PS4 is on pace to surpass cumulative PlayStation 3 console sales this quarter. Back in October, Sony said that lifetime PS4 shipments stood at 67.5 million units. If we add the 9 million more it added during the previous quarter, then the cumulative total stands at 76.5 million, as of December 31 (even higher now that we are into February). By comparison,... Sony ended the year with a bang in regards to its PlayStation 4 console, tacking on 5.9 million unit sales during the holiday season. That strong finish propelled the PS4's lifetime sales total to a whopping 73.6 million units globally. Overall, it was one heck of a month for Sony, which just weeks before had topped 70 million in cumulative PS4 sales, more than doubling Microsoft's Xbox One lifetime shipments. Both game consoles were launched just over four years ago in November 2013 and have seen revisions since then, such as the Xbox One S and Xbox One X for Microsoft, and the PlayStation 4 Slim and PlayStation 4 Pro for Sony. Sony and Microsoft have also pushed their respective online gaming... Read more...
The PS4 is doing very well for Sony even though the standard console is a bit long in the tooth at this point. The console continues to sell robustly and analyst Lewis Ward, a researcher with IDC, says that the console will probably hit 100 million units sold in 2019. That would mean between 2018 and 2019, the console would need to sell another 30 million units. PS4 sales of an additional 30 million sounds quite reasonable. As of early December 2017, the PS4 has moved 70 million units since its global launch in late 2013. The new PS4 Pro is certainly going to be instrumental in helping to push the console to 100 million units. That Pro version is a stopgap measure to give 4K TV owners and... Read more...
For the current generation of game consoles, Sony has no doubt emerged as the overwhelming favorite with gamers across the globe with its PlayStation 4 family. Compared to its prime competition - the Xbox One -- it's not even close. Sony today announced that cumulative sales of the PlayStation 4 have reached 70.6 million. Sony achieved that feat in just four years; the console launched on November 15th, 2013 in the Unites States. Its predecessor, the PlayStation 3, saw sales of around 80 million units during its entire lifespan. More impressive is the fact that Sony added over 10 million sales to its tally since June of 2017. Interestingly, Sony doesn't break down the sales mix of its current... Read more...
The Black Friday ads keep rolling in, giving you plenty of time to formulate a shopping strategy. One of the newest ads to land is from Walmart. The massive retail chain will have discounts on a wide assortment of items, including some nice deals on 4K resolution televisions, and game consoles such as Microsoft's Xbox One S and Sony's PlayStation 4. Sadly, Nintendo's Switch will not be marked down, but it will be in stock, at least initially. If you're after a 4K TV, one of the better deals is a Sharp 55-inch 4K Smart TV (LC-55P6000U) with high dynamic range (HDR) support for just $298. Walmart will also have a Samsung 40-inch 4K TV (40MU6290) with HDR support for $328, along with a handful of... Read more...
This is the time of year when families and friends get together to feast on turkey and fixings, and score deals in technology (and other categories). We are exactly three weeks away from the madness that is known as Black Friday, and retailers have started posting ads outlining upcoming bargains. Two of the newest ads are from Walmart and Costco, both of which will have several deals on Xbox One S and PlayStation 4 systems. Walmart Starting with Walmart, flipping through the flyer we see a PlayStation 4 Slim bundle with a 500GB of storage and Uncharted 4 for $249. It also comes with a $30 gift card. Not too shabby. Walmart will also have several games marked down to $27 each, compared to their... Read more...
The biggest shopping day of the year is nearly upon us. We are of course talking about Black Friday, the annual shopping bonanza where stores lure hordes of eager customers with deep discounts. Surprisingly enough, some of the best deals in tech might be found at Kohl's. A leaked flyer outlining so-called doorbuster deals has found its way to the web, and if you are looking to score an Xbox One S or PlayStation 4 console at a tantalizing price, Kohl's could be your best bet. The leaked ad first appeared on BlackFriday.com but has since been removed. It does not matter, because as we have said a million times before, there are no mulligans when it comes to the web. So, what nifty deals does Kohl's... Read more...
Video game piracy is not exactly rampant on modern consoles, certainly not to the extent that is on PC. However, even though the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have largely been able to avoid piracy from becoming a problem, a whole bunch of ripped PS4 games have found their way to the web, including Grand Theft Auto V and Far Cry 4.The good news for Sony is that unscrupulous gamers who want to grab a cracked game from the web and play it on their PS4 will have to jump through a hoops that will potentially deter a wider range of users. It starts with the PS4 firmware—as described in the NFO (information) files accompanying these games, the release group KOTF (Knights of the Fallen) says the PS4 needs... Read more...
Whether here or abroad, the Nintendo Switch is the hottest selling console around. With regards to the latter, Nintendo has unloaded no less than 1.5 million Switch game systems in its home country of Japan since the console's release in March. To put that into perspective, the Switch is significantly outpacing the PlayStation 4's debut, which took more than twice as long to record 1.5 million sales.Nintendo achieved the feat with its Switch console in just 26 weeks. Its remarkable debut was bolstered by 86,000 console sales for the week ending August 27, which was helped in part by console bundles for Monster Hunter XX and Splatoon 2. That represents and whopping 268 percent week-over-week increase... Read more...

Bungie also confirmed that its servers will go live around the world starting at midnight on September 6, 2017. In anticipation of the launch, PlayStation 4 players who pre-ordered Destiny 2 can start pre-loading the game to their consoles right now. "After launch, there will be a few rituals and firsts that you might want to plan for as you ascend to orbit around the Destiny Endgame. Some of these activities will be ready and waiting as soon as you play your way through to them. Others will go live shortly thereafter,... Read more...
When it comes to cross-platform play, Microsoft is "trying to lead by example," according to Aaron Greenberg, head of marketing for the company's Xbox division. And to Microsoft's credit, it has been able to bring cross-platform play to the Xbox One and Windows PCs. But what about Sony and the PlayStation 4? As stubborn as Sony appears to be on the matter, Greenberg confirmed in an interview with Gamereactor that Microsoft is in talks with Sony on the subject. "We're talking to Sony [about cross-play], we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of that; one community, to unite gamers," Greenberg said."So we're talking to them and we're hopeful that... Nintendo was in need of a win leading up to the launch of its hybrid Switch console, and despite the skepticism that gamers would embrace a comparatively under powered game console to Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One, they have done just that. According to NPD Group, Nintendo was the big winner in July, outselling both the Xbox One and PS4 in the US. Unfortunately NPD Group did not provide exact figures for individual console sales, though seeing the Switch land on top is vindication for Nintendo's decision to go with its gut, something that did not work out so well when designing the Wii U. And though the Switch launched to a limited catalog of games—The Legend of Zelda: Breath... Read more...
