Amazon is cranking out some excellent discounts on its Echo family of hardware and an insanely good deal on Apple's entry-level AirPods. We've rounded the deals up for you here, so let's dig in, shall we? The Echo Show 5 is currently discounted by $30, which takes its price from $84.99 down to $54.99. The Echo Show has a 5.5-inch display with a 960x480 resolution. This is the second-generation model that launched this year, which means that the onboard camera has been upgraded to 2MP (from 1MP), and it includes a physical privacy shutter. Amazon Echo Show 5 Alternatively, you can grab the Echo Show 5 Kids for $64.99, which is discounted by $30. As its name implies, the Kids edition includes parental... Read more...
Prime Day 2021 festivities won't kick off until June 21st, but Amazon is already rolling out many deals on its hardware products. In this case, we're talking about smartphone devices from Amazon smart home brands Ring and Blink. First up is a rather compelling bundle offer on the latest version (2021) of the standard Ring Video Doorbell Wired. The doorbell connects to your router using Wi-Fi and gives you clear, 1080p resolution video from your front door. It also supports two-way audio using the Ring app, allowing you to talk with folks at your front door without even getting up. The Ring Video Doorbell Wired typically costs $59.99, but it's available today for a low $44.99 with free shipping... Read more...
Ring is changing how its users are able to respond to public safety requests. Public agencies will now need to post requests for help publicly through Ring's Neighbors app. The purpose of this change is to provide greater “transparency and accountability.” These requests for assistance will be limited to two posts per incident. The request is viewable by anyone who can view the app’s main feed. Each request must contain information that references an active investigation, including the type of incident (i.e. suspected theft), a reference number for the investigation, current contact information for the public agency requesting the information, relevant date/time range,... It is an awful feeling to have something stolen from your property, like a package left on your doorstep, or to know that a burglar has been rummaging in your home. Fortunately, home security solutions have come a long way. To that end, Ring today announced the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro, which is basically a high-tech floodlight that does much more than illuminate your surroundings. More advanced than ever, Ring's latest security floodlight incorporates some of the same technologies found in its recently released Video Doorbell Pro 2, including 3D motion detection with radar, and a Bird's Eye View feature, which is also powered by radar. "Four years ago, we reinvented the ordinary floodlight with... Read more...
Ring is on a mission to "make neighborhoods safer" by making and selling nifty video surveillance doorbells. Its newest model, the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2, is not only its most advanced and full-featured model to date, it brings together a cornucopia of technologies like 3D motion detection with radar and a Bird's Eye View feature to help ward off package thieves and intruders. The basic premise is the same as always—the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 replaces your regular doorbell, giving you access to a video feed so you can see who exactly is at your front door (or wherever you decide to install it). But just pointing out the video capability is selling the latest model way short. Ring... Read more...
It looks as though Amazon is feeling a bit of pressure when it comes to popular lineup of Video Doorbells produced by its Ring subsidiary. The Ring Video Doorbell, which was last updated in 2020, is priced at $99.99. While that may be cheap for a device from Ring, there are competitors out there that are far cheaper. To get to an even lower price point, Ring today announced the Video Doorbell Wired. This is an all-new device with a slimmer profile, while retaining most of the features of its more expensive siblings. The biggest omission, however, is that this model doesn't have a battery. The lack of a battery accounts for most of the cost savings that you'll find with the Video... Read more...
If people trust their information with businesses tasked with keeping them safe, those companies should at least try to take security seriously. It seems that is not necessarily the case, as a flaw in an app created by Ring was exposing precise location data of customers who posted to the app, when it should have been hiding it. Ring is a smart doorbell and IoT company that created the Neighbors app in 2018, around the same time Amazon completed its acquisition of the company. The Neighbors app was something of a social app where Ring doorbell owners could anonymously share videos that show crime. Think along the lines of a digital neighborhood watch with video footage. Vulnerable Data On Neighbors... Read more...
Back in late November, we brought you news of Amazon Sidewalk, which is a new initiative from the company that allows smart devices that would typically be on the edge of Wi-Fi range limits (or completely out of range) to piggyback off a nearby, internet-connected device. As a result, a neighbor's Echo Dot or Ring Spotlight Cam could provide internet connectivity for the Ring Floodlight Cam that you want to install on the exterior of your backyard shed. What Is Amazon Sidewalk? “Sidewalk-enabled devices connect to Sidewalk Bridges to access the network," Amazon explained at the time. "Customers with a Sidewalk Bridge can contribute a small portion of their internet bandwidth, which... Read more...
Smart home appliances and internet of things (IoT) devices are becoming part of daily life for many. You may even have one of these devices near you right now and it's likely connected to the internet in some way. While the product category may offer some innovative solutions, some products on the market currently fail horribly when it comes to security. UK publication Which? bought 11 different smart doorbells from Amazon and eBay and found that they all failed simple security tests. This means if you have one of these devices, you could be at risk for attacks from nefarious intruders. You would think (and would want) the thing securing your home to be secure over the network, but that just... Read more...
Amazon today announced a slew of new hardware devices within its Ring, Echo, and Fire TV product families. There's a lot to discuss here, so we'll get right to it by starting off with what by far is the most interesting product announced today: the Ring Always Home Cam. Ring Always Home Cam We don't know what to say about this product other than... wow. Should we be stunned in amazement or shake in fear at where security cameras are going? In this case, the Ring Always Home Cam is actually a flying drone that can takeoff from its home base and fly around your home scouting for intruders.  The Always Home Cam integrates with the existing Ring Alarm home security system and... It’s been a while since we’ve seen any deals on Ring products, or Amazon’s Echo family of smart speakers, so it’s quite convenient that we’ve come across a deal this week that combines the two. The primary deal involves the Ring Stick Up Cam, which normally has a retail price of $149.99. However, with today’s deal, Amazon is selling the device for a new low of $84.99. But it doesn’t end there; Amazon is also throwing in a free Echo Dot with your purchase. The Echo Dot carries an MSRP of $49.99, but can typically be had for around $30 on sale, or even as low as $20 during Amazon’s crazy Prime Day festivities. Whatever the case, it’s still an... Back in early March, Ring launched its Video Doorbell 3 and Video Doorbell 3 Plus complete with 5GHz Wi-Fi support, improved motion detection, and Pre-Roll technology (which shows 4 seconds of video prior to an alert being triggered). Today, Ring has unveiled an update to its entry-level Video Doorbell. Like the original, the new Video Doorbell can be run off your existing wired doorbell connection, which makes setup a breeze. Or you can rely on the removable battery pack for power, which will last between 6 months to 12 months per charge depending on the number of alerts you receive per day. It can be easily removed and recharged via an included microUSB cable. With regards to specifications,... Read more...
Amazon fans looking to add a few smart home and other devices to their stable of products may want to take advantage of some special deals the retail giant has just made live. Amazon has a Spring sale going on the Echo Dot third-generation in multiple colors, the Ring Video Doorbell 2, and the Amazon eero mesh Wi-Fi system. For those on a budget during the coronavirus outbreak, Amazon is offering monthly payments on many products as well. And to help with the boredom coefficient, Fire 7 Kids Edition tablets are on sale now as well. The first product is the Amazon Echo Dot third-generation Smart speaker with Alexa built-in. This device is significantly marked down with a sale price of $29.99,... Read more...
Ring Video Doorbell cameras have been in the news recently for security lapses and Amazon's close partnership with law enforcement agencies in the United States. However, the company has been rather silent with respect to releasing new video doorbell models. That changes with the imminent release of the Ring Video Doorbell 3 and Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus, both of which had their product page revealed on Ring's website. While the page was quickly taken down by Ring/Amazon, you can still find the full contents of Ring Video Doorbell 3/3 Plus in Google's web cache. Not that it really matters that much considering that it's just a doorbell, Ring has not really updated the exterior... Read more...
Ring has been in the news a lot lately over lapses in security with its camera products. After thousands of accounts got hacked, Ring took the brunt of the backlash, but explained that user credentials were most likely obtained 1) from unrelated account hijacks and 2) because customers were using the same login credentials across multiple online accounts. Ring made changes to its security regimen and ensured that new customers enabled two-factor authentication to further lockdown accounts. But now, Ring is under fire again with respect to its Android app. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), the Android version of Ring's app is filled with third-party trackers... Ring has faced challenges of late with hackers taking over accounts, among other things. Ring responded earlier this week to questions that five senators had sent to the company in the form of a letter about measures that it is taking to secure its line of video recording devices. The measures the company planned to take weren't good enough for at least one senator. Ring has had several high profile incidents with security, including one where the login credentials of 3,600 Ring Camera owners were leaked. In another incident in December, a hacker took control of a Ring security camera and used it to yell obscenities at an 8-year-old girl in her home. Ring CEO Jamie Siminoff says video of that... Ring Video doorbell users have two ways they can install the doorbell. One has users hardwire the device, and the other relies on battery power. The catch with relying on battery power is if you want to hear the doorbell ring, you need have a Ring Chime Pro that can be plugged into an outlet in a different room. The existing Ring Chime Pro is a smallish device that plugs into an outlet. A new image is going around that claims to be of a refreshed Ring Chime Pro with a completely new design. The image appears to show a device with a more significant speaker inside. Speculation is that the new Ring Chime Pro may have full Alexa integration inside along with a full speaker. That would make it a... Read more...
The log-in credentials for 3,672 Ring camera owners have been leaked this week in a security breach. The leak exposed log-in emails, passwords, time zones, and the names people gave to their Ring cameras. Often those names are specific to where the camera is located, such as "bedroom" and "front door." Using the information that was leaked, an intruder could access the Ring customer's home address, telephone number, and payment information. The payment information included the type of credit card, the last four digits, and the security code. The worst thing about this breach is that it gave the intruders access to live camera footage to all cameras associated with the account. It also gave up... Read more...
Black Friday and Cyber Monday have come and gone, but that doesn't mean that amazing tech deals are dead and buried. In fact, the Ring Video Doorbell 2 is available for a low $129 today, and a rather nice freebie is being thrown in for good measure. The deal comes from a rather unlikely source: Lowe's Home Improvement. The retailer is not only selling the Ring Video Doorbell 2 at the discounted price, but it is throwing in a free Amazon Echo Show 5 as well with the promotion. The Ring Video Doorbell 2 has an MSRP of $199.99, while the Echo Show 5 typically retails for $89.99. Even at its current sale price of $59.99 at Amazon, the Echo Show 5 freebie offer at Lowe's represents a great... Read more...
There are often deals to be had on Ring Video Doorbells, but this latest promotion definitely caught our due to the crazy low price that's attached to it. Amazon is currently selling the Ring Video Doorbell 2 -- which is a certified refurbished device -- for just $99 with free shipping.  The device normally retails for $199, but going the "renewed" route saves you $100. In addition, Amazon is also throwing in a free Ring Chime as well (which itself is a $29 value). The Video Doorbell 2 supports live 1080p video that you can view from anywhere with your smartphone or tablet using the Ring app. The app also allows you to get motion notifications when someone comes within the vicinity... No one likes to have their property stolen, and many people have turned to Amazon's Ring cameras to keep a watchful eye over their homes and hopefully catch criminals in the act. Last month Amazon was looking for a "Managing Editor" to work within Ring to manage a team of news editors who would deliver breaking crime alerts to neighbors using Ring footage and devices. That crime reporting service appears to have been implemented as Ring has started to share videos of people suspected of a crime. Ring has recently used video captured by its doorbell cameras in Facebook advertisements asking users to identify and call the police on a woman suspected of a crime in Mountain View, California.... Amazon is currently the largest e-commerce marketplace and cloud platform in the world. You can purchase everything from groceries to movie downloads through Amazon. The global corporation is now looking to dip their toe in the news industry. A recent job listing revealed that Amazon is looking for a crime news managing editor to work alongside their Ring team. Amazon's “Managing Editor” would work within Ring, a home security company to “manage a team of news editors who deliver breaking crime news alerts to our neighbors”. The Editor is expected to have experience in and a passion for journalism, be a good storyteller, and be able to manage tight timelines. Amazon is... Read more...
