Although it was somewhat of a foregone conclusion that AMD would launch a monstrous 64-core / 128-thread 3rd generation Ryzen Threadripper processor ever since the initial line-up was announced a few months back, the company made it official at CES 2020 last month. AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su took to the stage during a glitzy press conference in Las Vegas, and revealed the Ryzen Threadripper 3990X 64-core HEDT processor we’ll be showing you here today. During Dr. Su’s talk, she disclosed the 3990X’s speeds and feeds and showed the beastly chip taking down a pair of 28-core Xeons worth about 20 thousand dollars, in a 3D rendering benchmark, despite the Threadripper 3990X’s much... AMD really struck a goldmine when it launched its original Zen processor architecture back in 2017. Years before that launch, AMD played second fiddle to Intel in the consumer and enterprise processor markets with regards to performance and market share. However, the Zen microarchitecture proved that AMD was able to compete head-to-head with Intel on the performance front, while using its advantage in process technology to undercut its longtime rival on price. We're now learning that AMD's efforts are continuing to pay off, thanks in part to its Zen 2 architecture that launched in mid-2019. Mercury Research has posted its Q4 2019 CPU market share numbers, and AMD has gained share across... Read more...
Motherboard makers can ill afford to let their foot off the gas pedal, not when there are now chipsets on the horizon. Intel is readying its Z490 chipset for its upcoming Comet Lake-S processors, while AMD is apparently prepping a B550 chipset for its Ryzen 3000 series. Meanwhile, Gigabyte is locked and loaded for both launches. Starting with the Z490 chipset, several Gigabyte-brand models were spotted at the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) website back in September. They included the following models... Z490 Aorus Elite Z490 D Z490 Gaming X Z490 UD Z490 White Z490M Z490M DS3H Z490M Gaming X Since then, there have been several new models listed at the EEC, including a few more that just showed... AMD's Ryzen 4000-based notebooks haven't quite hit store shelves yet, but there are plenty of PCs available right now using older Ryzen 3000 APUs. Such is the case with the Motile M141 Windows 10 laptop that just came across our radar screen today thanks to its crazy-low $200 price tag. First of all, the Motile machine comes with a 14-inch display (Full HD resolution, THX-tuned) which is a plus. Powering the system is a Ryzen 3 3200U APU, which is a 2-core/4-thread processor. It features a base clock of 2.6GHz and a boost clock of 3.5GHz. Also along for the ride is an integrated Radeon Vega 3 GPU, all operating within a TDP of 15 watts. Given its budget pricing, the system comes standard with... Read more...
AMD hasn't been in this good of a position in years, and it has its Zen processor architecture mostly to thank for it. First introduced in 2017 with the first-generation Ryzen 1000 family, the Zen family has expanded to cover consumer desktop, HEDT, mobile, and data center platforms. AMD's newest generation of processors, which were introduced mid-year, are using the company's 7nm Zen 2 architecture. Those new Zen 2 processors -- Ryzen 3000 on the desktop, EPYC 7002 for enterprise -- are providing strong competition for Intel, and as a result, has helped AMD to gain market share and clout with customers. As of today, AMD stock is hovering at an all-time high of over $46 in intraday trading. Over... Read more...
AMD is not saying much about its next-generation APUs (accelerated processing units), or Ryzen processors with Vega graphics, as the company prefers to call them. However, the latest AMD Bootcamp drivers for December 2019 seemingly contain some clues as what will comprise the upcoming chips, when they finally arrive. Otherwise known as Renoir, AMD's next-generation APUs will feature CPU cores based on its Zen 2 architecture, the same as found in its newest desktop Ryzen and enthusiast Threadripper parts. What has not been set in stone, however, is the graphics architecture. It has been widely assumed AMD will stick with Vega for another round, and the data mine into the Bootcamp drivers reinforce... AMD has been on a tear lately, with its third-generation Ryzen processors knocking it out of the park. We know this is not the end of the line for AMD's Zen CPU architecture, though, as there are at least two more generations to come—Zen 3 and Zen 4. So, what will future CPUs bring to the table? For one thing, even more cores. Multi-core computing has been around for many years now. However, AMD's Ryzen CPUs have really kicked things into high gear, in terms of core and thread counts. To wit, the Ryzen 9 3950X, which is technical a mainstream desktop chip, sports a whopping 16 cores and 32 threads to hammer multi-threaded workloads. AMD essentially made having more cores and threads affordable,... Read more...

AMD has had a resurgence in the consumer (and server) market with its Zen-based processors over the past few years. Kicking off with first-generation Ryzen/Ryzen Threadripper processors (Zen) in 2017, AMD followed up with their second-generation Zen+ based counterparts in 2018. During the summer, AMD launched the Zen 2 based Ryzen 3000 family and on Monday we witnessed the arrival of the Threadripper 3960X/3970X. Just as we've seen with monthly rundowns from German retailer Mindfactory, Amazon is also showing that AMD processors are running the table when it comes to sales. First spotted by the folks at WCCFTech, AMD has taken over 8 of the top 10 spots when it comes... Read more...

AMD has been on an impressive run since the release of its first-generation Ryzen processors a couple of years back. After a long stretch playing second-fiddle to Intel in the desktop processor space, unable to effectively compete at the high-end of the market, AMD’s Zen micro-architecture propelled the company into a much more competitive position. And follow-on products turned the heat up on Intel even further. Today, that heat becomes a blazing hot inferno as AMD completely reshapes the HEDT landscape with a pair of processors as impressive as we’ve ever seen. At the risk of spoiling the rest of this review, AMD not only overtakes Intel in the HEDT market with this release... Read more...

When Dr. Lisu Su took to the stage at an event back in June and officially announced the Ryzen 9 3950X, it didn’t come as much of a surprise to be honest. Considering the fact that Zen 2 CPU chiplets feature 8-cores each, and the Ryzen 9 3900X with dual CPU chiplets launched with only 12-cores enabled, there was immediate speculation that a 16-core Ryzen 3000 series variant was in the works and that AMD was perhaps holding it back for strategic reasons. Of course, there were a multitude of leaks leading up to the announcement that continued to fuel the flames, but needless to say a 16-core CPU like the Ryzen 9 3950X seemed to be inevitable. AMD didn’t hit the initial September release... Read more...
AMD's Ryzen 3000 family of Zen 2 processors is burning up the sales charts due to their value pricing and multi-threaded benchmark prowess. But now that the Ryzen 3000 processors have had a few months to "spread their wings" so to speak, some rather deep discounts can be found on the previous generation Ryzen 2000 processors. In today's deal in particular, we have the Ryzen 7 2700X which previously served as the flagship for AMD's mainstream desktop family. Micro Center is selling the processor right now for $159.99, which represents a 50 percent discount from its original list price. This is nearly a $40 discount from the previous low price that we've detailed on this... Read more...
AMD continues to lead the charge in processor sales at Mindfactory, one of the biggest computer hardware retailers in Germany, by outpacing Intel for yet another month. Helping to achieve that feat, AMD processor sales hit a record high in September at the German retailer, since the launch of the first-gen Ryzen family. Granted, Mindfactory is but a single retailer, so the sales trends witnessed there do not necessarily translate across the board. However, as one of the largest computer hardware retailers in Germany, the data is relevant. It's also encouraging for AMD, which is finds itself competing with Intel from the top to the bottom of its product stack. AMD And Intel CPU Sales And Revenue... Read more...
Microsoft held its yearly Surface event today in New York City, and the company is living up to the hype that has been building leaving up to the big unveil. There have been plenty of rumors swirling around the devices, and those reports have largely turned out to be accurate as we're staring at the Surface Laptop 3. The Surface Laptop 3 is available in two screen sizes: 13-inches and 15-inches (as previously reported). This is the first time that the larger 15-inch form-factor has been available for the Surface Laptop product line, and gives users who want a bit more screen real estate a new alternative.  Under the hood, it has been confirmed that the 13-inch model is using quad-core... While AMD has been garnering a lot of attention in the mainstream processor market with third-generation desktop Ryzen processors, and is building anticipation for third-generation Ryzen Threadripper parts, the company has been relatively silent with regards to the professional market. That changes today with the announcement of a new line of Ryzen 3000 Pro processors aimed squarely at business customers. Like the already announced Ryzen 3000 desktop processors, the Ryzen 3000 Pro family is based on AMD's 7nm Zen 2 architecture. At this time, there are three new Zen 2 processors that have been announced: Ryzen 5 Pro 3600, Ryzen 7 Pro 3700, and Ryzen 9 Pro 3900. All three processors have... Read more...
We recently had the chance to spend some time with the folks at Maingear HQ and built a beautiful, water-cooled AMD Rzyen 3000-based rig. That system was destined for Dave’s lab and has become his daily workhorse – in fact, that rig produced the video you’ll see below. Not long after we took that trip to Maingear though, my personal rig started acting up. I have been rocking an Ivy Bridge-based system for about 7 years now that has made it through multiple OS upgrades and served me quite well. I had been planning to build a new rig for many months, but my current rig had been so reliable, and my personal and professional workloads so intense, I just couldn’t pull the trigger.... AMD's third-generation Ryzen Threadripper (Zen 2) processors should be here by the end of the year, which means that there are some deals to be had on current and previous generation Threadripper processors. One deal in particular that caught our eyes is on the Ryzen Threadripper 1920X, which is the 12-core version of the first-generation Threadripper. When the Ryzen Threadripper 1920X launched back during the summer of 2017, it was priced at $799. These days, the processor has a MSRP of $399, but Amazon is currently selling the processor (via a third-party seller) for just $199, representing a 50 percent discount. That's a lot of bang for your buck if you are looking to build... Read more...
