Though we are still quite some time from the launch of any new flagship Galaxy smartphone, some leaks have sprung from the Samsung well. Earlier this week, we heard about the new Galaxy S22 Ultra and how it may take over the role of the Galaxy Note line. Now, we have some renders of this alleged new device, and it looks rather interesting. Akin to some previous Galaxy devices, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is slated to have plenty of storage and the latest Qualcomm processor, potentially the Snapdragon 898, which has been the subject of many rumors. Further, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is expected to feature a 6.8-inch curved AMOLED display, likely with a 120Hz refresh rate. With a screen that size, the... Read more...
Samsung just launched its Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic last month, but there is already a pretty hefty discount available on the former. The Galaxy Watch 4 is available in 40mm and 44mm sizes, but the smaller size sees the biggest discount (percentage-wise) today at Amazon. The Galaxy Watch 4 (40mm) has an MSRP of $249.99, but Amazon is currently selling the smartwatch for $229.99. That's a $20 discount, which is already excellent for a brand-new device. However, Amazon is also throwing in a free Samsung Wireless Charger Fast Charge Pad DUO. That device alone has a retail price of $59.99, so that makes the $229.99 combo offer (a total of 25 percent off) even hotter. The Wireless... Read more...
The Galaxy Note has been a popular smartphone line, offering users a Galaxy experience in an enlarged handset with S-Pen support. And save for the Galaxy Note 7, which was given a Viking funeral because of exploding batteries, they've been solid products. The Galaxy Note series may also cease to exist going forward, at least as you've come to know it (by name). Rumor has it Samsung will not launch another Galaxy Note handset, and instead will task its upcoming Galaxy S22 Ultra with filling that role. Galaxy Note fans pining for an updated model might be happy with that decision, if it comes to be, though there is at least some reason to maintain a bit of optimism—the S-Pen. The rumor comes... If there’s one thing that companies across various industries are asking for right now, it’s increased chip capacity so that they can ship more products out the door to customers. But, unfortunately, there’s a severe backlog when it comes to fab capacity. That means the current chip supply can’t keep up with demand for hardware like Radeon RX and GeForce RTX GPUs. And even automotive companies like Ford are forced to leave unfinished F-150 pickups sitting unfinished in lots due to a lack of chips (typically produced on older, mature process nodes) to power critical vehicle functions. The good news is that that IDC projects that the semiconductor marker could grow by just... Read more...
As we approach the closing quarter of 2021, numerous leaks concerning Samsung's future flagship devices are spilling out. On the smartphone side, we have the Galaxy S22. And for tablets, Samsung will soon introduce the Galaxy Tab S8 family. Galaxy S22 Family Rumors Galore Starting with the Galaxy S22, we already know that at least the international version of the smartphone will feature Samsung's Exynos 2200 SoC. We covered this SoC earlier this week, which features a single 2.9GHz Cortex-X2 prime core joined by three 2.8GHz high-performance cores and four 2.2GHz efficiency cores. In addition, it will also contain an AMD RDNA 2-based GPU clocked at 1.25GHz. Other features that are now rumored... Read more...
Earlier this year, Samsung Display gave us a status update on its efforts to develop high refresh rate OLED panels for the laptop market. Up until this point, OLED panels for notebooks have been stuck at 60Hz, while LCD panels have hit 144Hz, 240Hz, and beyond. This week, the South Korean electronics giant confirmed that its 90Hz laptop panels entered mass production for smoother on-screen action. Despite the perceived refresh rate deficit compared to a 120Hz LCD panel, Samsung Display says that the OLED panel will produce more natural-looking images, while blur length in videos is improved by 10 percent. In addition, the response time for the 90Hz panel is 10x faster than its 120Hz LCD counterparts,... Read more...
Earlier today, we brought you some sweet discounts on Samsung’s brand new Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. This afternoon, deals abound on much older hardware, but they represent excellent values for those currently in the market. Kicking things off is the OnePlus 8T. When we last visited the phone in early June, it was already available at a discounted price of $549 direct from OnePlus. Today, the phone is discounted even further at OnePlus, falling to just $499 with free shipping. OnePlus 8T 12GB/256GB Unlocked $499 @ OnePlus That price gets you a powerful smartphone powered by a Snapdragon 865 SoC paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Samsung has been refining its innovative foldable phone line-up for a couple of years now. While the first iteration of the company's Galaxy Z Fold may not have been terribly robust out in the wild, last year's follow up was by most accounts a solid device. This year, the newest Galaxy Z Fold3 5G seems to have it all: a malleable 7.6" screen, more durable construction, Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 5G Mobile Platform, and enough memory and storage to keep the Galaxy Z Fold3 viable for a long time to come.  There are many questions we wanted to answer with this device. What's it like to carry around? Does the foldable nature of the main display feel strange under our fingertips? What... Read more...
Samsung recently launched its third-generation foldable smartphones – the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 -- and they’re very impressive. The cheapest of the two is the Galaxy Z Flip 3, priced from $999 compared to the $1,449 launch price of its predecessor. Even though the smartphone has only been on the market for a few weeks, Amazon is already discounting the Galaxy Z Flip 3 by a fair amount. Amazon’s discount comes in at $75, which takes the smartphone down to just $924.99 with free shipping. The discounted pricing is available for Phantom Black, Lavender, Cream, and Green colors. Samsung is prepping a powerhouse mobile SoC with the Exynos 2200, which will reportedly officially ship later this year. Earlier this week, some early benchmarks for the Exynos 2200 found their way onto the internet with an octa-core design headlined by an Arm Cortex-X2 "prime" core. We were warned at the time that clocks for the cores on the Exynos 2200 weren't final and that speeds (and performance) would improve with production silicon. Now, mobile leaker Ice Universe claims to have the final clock speeds for the SoC, with the prime Cortex-X2 core coming in at 2.9GHz (up from 2.59GHz on earlier silicon). The Cortex-X2 is joined by three high-performance cores clocked at up to 2.8GHz. Finally,... Read more...
Android 12 has been available in developer preview and public beta form for months, but Samsung is just now getting around to bringing its customers into the fold. Tonight, Samsung announced that users with a Galaxy S21 device (Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra) are eligible to join the One UI 4 beta program, which is, of course, based on Android 12. In addition to all the new functionality along with performance and security updates coming with Android 12, Samsung also touts these One UI 4-specific improvements that beta testers will be able to leverage: A wealth of theme options let you adjust the look and functionality of your device, giving you tools to configure your home screen,... Samsung is working on a version of its Exynos system-on-chip (SoC) that will incorporate AMD's second generation Radeon DNA (RDNA 2) graphics, which is certainly exciting from both technical and consumer standpoints. Rumor has it the upcoming chip will power Samsung's Galaxy S22 phones. As we wait to find out, an interesting Geekbench listing has popped up, perhaps giving us an early glimpse of the chip's performance. As always, it is important to take benchmark leaks in stride and not necessarily treat them as fact. These things can be manipulated, and on top of that, it is impossible know all the variables at play, like how early the represented silicon might be, what the testing conditions... Read more...
Two years ago, Samsung ushered the era of folding phones with the daring (but ultimately flawed) Galaxy Fold. In 2020, the company followed suit with three much improved foldables -- the stylish Galaxy Z Flip, Z Flip 5G, and the powerful Galaxy Z Fold2. With most of the kinks worked out (pun intended), these excellent handsets were finally worth recommending, though cost and durability were still obstacles for many. But things are different today. Samsung’s new water-resistant $1800 GalaxyZ Fold3 and $1000 Galaxy Z Flip3 are more affordable and life-proof than ever. While the Fold series transform from a phone into a small tablet, the Flip models are basically standard handsets that... Read more...
All of the world's leading chip manufacturers are working overtime to satisfy the demand for their customers, but it isn't enough. Hard-hit sectors include mature chips used in automobiles and advanced GPUs that power modern AMD Radeon RX 6000 and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards (among others). Samsung is one of many chip giants looking to expand its fab capacity, and it is eying locations within the United States. The South Korean company already has a fab located within Texas, so naturally, officials in that state are looking to strike gold again with Samsung's proposed $17 billion chip factory. Taylor, Texas, hopes to be in the running as a potential site and is offering significant tax... Read more...
The perfect laptop may not exist, in large part because determining what qualifies as a flawless notebook is partially subjective. Some models come delightfully close, however, and Samsung's Galaxy Book Pro 360 is one of them. It's a splendidly thin and lightweight system, and powerful enough to handle a variety of tasks, even some gaming (though it's not a gaming laptop). Samsung could have stopped there and it would have had a winning combination on its hands, but one of the best features of the Galaxy Pro 360 is its exceptional all-day (and then some) battery life. This is not an Arm-based system, either, but a premium designed laptop built around an 11th Gen Core i7-1165G7 processor,... Read more...
We had a lot of good things to say about the camera performance on the Galaxy S21 5G, which packs a 64-megapixel shooter among its array of lenses. The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G goes even further with a monstrous 108-megapixel sensor on the rear, but even if you add them both together, Samsung's new ISOCELL HP1 offers up even more pixels—as in, a whopping 200 megapixels. Photographers will be quick to point out that megapixel-count is just one component, and that taking great photos lies beyond the specifications. That's true, but specs aren't meaningless, either. The higher the pixel count, the more detail can be captured, which can especially be helpful when zooming into shots on your camera... Read more...
As if we didn't have enough mounting evidence over the weekend regarding the imminent arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Fan Edition (FE), two new bits of information have come across our news desk this morning. The first leak comes via the official Galaxy S21 FE user manual, which is the most concrete information that we have to-date confirming the device's existence. The manual was obtained by SamMobile and is readily available for viewing here [PDF]. The manual confirms many previously leaked information about the Galaxy S21 FE, including IP68 dust/water resistance, support for reverse wireless charging, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and Dolby Atmos support. The manual also shows that the... Read more...
Samsung has already laid out plans to expand its folding devices lineup, and the company recently made a strong impression with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 (which have so far received favorable reviews). However, a new leak now suggests that Samsung's folding aspirations are about to get larger, much larger. While there's not much else behind the leak, popular gadget leaker Ice Universe tweeted a single banner: Galaxy Book Fold 17. There was no mention of availability, specs, or even a hint of pricing, but the development of such a device should not surprise anyone. Earlier in 2021, Samsung showed off numerous concepts of smartphones and laptops using folding or rollable displays... Read more...
Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event occurred earlier this month with nary a mention of the rumored Galaxy S21 Fan Edition (FE). However, the smartphone has been talked up for months, and we've seen plenty of renders and even official marketing materials for the smartphone. A new leak from Max Weinbach claims that the Galaxy S21 FE could be right around the corner. Weinbach posted an image of what looks to be a retail store display for Samsung smartphones. You would see this kiosk in the smartphone section of, say, an AT&T/Verizon store or inside a Best Buy. The exhibit features Galaxy S21 5G and S21 FE 5G branding, which is a key clue that a release is imminent. If that wasn't enough, the Samsung... Read more...
Passengers on an Alaska Airlines flight had to be evacuated after landing at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport because someone's smartphone caught on fire before the plane reached its gate. Crew members acted quickly, retrieving fire extinguishers and putting out the fire. Fortunately, it does not appear as though anyone was seriously hurt, just some "minor scrapes and bruises," according to airline officials. What caused the smartphone, believed to be a Samsung Galaxy A21, to ignite is not known. This sort of thing is usually traced to the lithium ion battery pack, which are known to overheat and catch fire if they have been damaged or there is a defect in manufacturing. Whether the device... Do you think maybe the tech industry is hyper-focused on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies? It certainly is, and to some extent AI is practically everywhere these days, from servers and high-performance computing, to autonomous vehicles and everyday consumer devices, and everything in, around, and between. So it's not really shocking that Samsung is touting its latest advancements in processing-in-memory (PIM) technology at the Hot Chips 33 conference. Some of what Samsung is discussing has to do with past announcements. For example, back in February Samsung introduced the industry's first high bandwidth memory PIM, Aqualbolt-XL, with AI processing built into its HBM2 Aquabolt to bolster... Read more...
It looks as though Samsung has a hit on its hands with its latest folding Android smartphones: the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3. As their names imply, these are third-generation folding phones. Hence they bring a bevy of functionality and usability benefits over their predecessors. Most importantly, pricing is trending down for the smartphones. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is $200 cheaper than its predecessor (now starting at $1,799), while the Galaxy Z Flip 3 has dropped a staggering $450 to just $999. According to The Korea Herald, home market preorders for the two smartphones combined reached 450,000 units as of Sunday. However, according to industry sources, that figure could top 800,000...
