The smartphone maker says that it has had a team of people working on 5G since 2016 and during the launch event for this new device, it provided a live demo with a 5G phone call using a network provided by Orange Spain. It seems like Samsung and Apple just aren't getting the memo from consumers that people aren't happy with the pricing of their flagship devices; prices are pushing into the well over $1000 zone. Apple has seen its iPhone upgrade cycle lengthen to four years with much of the reason placed on the high price of the smartphones. Samsung is facing the same challenge as its prices go ever higher with each new generation. A new report from research firm Gartner says that Huawei is gaining ground on them in part because the pricing of iPhone and Galaxy devices is so high. Smartphone makers from China, like Xiaomi, are going more affordable; Xiaomi unveiled a new flagship device called the Mi 9 that bested... Read more...
As older devices age, many smartphone shoppers are simply forgoing the big boys like Apple and Samsung and going for much cheaper alternative flagship devices from reasonably priced makers like Xiaomi. Xiaomi has rolled out a new flagship device that is impressive on paper and very affordable. The new device is called the Xiaomi Mi 9, and it has officially debuted packing a Snapdragon 855 under the hood and a 48MP rear camera with a price that is up to a third less than what you would pay for some flagship Galaxy or iPhone devices. Xiaomi is offering the Mi 9 starting at $445, and for that price you get a base Mi 9 packing 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Xiaomi offers an upgraded version... Read more...
The era of crazy expensive smartphones is certainly upon us; iPhone models from last year along with Galaxy devices showed that smartphone makers believe consumers will spend over $1,000 on a new device. A new price leak out of China has surfaced that shows the price for the high-end Galaxy S10+ smartphone listed at 10,000 yuan, which is about $1,500. Previous pricing leaks have hinted that the device will sell for right around that same price in multiple parts of the world. Perhaps just as troubling for fans of the Galaxy S10+ is that the model right below that 12GB of RAM and 1TB of storage top-of-the-line model packing 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage won't be much cheaper at 9,000 yuan,... MWC 2019 will be here before you know it and at the show, there will be a legion of new smartphones unveiled. Among the devices to be revealed is the LG V50 ThinQ. LG has already been teasing the device, so we know a bit about it, and now an image has leaked that claims to be of the smartphone wearing its Sprint 5G livery. A glance at the device shows that it looks very familiar. Image via Evan Blass Essentially the LG V50 ThinQ looks exactly like the V40 ThinQ that came before it, but the V50 has a yellow 5G logo on the back for Sprint duty. The back of the alleged V50 ThinQ shows the same three camera arrangement with fingerprint scanner underneath. The image of the front of the V50 has the... Read more...

Huawei released its Mate 20 series of smartphones late last year, consisting of the Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20, and Mate 20 Lite. The Lite and Pro versions are the base and flagship models, respectively, while the Mate 20 we're looking at here today is the middle child. When comparing the Mate 20 to the Mate 20 Pro you can see Huawei has omitted some of the high-end features, such as an in-screen finger print reader and OLED display. However, you still get a large 6.53" IPS display with a 88% screen to bezel ratio (thanks to its small teardrop top notch) a large 4000mAH battery, and a camera that's nearly as good as the one in the Mate 20 Pro. So, if you can live without all the bells-and-whistles,... Read more...
LG is gearing up for a big MWC 2019 showing and is already teasing its flagship device that will be unveiled at the show. LG has in the past teased a device using a Snapdragon 855 SoC and packing a 5G modem for the show, but it's unclear if that device is the G8 ThinQ. LG has now announced that it has teamed up with Infineon and that the LG G8 ThinQ to be unveiled at the show will pack the new Infineon REAL3 Time-of-Flight (ToF) image sensor chip. LG says that the new sensor is going to play a critical role in the front-facing camera of the G8 ThinQ smartphone. The sensor builds on the combined skills of Infineon and pmdtechnolgoies in algorithms for processed 3D point clouds. A point cloud is... Read more...
Earlier this week we talked a bit about the Indian smartphone market where Apple and Samsung found stiff competition from OnePlus. OnePlus led the premium smartphone market overall for Q4 2018 in India, yet it didn't even turn up in the global figures. The numbers from market research firm Canalys are now out for the overall global smartphone market during 2018. Samsung was again at the top of the list for the entire year despite a 7.2% decline in sales. Canalys data shows that Samsung shipped 293.7 million handsets to own 21.2% of the global device market. That is a decline compared to the 2017 full-year numbers when Samsung shipped 316.6 million smartphones. The data seems to indicate... Read more...
Many smartphone enthusiasts are waiting in anticipation for the launch of Samsung's new Galaxy S10 smartphone family. The S10 smartphones will launch at a Samsung Unpacked event on February 20. Now sources close to the company claim that mass production of the S10 started simultaneously around the globe on January 25. The source also claimed that the Galaxy S10 models currently in production would run on 4G networks, not 5G networks as some had hoped. The source claims that the S10 running on 5G networks is in the works and will be produced later in the first half of the year. The S10 will have multiple cameras and all will have in-display fingerprint reader technology. They won't all have... Read more...
A new patent uncovered by LetsGoDigital has given us our first look at an experimental smartphone designed by Intel that will have a folding display. This design, which will likely be followed by many similar designs from other major developers in the mobile world, essentially gives you the advantage of having an all in one device that is both a phone and a tablet. Intel's tri-fold phone design picks up where the company's dual-display phone projects left off. In its most compact mode, the smartphone will look just like that: a smartphone. Opening the phone up to reveal the second display extends the device's function in several ways. The second display can be used as a dedicated on-screen... Read more...

Things aren't looking great for the smartphone market overall in 2019. J.P. Morgan is predicting that the biggest impact in the sagging smartphone realm will be felt by high-end device makers like Apple and Samsung. A note from J.P. Morgan to investors predicts that iPhone units will decline year-over-year in 2019 due to extended replacement cycles and lackluster demand in China. Analysts at the firm predict that overall smartphone industry sales will shrink between 4.8% and 5.5% in 2019. That is significantly larger than the 2.9 to 3.3% loss the industry saw in 2018. Recovery is predicted to come in 2020 when 5G devices will become widely available, and consumers are expected to upgrade heavily... Read more...
As smartphone fans wait in anticipation for Samsung to roll out its folding screen Galaxy F, LG is cooking up something a bit different that will still give smartphone users more screen space. A rumor is going around that LG is set to launch a new smartphone that has an option to have a second screen attachment. The rumor comes from a person who claims to be familiar with LG's plans. The source describes the second screen attachment as a sort of case with a screen that could double the size of the smartphone's display. The name of the device hasn't been finalized according to the source, but it will be decided soon as the source says that it is one of the multiple devices that LG is launching... Read more...
An Oppo invite is making the rounds that wants people to tune in on January 16. We won't know precisely what the event is about until tomorrow, but rumors point to technology that is an evolution of tech that Oppo showed off back in 2017 at MWC. That tech was for a slick 5x optical zoom system that uses a prism. That fancy prism was able to bend the light 90-degrees allowing the lens for the zoom function to be horizontal across the device to overcome the packing constraints of thin smartphone designs. As cool as that zoom tech was, Oppo never put it into a commercially available smartphone. That may be changing with rumors pointing to a refined version of that tech making its debut at tomorrow's... Read more...
Samsung Pay has been a mainstay for Galaxy smartphone users in the U.S. market, as the digital payment service first launched back in 2015. However, a new problem has now surfaced for some Android users that has to do with actual the Samsung Pay framework. Samsung Pay framework is an app that is bundled on Samsung phones that is designed to provide some of the functionality for Samsung Pay. Usually, that app works quietly in the background drawing no attention to itself, but of late the framework has a big issue for some users. For some, the app is causing significant battery drain. Reports of the battery drain issue have turned up on Reddit with some users claiming that battery usage... Read more...
When Apple unveiled its first iPhone X in 2017, iPhone (and Android) fans around the world let out a collective gasp as they witnessed the next stage of smartphone design: the infamous "notch." From the get-go, notched designs seemed forced, especially when countless Android manufacturers jumped on the bandwagon seemingly instantaneously, as if major display manufacturers were behind the design trend. Today, Android smartphone vendors seem to have improved their notch smarts, with OnePlus being one of the best examples of how to make a good notch that doesn't stand out. On the OnePlus 6, the notched OP generation began with a modest footprint (and respectable "notch control"), while the OnePlus... Read more...
The fact that folding smartphones are coming isn't debatable at this point. Samsung has already shown off its folding smartphone packing a 7.3-inch Infinity Flex display that folds in half offering a more pocketable form factor. But Samsung isn't alone in working to get folding screen devices on the market; Huawei has been tipped to debut a folding smartphone at MWC 2019. A new leaked video claims to show a folding smartphone that Xiaomi is working on. The video comes from Evan Blass via Twitter who notes that the authenticity of the footage is unverified. Blass says that the person who supplied the video claims the device is made by Xiaomi, but there is no official branding seen in the... Read more...
There's no shortage of places to run into spam. It seems like nowadays, all you need to do is open a new email account, and there will already be spam in there waiting for you. Alright, that may be a slight exaggeration, but the problem was bad a decade or even twenty years ago, and it hasn't slowed down. Many companies push out spam protection for this very reason, but its effectiveness is largely hit-or-miss. Google is likely one of the top guardians against spam out there, but even Gmail is prone to filtering out legitimate messages (which is why you should make it a habit to check your spam folder periodically). The lowly SMS chat isn't even safe. It's actually almost too easy to send an... Read more...
Andy Rubin and crew expected big things when they started Essential and created a smartphone that aimed to be different from other devices on the market, but things didn't go their way. Consumers didn't flock to the new company the father of Android created, and sales for the phone were poor. In May of this year, Essential announced that it had canceled its second-generation phone and was considering a sale. Fast forward a few months and Essential had announced layoffs, despite having delivered the headphone accessory that it had promised for its smartphone. Today, Essential has now announced that it isn't making the Essential Phone anymore but there's perhaps still hope. The upside for fans... Read more...
Motorola's G7 smartphone is going to launch soon, and there have already been leaks that hint at what we can expect from the smartphone. The first leak was via the FCC, and then heard that the Moto G7 Power variant would have a gigantic 5,000 mAh internal battery. Today, renders of the entire Moto G7 line have turned up online giving us a look at the style we can expect from the smartphones. All of the models look very similar, but have notches with varying widths and shapes. The line includes the Moto G7, G7 Plus, G7 Power, and G7 Play. The renders show that the G7 and G7 Plus have a small notch that looks like a waterdrop. The other two devices have a longer and more traditionally shaped... Read more...
