Microsoft is seemingly in a race to get the Surface Duo out the door before Samsung announces its equally intriguing Galaxy Fold 2. Now we're seeing even more evidence that the launch is imminent. Surface Duo assets have already shown up in Microsoft's Your Phone app according to Zac Bowden. The fact that Microsoft would put this unreleased phone in its production app shows that the wait won't be much longer. Remember the Surface Duo? It was an interesting, folding dual-screen Android smartphone that Microsoft first showed off in October 2019. However, it's been a long 8 months since that unveil and it still hasn't been released. According to a tweet this week by Windows Central's Zac Bowden, Microsoft is pushing to get the Surface Duo out the door before Samsung launches its Galaxy Fold 2. That's probably a wise move, as the Surface Duo had pretty competitive specs when it was first announced, but it's falling behind the times as a "flagship" device for 2020. The Surface Duo reportedly features two 5.6-inch AMOLED displays that each have a resolution of 1800x1350.... Read more...
The cogs are turning behind the scenes at Microsoft as the company continues development on its Surface Duo dual-screen Android device. Microsoft is working to give developers the tools they need to ensure websites and other software will function optimally in a dual-screen form factor. Microsoft has begun rolling out support for the Surface Duo emulator to the stable version of the Edge browser. Previously, the Duo emulator could be enabled on the Canary, Dev, and Beta branches for Edge and Chrome. The roadmap shows the emulator is supposed to be completed in July 2020, but it can be enabled now in the previously mentioned branches. Microsoft's developer tools page reportedly shows there will... Read more...
Things have been relatively quiet on the Surface Duo front since the smartphone was first unveiled back in October 2019. Since that time, Microsoft has been relatively mum about the Surface Duo, and enthusiasts are eager to see the device out in the wild. Luckily, the folks over at Windows Central claim to have all of the latest specifications for the Surface Duo, and they're right in line with what we've been hearing since the device was announced. According to the publication, the smartphone will come standard with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC, 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage. However, considering that 64GB is a bit on the skimpy side these days, there will also be a 256GB... Read more...
Lots of smartphone and tablet users have been excited at the prospect of the Microsoft Surface Duo that skirts the line between the two devices with a fold-out screen and the ability to make calls and have a larger screen for work or play. Holiday 2020 is when we thought the device would land, but rumors continue to persist that the Surface Duo Android phone might be ready sooner than we think. Sources who claim to know what Microsoft is cooking up say the hardware and software for the Surface Duo are essentially done. Microsoft is reportedly working on finalizing the top-level OS customization and in-box app experiences that are specific to Surface Duo. That the software and hardware are complete... Read more...
It will still be several more months before Microsoft launches its Surface Duo, a new dual-screen device that you can slip in your pocket. The Surface Duo is essentially an Android phone developed with the cooperation of Google on the software side. We don't have a ton of details yet, though a leaked video points to an interesting "Peek" feature. Twitter user WalkingCat posted the video, which shows the Surface Duo partially unfolding to give users a peek at any Android notifications that might exist. The notifications appear on the right-side of the Surface Duo, and users can swipe to interact with them. It looks as though they can be deleted as well, without opening the Surface Duo completely.... Read more...
Microsoft doesn't have a good track record in the smartphone realm, with its failed Windows Phone platform and hardware that didn't get people excited as an alternative to Android and iOS. Microsoft eventually threw in the towel and ended development of its Windows Phone OS, but it's certainly not done in the pocketable mobile device market yet. The company is at work on a new Android tablet-smartphone hybrid of sorts called the Surface Duo, and a lot of people are excited about the device. It has now turned up on video out in the wild, and the forthcoming foldable looks very compelling. The video shows the smartphone in use by a man who appears to be sitting on public transit. The actual video... Read more...
For many people, the folding smartphones that are out there with seamless screens -- like the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X -- aren't super appealing. They cost a lot of money and have questionable durability. For those who want more screen real estate in a smaller package, something like the Surface Duo and other devices out there with two separate screens in one device might be the ticket. Recently a photo of what appears to be a Surface Duo was snapped in the wild. The device is presumably being used by a Microsoft worker who is testing the device ahead of launch. It shows the two separate screens that fold out into a decently sized tablet when needed. One thing of note in the image,... Read more...
Microsoft has unveiled an SDK that is for dual-screen devices, like the upcoming Surface Duo. The SDK is meant to allow devs to start getting their apps and software ready for the dual-screen devices that will be launching down the road. While the SDK for the Microsoft Surface Duo is available now, the preview SDK for Windows 10X will launch "in the coming weeks." Microsoft has also announced new web standards proposals that will enable dual-screen experiences for websites and PWAs on Android and Windows 10X. The new standards that the software giant is proposing will provide developers with the capabilities and tools needed to develop for dual-screen devices. The preview SDK for the Surface... Yesterday, Microsoft unloaded a bevy of updates to its Surface family including the refreshed Surface Pro 7, the Surface Laptop 3 (with a new 15-inch variant), and the all-new Surface Pro X. The company also gave us a glimpse at two products that will launch in 2020: the Surface Neo and the Surface Duo. We were able to get hands on the former three products and have some images that we'd like to share of them all below. At the same time, we'll give you a quick overview of what each has to offer. Surface Pro 7 This is largely a minor refresh to the Surface Pro 6 that launched last year. It features the same chassis design as its predecessor, with the exception of a USB-C port that has been added... Read more...
At today's Surface event, we were all expecting for Microsoft to announce the Surface Laptop 3, Surface Pro 7, Surface Pro X and perhaps get a glimpse at its dual screen tablet (now officially called the Surface Neo). What we weren't expecting, however, was a "one more thing" announcement of the Surface Duo. Surface Duo is a new Android-based smartphone that was developed with the cooperation of Google on the software side. The device doesn't appear to be running any recognizable flavor of Android, and is likely using Microsoft's own take on the world's most popular operating system. The device itself looks like a shrunken down version of the Surface Neo thanks to its... Read more...
