It’s a ThinkPad. No, it’s a Yoga! No, it’s...a ThinkPad Yoga. Lenovo has melded two of its popular laptop design approaches together to create a sort of hybrid ultrabook, bringing together elements of its workhorse ThinkPad lineup and multi-mode capable Yoga notebooks. It has the work-friendly keyboard design of the new generation of Lenovo ThinkPads, yet it also has that innovative hinge flexibility and multimode configurations of the Yoga series. Lenovo's staying in the news for its recent purchase of Motorola Mobility, but the laptop side of the house is still humming, too. The timing here seems a little odd given that we're nowhere near back-to-school season, but then again, it has the spotlight to itself. The company has just issued new, rugged ThinkPad devices aimed at the education market. Introduced for the first time at the Florida Education Technology Conference (FETC), the ThinkPad 11e series of laptops were "designed specifically for education and ruggedized for classroom performance." These will be headed to K-12 classrooms, and part of the fun is in the form factor. The 11e series will ship in two models: the traditional laptop... Read more...
If you’ve ever worked in a professional environment for an extended period of time, chances are you’ve used an IBM-come-Lenovo ThinkPad at some point. Their simple black rectangle designs with the little red dot on the keyboard are downright iconic... To that end, the latest notebook in the T-series, the Lenovo ThinkPad T440s, is one of the company’s slimmest and lightest to date (save for the X1 Carbon series). It weighs in at 3.5lbs (without the extra battery) and is under 0.8 inches at its thickest point. So is the ThinkPad T440s the same old business laptop with a slimmer profile and a couple of chassis tweaks, or is it a true evolution of the T-series? Lenovo Thinkpad T440s... Read more...
If you’ve ever worked in a professional environment for an extended period of time, chances are you’ve used an IBM-come-Lenovo ThinkPad at some point. Their simple black rectangle designs with the little red dot on the keyboard are downright iconic, but although Lenovo has made smaller refinements on the exterior design of some models, they have been evolving the guts and feature set of these machines to true ultrabook-level hardware. To that end, the latest notebook in the T-series, the Lenovo ThinkPad T440s, is one of the company’s slimmest and lightest to date (save for the X1 Carbon series). It was a long road to the top for Lenovo, the world's largest PC maker in terms of market share, and it got there by focusing on features customers want. If Lenovo's going to retain its crown, it will have to continue listening to its customers, and in fact that's exactly what the company claims inspired new enhancements to its ThinkPad performance and value portfolio. Lenovo's upgraded ThinkPad laptops are thinner, lighter, and last up to 13.7 hours on a single charge, yet they still support full connectivity capabilities that its commercial customers demand, the company says. And though they're less bulky, ThinkPad laptops are still MIL-SPEC tested for durability and reliability. "As the No.... Read more...

Looking to swing into Spring with a new notebook? If so, Lenovo has you covered. The laptop giant has just introduced its newest machine, the ThinkPad S431. As the PC industry as a whole dwindles in the face of mounting competition from tablets and smartphones, Lenovo is managing to keep things relatively flat -- viewed as a plus when everyone else is falling. And the ThinkPad line continues to be a hallmark, getting even thinner and lighter while maintaining the rigidity that business users so love. The S431 is a premium machine that's built for Windows 8. Lenovo claims that it can fit a 14" LCD into a 13" frame, with the rig boasting an aluminum LCD cover, a simplified interior with a 5-button... Read more...
Lenovo's first ThinkPad tablet was a bit of a disappointment to be candid. Even the best Android Honeycomb tablets were severely lacking on a number of fronts, back in the day. What was the use of a business tablet that couldn't run business apps? Well, forget all that. The ThinkPad Tablet 2 is a real business tablet, and one that actually feels like a ThinkPad--albeit one that has a detachable keyboard. It runs Windows; not Windows RT, not Android, not Windows XP, but real Windows 8 (or Windows 8 Pro). It has a gorgeous 10.1-inch 1366x768 LED IPS multitouch screen, an optional active digitizer stylus, optional mobile broadband, and ThinkPad good looks (if you're into that). Its optional keyboard... Lenovo added to its education portfolio with the release of the ThinkPad X131e, a Chromebook designed to withstand the substantial abuse doled out by kids in grades K-12.  The laptop includes a rubberized bumper around the top cover, reinforced corners for the inevitable drops, and strengthened hinges and brackets that are built to be opened and closed 50,000 times before giving out. "With the rugged features we added to the X131e, we've seen reduced failure rates in the field”, said Jerry Paradise, executive director of product marketing for the ThinkPad Product Group. “This is a huge benefit to schools and students.” Being a Chromebook, this ThinkPad taps into Google... Big news out of the Lenovo camp this morning. As the company prepares for CES, the public should start preparing for a very different Lenovo starting in April. Chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing sent out an e-mail to employees over the weekend that made clear that Lenovo would be dividing its business into two units: Lenovo and Think. It's probably a wise move. IBM's former ThinkPad brand took on a life of its own a long time ago, and Lenovo may serve itself well to break Think off and let that brand flourish on its own. Yuanqing seems to think that the split will allow the company to focus more effort on moving Think-labeled products to high-end purchasers, while Lenovo products can concentrate... Read more...
Lenovo announced the new ThinkPad X1 Carbon Touch. This ultrabook is optimized for use with Windows 8 and features touch capabilities. The X1 Carbon Touch weighs 3.4 pounds and measures just 20.8mm thick (about 0.82 inches). Thanks to its carbon fiber construction, the ultrabook offers strength and durability not found on other notebooks. The X1 Carbon Touch's 14-inch display (1600x900) supports 10-point multi-touch. The ultrabook also features a large multi-gesture glass touchpad. Processor options include Intel Core i5 and i7 options. For security, the X1 Carbon Touch offers an integrated fingerprint reader, Trusted Platform Module, and BIOS encryption.  Mobile broadband 3G is also available... Read more...
Although Lenovo is on the track to become the No. 1 PC maker in the world, the company recognizes it must compete in other markets as well if it wants to succeed long term. As consumers transition away from traditional PCs to using smartphones and tablets for an increasing number of tasks, companies such as Lenovo are recognizing the importance of focusing on the mobile market for long-term growth and success. Lenovo's PC business currently makes up the majority of the company's revenue. In the six months to September, 90 percent of Lenovo's total revenues were a result of the PC business. During the same period, the revenue from Lenovo's mobile Internet and digital home divisions doubled, due... Read more...
Ever heard of outsourcing? What about the reverse of that? While most PC makers have been shipping manufacturing to foreign lands for years, it's a Chinese-based company that's looking to bring some of those jobs back to America. Go figure. Lenovo, the company responsible for ThinkPad notebooks, has announced that it'll start producing PCs in North Carolina next year. The plant will start off with around 100 workers, but it's just the start. Lenovo plans to shell out a few million dollars to get it going, and it'll be located not far from Lenovo North America's operational headquarters. The company's quick to point out that this isn't a publicity stunt, though it's pretty much guaranteed to get... Read more...
Ultrabooks continue to be the hot trend in the Windows notebook arena. With the recent introduction of Intel's new, low power 3rd generation Ivy Bridge Core series processors, designs are becoming thinner with every iteration, while paradoxically it seems, performance continues to scale higher.  We've seen Ultrabook machines from virtually all the majors here at HotHardware and many of them are targeted at consumers on the go where thin is in, and not so much the business user, where practical usability, durability and performance are critical.   Lenovo however, is stepping outside the box with their latest addition to their ThinkPad lineup for road warriors and cubical commandos alike.... There's a new ThinkPad Tablet in town, and something tells us this one is going to be a lot more memorable than the prior one. The ThinkPad Tablet 2 for Windows 8 was unveiled this week, marking Lenovo's first slate to cater to Microsoft's forthcoming OS. It ships with an optional digitizer and pen for precision input, 3G wireless with Lenovo Mobile Access pay-as-you-go plans and 4G models, and of course, Win8. The unit itself measures 9.8mm thick, weighs under 1.3lbs. and offers a 10.1" display. There's also an optional keyboard and dock -- not surprising given that it's a ThinkPad -- and you'll also find a full-size USB port for connecting accessories. Unfortunately, Lenovo isn't saying how... Read more...
Lenovo's venerable ThinkPad line of notebooks has likely won more awards over time for the product's durable, functional design elements than just about any other notebook on the market. However, over the years it could be said that the business class workhorse line of laptops wasn't winning any beauty contests any time soon.  This wasn't necessarily a bad thing.  ThinkPad's traditionally have been known for their high quality fit and finish and unfailing dependability but there are far more glamorous notebooks out there for those looking for style over substance. However, recently Lenovo unveiled the new ThinkPad X1 Carbon Ultrabook and though there are some unmistakable ThinkPad design... Read more...
