Sony unveiled a special edition PS4 to celebrate the sale of 500 million consoles since the PS4 launched. The cool part about that special edition PS4 is that it was housed in a translucent blue chassis that let you see a bit of what’s inside and came with a matching controller. Microsoft is now getting in on the special edition translucent bandwagon with a new wireless Xbox One controller of its own. Rather than a swanky blue color, Microsoft is offering a black controller called the Xbox Wireless Controller Phantom Black Special Edition. The controller is translucent black that fades to a champagne gold color. The translucent chassis isn’t all the controller has that is special;... Read more...
Gamers have been looking forward to Red Dead Redemption 2 for a long time now. So far, we have seen trailers, but it has been mostly cut scenes instead of actual gameplay elements. We now have a new trailer that shows us a bunch of cutscenes and mixes that in with actual gameplay footage, and the game looks epic. The slightly longer than six-minute video gives us a glimpse at most aspects of the game from the poker mini-game to schlepping your way around the open world, fighting hand-to-hand, catching fugitives, and shooting. You can easily tell what is cutscenes and what is gameplay by looking for the little mini map in the bottom right corner. That is really your only indication that gameplay... Read more...
Microsoft's Xbox One was originally launched nearly 5 years ago, which means that many are already talking about what its successor will look like. We're now learning again that the new gaming console family will launch in 2020, likely sometime in the fall as with previous Xbox releases. The console is reportedly being developed under the codename Scarlett, and will be available in two primary configurations. The first console will function pretty much like what we expect from a modern console. It will likely still accept games that can be installed via Blu-ray disc, and will support games that you download from the Microsoft Store. We can expect for this console to pack in a processor and... Read more...
Microsoft has announced the results of its fiscal 2018 Q4 financials and things are looking very good over in Redmond. The software giant saw its gaming revenue grow a massive 39% year over year thanks to big Xbox software sales and services. This fiscal Q4 spanned April 1 through June 30 for Microsoft. Microsoft had 57 million active Xbox Live members for the quarter, which is down from the past two quarters where there were 59 million active users, but up year-over-year compared to the 53 million in fiscal Q4 2017. Microsoft racked up an increase in gaming revenue for the quarter of $643 million representing a 39% gain. That growth was driven by higher revenue from Xbox software and services. ... Read more...
There's nothing like a racing sim game that allows you to slip into the seats of hundreds of different exotic vehicles, but finding a title like this that's also open-world, and offers a compelling single-player and multi-player campaign is a bit harder. Fortunately, there have been some shining examples released even in recent years, including Test Drive Unlimited, The Crew, and of course, Forza Horizon. Since the first title was released in 2012, Forza Horizon has become hugely successful, something evidenced by the fact that a fourth title is coming out in a couple of months, making for a total of 4 Forza Horizons  releases in just six years. That kind of expedited development can sometimes... Read more...
Is your launch day Xbox One seemingly a little grey around the temples these days, and you don't see the point in upgrading to an Xbox One S or the more powerful Xbox One X? Well, we know that Microsoft is currently developing its next generation Xbox console, and a new report suggests that the device may be a little over two years away. This information comes from Thurrott, which indicates that the next Xbox is being developed under the codename Scarlett. However, the big news is that there won't just be a single device launched, as was the case with the Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Instead, Scarlett encompasses an entire family of devices.  The devices will reportedly launch in 2020,... Read more...
Lots of gamers out there will have very fond memories of the 2001 Xbox game Halo: Combat Evolved. Now, the very first ever Halo arcade game has been unveiled and the game takes place in the same timeframe as that 2001 fan favorite. Halo: Fireteam Raven is a collaboration of Microsoft and 343 Industries with Raw Thrills and Play Mechanix. The game is one of those four player outings you have probably seen in the arcade before with a giant cabinet with four guns and four seats inside. The cooperative game lets you fight alongside Master Chief to stop the Covenant and save the galaxy. Players will also have to fight the parasitic Flood in the game, assuming your coins and prowess get you to that... Read more...
Earlier this week we caught a glimpse at the big slab of a controller that had leaked that was claimed to be the new Xbox Adaptive Controller (XAC). The odd thing about the image we saw was that it didn’t seem to have much in the way of improved accessibility other than massive "A" and "B" buttons. The D-pad didn’t seem much larger and we wondered why the buttons would be so huge, yet the D-pad basically regular size. It turns out the XAC is a controller on its own, but also acts as a hub for accessory devices. ArsTechnica has spent some time with the interesting new controller at the Xbox Inclusive Tech Lab and it makes a lot more sense now than it did on Monday. The massive buttons... Read more...
Microsoft is a major force when it comes to gaming thanks to its Xbox One console, popular first-party games, and the fact that Windows 10 is the platform of choice for many PC gamers. One of the biggest things that Microsoft pushes for in many aspects of the software and hardware it builds is inclusion and accessibility. Windows 10 is chocked full of accessibility features for those with physical limitations. The image you see above is said to be a leaked shot of Microsoft's accessible Xbox One controller. It may look like a DJ controller for a music game, but the two large black circles are for the A and B buttons. Without anything for scale, it's hard to tell just how large the controller... Microsoft is teasing a potentially major announcement regarding original Xbox backwards compatibility on the Xbox One. In a blog post, the company said it will have sometime to share on the matter on the next episode of Inside Xbox, which is scheduled to air on Tuesday, April 10 at 3:30 pm Pacific (6:30 pm Pacific). In the meantime, Microsoft is content to let users' minds run wild with what is in store. "One of our most common requests is for Original Xbox Backward Compatibility news, and we’ll be starting off the show with a big update on just that. Stay tuned next Monday for a full breakdown of the news and content you can expect on Inside Xbox. Mostly full that is, as we reserve the... Read more...
Your mama, and now Microsoft, wants you to watch your mouth. Microsoft "may stop providing Services" or "close your Microsoft account" if you "publicly display or use the Services to share inappropriate content or material". "Offensive language" was listed as potentially inappropriate content. The new services agreement was posted this month and will go into effect Tuesday, May 1st for U.S. users.  The service agreement applies to a number of Microsoft services such as Bing, Cortana MSN.com, Office, Skype, and Xbox Live. If one's Microsoft services are cancelled, either by themselves or by Microsoft, they will lose their licenses and other products they have acquired. They will no longer... Read more...
If you are in the market for a new Xbox One X so you can play your favorite games in sexy 4K resolution, a smoking good deal has turned up on eBay courtesy of Newegg. The deal is a bundle that will net you an Xbox One X, extra game controller, Grand Theft Auto V, and Destiny 2 all for $499.99. The price of the deal also includes free shipping (and no tax for many people). Newegg says on the eBay listing that the list price for this bundle is $679.96. You can opt to add a 3-year protection plan from SquareTrade for another $69.98. The deal is for brand-new unopened console and accessories. The console itself is black and has a 1TB hard drive inside. If you have somehow not followed the Xbox One... Read more...
Microsoft's Xbox One X hasn't needed a lot of incentives for it to sell well with gamers, but with a cost of $499.99 USD, it's a hard pill for some to swallow for some - especially if they already have an original Xbox One. Regardless, as it turns out, etailer Rakuten (formerly known as Buy.com) is currently offering a stellar deal that could net you the console for a lot less than MSRP, and with bonus store cash piled on for future use. Despite its $499.99 SRP, Rakuten sells the Xbox One X for $514.99 before discount, but as of the time of writing, a coupon found right inside of the product page itself on the site will drop $75 off the price in an instant. Further, rewards gained from this... Read more...
Retro gaming is hotter right now than it has ever been, as evidenced by the wildly popular (and pint-sized) NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition consoles from Nintendo. However, Nintendo is not the only one getting in on the action. Microsoft announced at E3 earlier this year that Xbox One's backwards compatibility would be expanding to include games from the original Xbox. Thanks to a recent Twitter post by a notorious Microsoft leaker, we now know exactly which Xbox games are headed. Twitter user WalkingCat got his hands on a screen capture of several original Xbox titles that are headed to the Xbox One. The list includes previously announced games such as Crimson Skies and Fusion Frenzy,... Read more...
Odds are that most of what regular Americans know about submarines comes from what we see in movies. Those subs always have a large mast that comes down in the middle of a room for the periscope. The person manning that periscope simply spins in a circle to look out and see what's going on above the surface of the water. However, most modern subs don't operate in this manner.  The sub in the image above is one of the U.S. Navy's newest submarines called the USS John Warner. Inside the advanced attack submarine are lot of high-resolution screens that show all manner of detail on the sub including images of what the periscope mast is seeing above the water with feeds from high-definition cameras.... Xbox Project Scorpio's hype train has been moving at a good clips for months, but we suspect that it's about to kick into a higher gear. In a new blog post, Xbox chief Phil Spencer reveals that the console's full unveiling will take place at the upcoming E3 expo, just a mere two months from now. Spencer reiterates some of Microsoft's recent moves to help developers produce content for both the Xbox One and Windows 10 platforms. At Game Developers Conference last month, the company announced its new "Xbox Live Creators" program, which allows anyone to turn their regular Xbox One console into a lighter version of the full developer kit, removing some longstanding roadblocks in the process. Xbox... Read more...
We’re probably going to have to wait until E3 to get a glimpse at what Project Scorpio looks like (and perhaps even its official name), but for now, we’re being given additional insight into what is inside Microsoft’s upcoming 4K gaming console, the true successor to the Xbox One. We had previously been told that the console would have 6 TFLOPs of compute power and that it would have an internal power supply, but that was about all that Microsoft was willing to disclose. However, the folks at Digital Foundry were given exclusive access to Microsoft’s Xbox Skunk Works and what the team is cooking up for Project Scorpio. Needless to say, Project Scorpio is a beastly machine,... Read more...
We have known for several months now that Microsoft is planning to release an upgrade Xbox console codenamed Project Scorpio. It is not exactly a secret—Microsoft confirmed its existence more than eight months ago at last year's E3 convention, though it stopped way short of offering up more than just a few details. Well, more information will presumably be available tomorrow, as Digital Foundry has promised an exclusive "Xbox Scorpio" reveal on Eurogamer. The reveal will take place early in the morning for those of you living in the Pacific time zone—6 AM to be precise. That means 9 AM Eastern, and 2 PM in the U.K. So depending on where you live, it might be a good idea to bark at Siri or Google... Read more...
If things go to plan, Microsoft will release an upgraded console capable of playing games at a 4K resolution later this year. It is called Project Scorpio and it will have more powerful components than what is found in today's Xbox One S consoles. There are many questions surrounding the unreleased console, including whether or not gamers will need a 4K television to take full advantage of it.Turns out that will not be the case, not if Windows Central's "trusted sources" know what they're talking about. According to those sources. Microsoft will highlight numerous benefits of playing on Project Scorpio using a Full HD 1080p display. One of them is better efficiency (and assumed better performance)... Read more...
While the PC gaming hardware market is hitting new highs and 4K gaming is readily accessible thanks to NVIDIA Pascal GPU architecture, console gamers aren’t as fortunate. Console gamers either have to contend with limited quasi-4K support with the PlayStation 4 Pro, or wait until the fall release of Microsoft’s Project Scorpio. Microsoft promises that Project Scorpio will provide a more compelling 4K experience with fewer restrictions on games. Although critical specs surrounding Project Scorpio have been few and far between up to this point, Digital Foundry claims to have come in possession of a document from Microsoft’s development portal that sheds more light on the supercharged Xbox... As 2016 winds down, the rumor mill is running at full power with expectations for 2017. Microsoft's upcoming 'Scorpio' console hasn't escaped the rumor mill's churn, despite the fact that it will not become available for purchase until late 2017. We've covered in the past that the only reason Microsoft announced 'Project Scorpio' already is because it didn't want to have to deal with raging fans wondering where a PlayStation 4 Pro competitor is. To that end, Microsoft has been kind enough to give us a couple of specs, so we're not totally oblivious to what we'll be dealing with at launch. With the PS4 Pro, Sony delivered a more powerful PlayStation that can play every single PS4 game ever released,... Read more...
With the Windows 10 Anniversary Update set to launch on August 2, it seems Microsoft's Xbox had interest in beating their desktop counterparts to the punch by releasing the Xbox One Anniversary Update right now. It's probably a smart move on Microsoft's part to roll out the releases like this, as these platform versions are meant to complement each other. If you have an Xbox One, it means there will be no waiting to take advantage of the interoperability between the two platforms, once you upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10. So what's included? Well, if you enjoy talking to artificial intelligence, you may appreciate the fact that Cortana finally makes its Xbox debut. You're able... Read more...
