Experiencing strong demand for your products isn't inherently a bad thing, as we're certain that most high-volume companies would love to see products flying off the shelves while the revenue comes pouring in. However, it can become a big problem when your manufacturing capacity can't keep up with that insatiable demand, and that as we've reported on numerous occasions, is the problem that Intel is facing at the moment with its popular Core and Xeon processor lines. Intel's 14nm process node is most certainly long in the tooth, but the company has tried to make best of the situation with refinements over the past four years. With that being said, Intel is actually recalling one of its recent processors based on 14nm++ lithography: the Xeon E-2274G, which is a member of the Coffee Lake family. In this case, Intel is recalling retail boxed versions of the processor, which come with the company's on DHA-A heatsink (P/N: E97378-003) in the box. The problem, according to Intel, is that the stock cooler "does not meet the requirement for thermal performance" for the Xeon E-2274G, which is rated at 83 TDP. Update 11/6/19: Since publishing this article, Intel has gone back and updated its blog post on Medium to clarify a few points raised by Kennedy. The most significant one is adding benchmark data from an updated version of GROMACS (2019.4), as that version is better optimized to leverage processors based on AMD's Zen 2 architecture. In doing so, Intel states it "found no material difference" to data it originally obtained. Intel kicked off volume shipments over its 10th generation 10nm Ice Lake processors for the consumer laptop market during Q3, and it looks as though roughly a year's time will elapse before we see Ice Lake-based designs arrive for the workstation and server markets (i.e. Xeon processors). A presentation slide taken from an ASUS IoT seminar gives us a glimpse at what Intel has in store with these Ice Lake-SP processors. For starters, the processors will be paired with the Whitley chipset and will use Socket P+ in 2S configurations. Intel on Monday unveiled a bunch of new Xeon W-2200 series processors at comparatively aggressive price points. The new Glacier Falls CPUs range in core and thread count from 4-cores/8-threads up to 18-cores/36-threads, and are up to around 50 percent less expensive than the previous generation Xeon W-2100 series. Increased competition from rival AMD has seen Intel shake up pricing on its higher end processors. It appears as though Intel is readying a new next unit of computing (NUC) mini PC, this time time with a Xeon processor option. Codenamed "Quartz Canyon," a leaked slide indicates Intel is targeting entry workstation tasks, including content creation, CAD and manufacturing design, financial services, and other similar chores. Assuming the slide is real, the Quartz Canyon NUC will be configurable with up to an 8-core Xeon E or 9th generation Core i7 vPro processor. Lenovo is turning its attention to its mobile workstation family, specifically its ThinkPad P Series which are getting upgraded with more potent processors and onboard graphics. Kicking things off are the ThinkPad P53, which is being billed as the world’s most powerful 15-inch class mobile workstation, and the ThinkPad P73, its 17-inch counterpart. AMD has managed to reassert itself in the enthusiast computing discussion, thanks to its current gen Zen CPU and, to a lesser extent, Vega GPU architectures. Between Ryzen and Threadripper, there are now many compelling non-Intel options for power users. In October of last year, when Intel officially unveiled its 9th Generation Core series processors, the company also took the opportunity to announce a semi-new breed of workstation processor, namely the Xeon W-3175X. Intel has sent out press invites for its "Intel Architectural Day", which will take place on Tuesday, December 11th. The chip company will hold two primary sessions during the day: one which will pertain to “Intel Architecture Strategy” and a second that will delve into "Advanced Client and Data Centric Architectures and Technologies". Intel and AMD both have two high-powered server processors launches coming up next year which are set to shake up the enterprise market. Intel is the runaway market leader with its Xeon family of processors, but AMD is making slow and steady progress to challenge that market share with its EPYC processors. AMD recently posted its best quarterly earnings in seven years, with its Ryzen and Epyc product lines boosting the company's bottom line. The reception to its Zen-based products is obviously good news for AMD. For rival Intel, however, AMD's resurgence puts added pressure to execute its roadmaps. It also could be leading to price cuts. Where this is particularly interesting is in the server market. Lenovo has trotted out a pair of new mobile workstations including the ThinkPad P1 and the ThinkPad P72 that are thinner and more portable than you might expect. Of these two workstations, the thinnest of them is the P1 and this workstation class machine is only 0.7-inches thick. The beefier ThinkPad P72 is still only an inch thick. Lenovo manages to cram serious workstation hardware inside the rigs and keep it cool with choices of 8th gen Intel Core processors and Xeon hardware inside the rigs. Lenovo has pulled the wraps off a new mobile professional workstation: the ThinkPad P52. The laptop is Lenovo’s very first VR-Ready Certified mobile workstation that is available in a relatively compact 15-inch chassis. Depending on your computing needs, you can select from either 8th generation Intel Xeon or Core i7 hexa-core processors, which can support up to 128GB of DDR4 memory (ECC modules up to 16GB, non-ECC modules up to 32GB). MSI has unveiled a new workstation computer called the Vortex W25 and it is aimed at professionals out there who need a compact workstation that still has enough performance for complex tasks. The W25 is the world’s first 2.5L desktop computer with an NVIDIA Quadro P5200 GPU. Along with that GPU is the latest 8th generation Intel Core i7 "Coffee Lake" processors. Intel's next Xeon server platform is called Cascade Lake, and it looms just around the corner. After that, however, Intel will launch its 10nm Ice Lake chips. Details on Ice Lake have been pretty sparse up to this point, though some key details about the platform has been revealed by Power Stamp Alliance, which tasks itself with creating collaborative solutions for 48V-to-low-voltage on-boad isolated and non-isolated DC-DC power converters, and its members such as Bel Power Solutions. Hewlett-Packard is cranking out a new family of ZBook mobile workstations, and as you might expect with new devices being announced this week, they are powered by Intel's newest 8th generation processors. The highlight of the family is no doubt the new ZBook Studio x360 G5, which is a convertible machine that can be optioned up with mobile Xeon power. HP is billing the ZBook Studio x360 G5 as the world's most powerful convertible PC, and there's no reason to scoff at that notion. It appears that the Spectre-Meltdown nightmare for Intel and its customers is finally nearing resolution. The chip giant has been working overtime to develop and distribute microcode updates for its processors to combat these vulnerabilities, and this morning announced that 100 percent of its processors released in the past five years have microcode updates to protect "against the side-channel method vulnerabilities." Intel apparently has some additional Coffee Lake processors incoming that are destined for laptop machines and mobile workstations, at least according to a recent leak on the interwebs. Intel's Coffee Lake-H processors range from the quad-core Core i5-8300H on up to the hexa-core Core i9-8950HK on the consumer side, and include some tasty Xeon treats for business workstation users. The Core i5-8300H and Core i5-8400H are both quad-core processors built on Intel's 14nm manufacturing process (14++ actually). Apple first announced its professional market-minded iMac Pro at WWDC in June, and six months later, the company is finally getting around to releasing the computer. Apple confirmed today that the all-in-one iMac Pro will be available starting December 14th, and it will have a starting price of $4,999 (which was previously known). The original iMac family has been an unabashed consumer-centric machine with admirable processing performance, and passable graphics (even offering dedicated GPUs in some configurations). Intel recently touted an array of benchmarks comparing its latest Xeon Scalable Processors (Skylake-SP) in a two-socket configuration to the performance of a similarly configured 2P Xeon E5026xx v4 (Broadwell-EP) system and a competing dual socket AMD EPYC 7601-based system. In discussing the benchmarks, however, Intel makes it clear that the results are all externally published and that the they are third-party auditable, to ensure no one can cry foul when comparing the results.  It should be noted, however, that Intel used its own compilers for these tests.
