Acer Revo Build Bring's Modular LEGO-Like Stacking To Mini PCs
While it may seem intimidating to first time system builders, It's really not all that difficult to roll your own PC -- you just have to be able to use a screwdriver without poking your eye out or otherwise injuring yourself. If for some reason you don't have that skill, Acer's new Revo Build might be more up your alley.
The Revo Build is a stackable PC that starts off as a NUC-sized 1 liter "block" measuring 4.9 inches by 4.9 inches by 2.2 inches. That's the base of the system, which contains an Intel Pentium or Celeron processor with integrated graphics, up to 8GB of DDR4 memory, and 32GB of eMMC memory. It also sports three USB 3.0 ports, HDMI and DisplayPort output, an Ethernet port, a headset jack, SD card reader, and Windows 10 software.
You can add functionality to the base system by stacking blocks. They connect through pogo pins with magnetic alignment so there's never a need to fuss with wires. The concept is reminiscent of Lenovo's ThinkPad Stack, a modular design concept that was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this year.
There will be a handful of blocks available at launch, including 500GB and 1TB hot-swappable portable hard drive blocks. Acer also plans to release a wireless power bank, an audio block with speakers and microphone, and other expansions, all of which can be stacked on the base Revo Build. Alternatively, they can also be used independently or with other PCs.
The Revo Build will be available in EMEA in October starting at €199 (around $224 in U.S. currency) followed by a launch in China in December starting at ¥1,999 (~$315). Acer didn't say if it plans to bring the Revo Build to the U.S. market at a later date.
