Android N Is Now Officially Known As Android Nougat, Sorry Nutella Fans

Well folks, it’s official. Android N finally has a name, and it’s called Nougat. Last month, Google launched website allowing the general public to submit suggestions on potential Android N names, and it looks as though the delectable, chewy treat won out.

To be honest, the Nougat name is a bit deflating and just don’t have the same ring to it as Marshmallow or Lollipop (and why do we need two chewy treats in a row?). The internet seems to be mostly “meh” about the name, with many having placed their hopes with Nutella.

With that being said, Android N is due out later this summer, and should launch alongside two new Nexus flagships (it could also serve as a focal point for Google’s rumored first branded smartphone). Android N is currently available as a Developer Preview (now on its fourth build) for the following devices:

  • Nexus 6
  • Nexus 5X
  • Nexus 6P
  • Nexus Player
  • Nexus 9
  • Pixel C
  • Sony Xperia Z3

Android Nougat — we still don’t have a version number yet — brings a lot of fresh features to the table including the Vulkan 3D rendering API, multi-window and Java 8 support, direct reply notifications for all apps, Launcher Shortcuts, Data Saver Mode, Project Tango and Daydream VR support, and a wealth other niceties under the hood.
