BMW i Vision Dynamics Concept EV Has Tesla Model S In Its Crosshairs

Move over Tesla, here comes BMW in the fast lane and it has grand aspirations of zooming out in front. The German automaker hopes to have 25 electric vehicle models by the year 2025, a dozen of which will be pure electric instead of hybrid variants. BMW stated its ambitious goal during the Frankfurt Motor Show, where it unveiled its new i Vision Dynamics, a four-door coupe that could give Tesla's Model S a run for its money.

The BMW i Vision Dynamics has a range of 373 miles (600 kilometers) with a top speed of 120 miles per hour (200 km/h). It also boasts an acceleration of 0-62 MPH (0-100 km/h) in four seconds. In other words, it offers the speed and acceleration performance of a gas powered vehicle, while going the distance on a single charge to boot.


"At the BMW Group, the future of electric mobility has already arrived," Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW AG, said in a statement. In addition to talking about BMW's future goals, he noted that "with the BMW i Vision Dynamics we are showcasing how we envisage future electric mobility between the i3 and i8: a dynamic and progressive, four-door Gran Coupe. We are therefore electrifying the heart of the BMW brand and, at the same time, elevating BMW i into a totally new dimension."

BMW has so for offered up the i3 and i8 in its i-model lineup. The production version of the i Vision Dynamics will sit in between those two vehicles, with BMW's familiar aesthetic. BMW says the i Vision Dynamics is a further evolution of the company's classical proportions. It has a long wheelbase, a flowing roofline, and short overhangs to create an elegant and dynamic profile that is not over the top. It keeps with the identity of BMW i, which is "I do more with less."


This is a mid-size vehicle that measures 190 inches long. BMW was short on details, though the long wheelbase suggests a roomy interior. Oddly enough, BMW said nothing direct of the vehicle's self-driving capabilities, though alluded to the feature by saying the car's underlying sensors turn its kidneys into an "intelligence surface."

There is no word yet on when the i Vision Dynamics will be available or how much it will cost.
