Cyberpunk 2077 Vastly Different Now Than Its Debut, An Elder Scrolls Deus Ex Style Mashup

Cyberpunk 2077
As we approach E3, one thing we are looking forward to is what kind of development CD Projekt RED, the development studio behind The Witcher series, has made on Cyberpunk 2077. Set nearly six decades into the future, Cyberpunk 2077 will thrust players into an open world that is very different from what life is like today, in 2019. But what will the gameplay actually be like? A cross between The Elder Scrolls and Deus Ex, apparently, with elements of Vampire Bloodlines.

Before we get to that, let's talk about the 48-minute gameplay demo the developer showed off last year. At the time, CD Projekt Red was very clear that Cyberpunk 2077 was a work in progress, and that the demo did not represent the final look of the game. Now a year later, the developer has reiterated that detail.

"Well as you know the game is still in development, and obviously we want it to come out the best it can be... there are obviously many things that we have not taught about the game yet, there are things that we are still working on, then I would say that the game is quite different from the gameplay, but as I said, there are still details in which we are currently working," CD Projekt Red Quest Director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz told Area Jugones.

That is a translated excerpt, but the gist of what he said is that Cyberpunk 2077 is very different now than what we saw last year, which at the time was "basically just a small fragment of the game." It's since been polished up and fleshed out.

According to Tomaszkiewicz, Cyberpunk 2077 is an open world game with a strong narrative component, set in a dark future. It is also an RPG—decisions have consequences, and so everything you do in the game, every decision you make, matters. This also means there are many different ways to play the game.

The developers drew inspiration from past titles, including Vampire Bloodlines, The Elder Scrolls, and Deus Ex. Tomaszkiewicz considers Vampire Bloodlines the "perfect example of a first person game and RPG," and of course The Elder Scrolls is hugely popular. Cyberpunk 2077 will be less fantasy than The Elder Scrolls, though.

"In short, both Vampire Bloodlines and Deus Ex are my two greatest inspirations," Tomaszkiewicz says.

We can hardly wait to see how it all comes together in the end. Hopefully CD Projekt RED will offer up a playable demo at E3, which starts on June 11, with an actual release not far behind.
