Dell Becomes Latest OEM To Preload Microsoft Office On Android Tablets
A big part of Microsoft's software strategy is to expand its reach into other platforms. As part of that, the company is pushing its Office productivity apps on Android devices, and one of its newest (and biggest) OEM partners is Dell, one of nearly a dozen companies that have agreed to pre-install Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, OneDrive, and Skype on their Android devices coming to market later this year.
The other firms include regional OEMs TrekStor of Germany, JP Sa Couto of Portugal, Datamatic of Italy, DEXP of Russia, Hipstreet of Canada, QMobile of Pakistan, Tecno of Africa, and Casper of Turkey. Microsoft has also brought on board Pegatron, a leading original device manufacturer.
"We’ve proven that we’re not afraid to look outside ourselves to reinvent ourselves. We’ve received fantastic customer feedback for making Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive and Skype available across all platforms. But, we’re far from done. Now we see an opportunity to turn our focus to our device partners — easing mobile access to great apps and services for customers by pre-installing them directly on the device," said Peggy Johnson, Executive Vice President, Business Development at Microsoft.
It's an easy sell for OEMs like Dell, who in turn can offer its customers a more robust Android experience, one in which they can be both entertained and productive. And for Microsoft, signing on hardware partners to pre-install Office apps on Android helps the company cast a wider net and ties in with its mobile-first, cloud-first initiative.
