Dell Launches Inspiron 13z & 14z Ultra-Thin Notebooks

Dell added to its newest new line of z-series notebooks with the announcement today of the Inspiron 13z and 14z. The pair complements the recently-released XPS 15z by introducing more options for thin Dell notebooks, but these come in at a lower cost; the Inspiron 14z, for instance, starts at $599.99, while the XPS 15z starts at $999.99.

The Inspiron 14z is available now on Dell.com in the U.S. and elsewhere, but the 13z has only been released so far in certain Asian countries.

However, both models, according to the press release, will feature second-gen Intel Core i3 or i5 processors, 720p HD displays, and on-processor Intel HD Graphics. Other features the two have in common include built-in SRS Premium Sound HD, Intel’s WiDi technology, built-in media card readers, WiFi (although at least one version of the Inspiron 14z also has WiMax), Bluetooth 3.0, and USB 3.0. They also both ship with Windows 7 Home Premium and sport the Dell Stage Interface and the Nero-powered SyncUP.

The Inspiron 13z has a 13.3-inch widescreen display, storage options including a 320GB or 500GB hard drive or a 128GB SSD, and up to 8GB of RAM.

The Inspiron 14z has a 14-inch widescreen HD display and also boasts an internal tray-load ODD (an 8x CD/DVD+/-RW dual-layer burner). Available configuration options include either a Core i3-2330M (2.2GHz) or i5-2410M (2.3GHz) processor; 4GB, 6GB, or 8GB of DDR3-1333 RAM; and a 500GB, 640GB, or 750GB hard drive.

Unfortunately, there is no SSD option for the Inspiron 14z, and if you want speedier hard drive performance, you should opt for the 7500RPM 750GB drive over the 5400RPM 500GB and 640GB drives.

In terms of size, these notebooks are no joke--the Inspiron 14z weighs less than a pound and measures between 0.92 and 1 inch thick. It’s good to see a couple of thin-and-light notebooks that pack some real performance under the hood; we'll be interested to see what else Dell has in store for the z series in the coming months.
