Dell XPS 12 2-in-1 Tablet Has Magnetic Personality, 2.7GHz Core m5, 4K Display
We got our first look at Dell’s brand new XPS 12 nearly a month ago when renders and a few specs of the device leaked to the Internet. But today, Dell is officially spilling the beans on its impressive mobile device that is sure to turn quite a few heads.
The XPS 12 is Dell’s latest take on on the 2-in-1 form-factor, and it appears to be the company’s best effort to date. When docked with its keyboard, the XPS 12 looks like any other Windows 10 notebook out there. However, rather than using mechanical springs and latches, the XPS 12 tablet attaches to its keyboard dock using simple magnets. That makes insertion and extraction of the tablet to and from into its keyboard dock a simple affair that can be accomplished using just one hand.
Lurking under the hood of the tablet itself is Intel’s Skylake-based Core m5-6Y54 processor, which can be clocked at up to 2.7GHz. 8GB of RAM comes standard — there is no option to upgrade to 16GB — and you can select from either a 128GB of 256GB SSD.
On the graphics front, you’ll find an integrated Intel HD Graphics 515 solution that powers a 12.5-inch FHD (1920x1080) display. Amazingly enough, Dell also offers an optional UltraSharp 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160) option that checks in at 353 pixels per inch and has a 100 percent color gamut.
The XPS 12 incorporates two Thunderbolt 3 ports, which of course use a USB Type-C connector. This allows users to not only power their device, but to also connect another peripheral at the same time (unlike the Apple MacBook, which features a single USB-C port that handles both charging and peripheral duties). Dell has even included a USB to USB-C adapter in the box, given the fact that most of us don’t have any USB-C peripherals yet. The XPS 12 also supports stylus input, but it’s available as optional accessory — you can’t win ‘em all.
The XPS 12 ships later this year for $999 with a Core m5 processor, 128GB SSD, and FHD display. Opting for the 256GB SSD and the 4K display will add $300 to the price.
