Dell claims the XPS 13 is the most powerful machine in the 13-inch class with a variety of quad-core 8th gen Intel processors including available Core i3-8145U, Core i5-8265U, and a Core i7-8565U. The processor can be paired with 4GB to 16GB of LPDDR3 RAM and PCIe SSD storage of 128GB to 2TB. Dell claims battery life is up to 21 hours per charge and the notebook offers machined aluminum in platinum silver with black carbon fiber palm rest or new frost or rose gold exteriors with an arctic white woven glass fiber palm rest.

The machine is also the first unit with GORE Thermal Insulation to keep the computer cool. Connectivity options include dual Thunderbolt 3 ports, DisplayPort, USB-C 3.1 port, microSD card slot, and a headset port. The chiclet keyboard is backlit, and a Windows Hello fingerprint reader is an option. Killer 1435 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2 are integrated. The XPS 13 starts at $899.99 with availability for most versions this month, the FHD touchscreen version in silver and black will launch after this month.

Dell's Inspiron 13 7000 2-in-1 and Inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1 notebooks share many of the same features, including an available pen garage in the Black Edition flavors that allows a full-size, active pen to be stored in the hinge, and held in place with magnets. The hinge rotates so that the user is always presented with the pen no matter the mode the tablet is in. The modes include laptop mode, stand mode, tent mode, or tablet mode. The cooling system for the notebook directs hot air through the back of the laptop and out the hinge and is designed to prevent the vents from being blocked by sheets or cushions. Dell says that the hinge has a patent pending.

The Active Pen, which is included on the Black Edition models, allows users to draw or write naturally providing a pen-on-paper experience. A redesigned keyboard features a new power key with a fingerprint reader for a simpler keyboard area; the 15-inch version has a number pad. Dell uses Adaptive thermal technology to allow the 2-in-1 to detect when it's sitting on a desk or being handled and moved around in tablet mode and adjusts the performance profile to generate less heat when mobile. Both machines are fitted with USB Type-C ports that support charging and can send images to external displays. Both machines are offered in silver without the pen garage as the Inspiron 13/15 7000 2-in-1, the versions with the pen are called Black Edition. Availability will start in June and July with pricing announced closer to launch.
