Dell's USB-C 6-In-1 Mobile Adapter Delivers Video, LAN And Data Connections In Convenient Puck Form

Dell USB-C Mobile Adapter

Perhaps one day in the future, all of our digital connections will be wireless, eliminating the need for wires and cables entirely. In the here and now, however, there are a plethora of devices that require a physical connection. To help wrangle them all, Dell has designed a portable, puck-shaped multi-purpose adapter that looks to be especially handy for mobile road warriors.

The Dell DA300 USB-C mobile adapter is a 6-in-1 gadget that provides universal connections to video, LAN, and data. It allows users to connect multiple devices at the same time, including displays, printers, projectors, and Ethernet. There is no product page yet, but from what we can tell in the video, it offers up HDMI, VGA, and DisplayPort connectors, along with a USB 3.0 Type-A port, a USB-C port, and an RJ45 LAN port.

Dell's device connects to PCs and laptops by way of a retractable USB-C cable—just rotate the puck to extend the cable. Where we see this being especially useful is with laptops that have limited connectivity options. Some of the newer ultrabook models have been dumping traditional ports in favor of USB, in part because the focus has been on increasingly thinner (and lighter) designs.

There are no drivers or special software to install, it is all plug-and-play, and compatible with all major operating systems. In addition, Dell says the puck is capable of 4K video and 10Gbps SuperSpeed USB data connectivity. It also features a few built-in business class features, including:
  • MAC address pass-through
  • PXE boot
  • Wake-on-LAN
In short, this is a more functional upgrade to the previous generation DA200, which itself is a 4-in-1 adapter offering HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, and USB 3.0 connectivity, by way for a USB-C cable. That one is currently on sale at Dell for $65.

There is no word yet on when the new DA300 USB-C mobile adapter will be available or how much it will cost.
