Freecom's ToughDrive Sport External HDD, which was unveiled just a few
months back, already had our attention, but now the company's aiming
even higher by introducing a new product with a "world's first" label
attached. The all new Mobile Drive XS is the world's smallest 3.5"
external hard drive, and it sits well beside the Mobile Drive XXS,
which is the world's smallest 2.5" external hard drive.
The fanless device weighs just 860g (1.89 pounds) and has been created in collaboration with Belgian designer Sylvain Willenz. We're told that it uses a a form-fitting rubber enclosure to help reduce vibration and improve grip on surfaces, and of course, it gets all the power it needs from a powered USB port. Furthermore, the Turbo USB 2.0 technology offers up transfer rates that are 30% faster than similar, non-Turbo drives. It's shipping now in Europe for €79 ($106) and €109 ($146) for a 500GB and 1TB model, respectively.

Designed in collaboration with acclaimed Belgian designer Sylvain Willenz, the sleek new Hard Drive XS is covered in a form-fitting rubber enclosure that ensures optimal grip and reduced vibration, combining functionality with refinement. The fanless system means the drive is almost silent and weighing in at just 860 grams, it is easy to transport and makes sharing data more convenient than ever. In addition, the Turbo USB 2.0 connection offers transfer speeds of up to 30 percent faster than competing solutions for downloading or uploading data.
As the big brother of the Freecom Mobile Drive XXS, which picked up both an iF product design award and a red dot design award ‘best of the best’ in 2009, the Hard Drive XS is the latest development in Freecom’s ongoing pursuit to make high quality storage more accessible and useable in any environment. By simply plugging the hard drive into a USB port on a computer, users can back up important data and store office work, digital photos, music and movies in one central location.
