Global Motorola Moto X Play Arriving Stateside As Verizon DROID Maxx 2

Late last month, Motorola announced new models to its mid-range and flagship smartphone lines with the introduction of the third generation Moto G and third generation Moto X. However, the company also announced a third model, the Moto X Play, which sported a honkin’ 3630 mAh battery.

The only problem is that the Moto X Play wasn’t destined for U.S. customers, leaving Motorola fans that crave long-lasting battery life the cold shoulder — or so we thought. Just as the global Moto X Style is known to the U.S. market as the Moto X Pure, the Moto X Play will arrive stateside under a new name: the DROID Maxx 2.

The smartphone’s official designation is Motorola XT1565 and it will unfortunately be a Verizon Wireless exclusive. It’s the logical follow-up to Verizon’s original DROID Maxx, which debuted in 2013. Given that this is merely a rebadge of the global Moto X Play, that means that U.S. customers will be treated to the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor with 2GB of RAM, 5.5-inch 1080p display, and impressive 21MP f/2.0 rear camera with dual-tone LED flash.

The headlining feature of the DROID Maxx 2, of course, will be the 3630 mAh battery which is confirmed in the above photos of the device. All-day battery life should not be an issue for this smartphone — for comparison, the Moto X Pure is equipped with a 3000 mAh battery.

There is one peculiarity, however, that Android Police has discovered in dissecting the numerous pictures and CPU-Z screenshots that depict the DROID Maxx 2 — the app is reporting that the device only has 8GB of internal storage which is highly unlikely given the positing of the smartphone in Verizon’s lineup. We’re hoping that this is just a glitch with the app and not indicative of shipping devices — after all, the Moto X Play is available in 16GB or 32GB configurations.
