Is Google Planning a 10-inch Slate? Evidence Says Yes

As was long rumored to be the case, Google's Nexus 7 tablet is real, as confirmed and unveiled by the sultan of search at the Google I/O conference this week. Given the device's size and spec sheet, it seems clear Google is going after the same market currently dominated by Amazon's Kindle Fire, and not necessarily the iPad. But fear not if you're pulling for an Android invasion in the Apple space, it appears Google has plans to infiltrate that market, too.

Word on the Web is that Google is also going to release full sized 10-inch tablet. There are whispers that AU Optronics (AUO) and Wintek will supply the touch panels got Google's 10-inch slate, with the latter already supplying touchscreens for the Nexus 7.

Unfortunately, there isn't much concrete info to go on. Missing from all the chatter is any talk of specific hardware specs or even a general time frame for when this might happen. If we had to guess, we'd say a 10-inch tablet isn't likely to debut for several months, and probably not at all in 2012. If the Nexus 7 is successful, Google could own the holiday shopping season without a 10-inch tablet in its lineup.
