Lenovo's ThinkPad P1 And ThinkPad P72 Deliver Coffee Lake Xeons And Quadro Graphics

Lenovo has trotted out a pair of new mobile workstations including the ThinkPad P1 and the ThinkPad P72 that are thinner and more portable than you might expect. Of these two workstations, the thinnest of them is the P1 and this workstation class machine is only 0.7-inches thick. The beefier ThinkPad P72 is still only an inch thick. Lenovo manages to cram serious workstation hardware inside the rigs and keep it cool with choices of 8th gen Intel Core processors and Xeon hardware inside the rigs. Workstations need lots of graphics muscle for some types of workloads and Lenovo accommodates this type of user with NVIDIA Quadro professional graphics options.

The P72 being the slightly thicker machine is still very portable as far as workstation class laptops go. Inside the machine is a larger 17.1-inch IPS screen that can be had in two native resolutions with the base screen offering 1920 x 1080 and 300 nits of brightness. The higher resolution offering is 3840 x 2160 with 400 nits of brightness. That higher resolution screen also supports 100% of the Adobe RGB space and 10-bit color depth. The 1920 x 1080 unit supports 72% of the NTSC color gamut.

Processor options include 8th gen Core and Xeon processors, but Lenovo is mum on exactly what parts will be available other than calling out Core i9 parts specifically. Discrete graphics options include up to an NVIDIA Quadro P5200 GPU and up to 128GB of DDR4 RAM. Intel Optane Memory at up to 16GB is available along with up to 6TB of storage. Lenovo didn't skimp on the connectivity options with a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports, three USB-A ports, and an HDMI 2.0 output. Ethernet is integrated and a Mini Display Port 1.4 output for external monitors. A smart card reader, SD card reader, and an audio combo port are featured along with WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0.

Power comes from a 99WHr battery and 230W external power supply. There are plenty of OS options including Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, Windows 10 Pro, Ubuntu Linux, and Red Hat Linux. Thin this workstation might be, but it is on the heavy side tipping the scales at 7.5 pounds. P72 buyers can get theirs later this month starting at $1,950.

The smaller, thinner, and lighter of the two workstations is the ThinkPad P1 with a 15.6-inch screen. It supports the same 8th gen Core and Xeon processors. Screen resolutions are the same as the P72 and graphics options include the NVIDIA Quadro P1000 and P2000 options. A total of 64GB of RAM can be configured and storage is up to 4TB via an M.2 NVMe SSD. This rig gets an IR camera inside for facial recognition and an HD resolution web camera. P1 buyers get the same connectivity options as the P72 offers. Since the P1 is the smaller and less power-hungry of the duo, it gets a smaller 80WHr battery and an external 135W power supply. The P1 will land at the end of the month starting at $1,800.
