BioWare Axes Mass Effect Andromeda Single Player Support And DLC

For fans of Mass Effect: Andromeda who bought the game only five short months ago, the end has been confirmed. The Mass Effect: Andromeda team has published a post on the official game website confirming that the single player story is over. Rumors circulated back in July that the story would be ended, and that rumor has now been confirmed. Fans of the franchise will undoubtedly be angry at this turn of events.

The Andromeda team wrote, "Our last update, 1.10, was the final update for Mass Effect: Andromeda. There are no planned future patches for single-player or in-game story content."

"Early in development, we decided to focus Mass Effect: Andromeda's story on the Pathfinder, the exploration of the Andromeda galaxy, and the conflict with the Archon. The game was designed to further expand on the Pathfinder’s journey through this new galaxy with story-based APEX multiplayer missions and we will continue to tell stories in the Andromeda Galaxy through our upcoming comics and novels, including the fate of the quarian ark."

The Mass Effect franchise has a long history of the single player story mode being extended with new content and updates well after launch. To have the single player story mode come to an end not even five months after launch (the game launched on March 21, 2017) will undoubtedly leave a bad taste in the mouths of gamers who laid out cash for the game and expected the traditional long support cycle. Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised at this turn of events; the single player story mode wasn't particularly well received.

If you liked the story and want to know what happens in the arc, there will be comics and novels coming that continue the story. If your preference was never for the single player story mode, the multiplayer aspect of the game will continue to receive ongoing support. The Andromeda team wrote, "In the coming weeks, our multiplayer team will provide details of their ongoing support and upcoming content, including new multiplayer missions, character kits, and what’s in store for N7 Day."

It's unclear at this point if Mass Effect will see a future installment, although fans of the franchise will certainly hope so. If that future installment does happen, we hope that the story mode is better thought out and the game is more fun that what we ended up with this time. At the end of the day, the real reason the story mode and single player was cancelled is likely because few gamers wanted to buy it.
