Alleged OnePlus 7T Leaks With HAL 9000 Style Rear Camera Pod

OnePlus 7
Barring a surprise, OnePlus is likely to dish up a new line of smartphones this fall, presumably the OnePlus 7T series. As such, the leaks have already started. One of them came all the way back in December, and as it turns out, that may have been an accurate photo of the OnePlus 7T after all. How so?

Well, let's start with the initial leak. Self-proclaimed "tech enthusiast" Ishan Agarwal had posted an image to Twitter that he said was of a OnePlus device in the prototype/designing stage. "It is not final but this is probably how the device may end up looking," Agarwal wrote at the time. Check it out...
Fast forward a little over eight months and notorious leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) dug up the old Twitter thread and posted sketches of a OnePlus handset that look awfully similar to the ones in the original photo. Have a look...

If OnePlus and HAL 9000 had a baby, this is what it might look like. We can see a large circular area positioned at the top of the phone, just above the logo on the rear of the handset. This would be the camera arrangement. Unfortunately, there are not any clues to specific camera details, only that it is a rather large area, hinting at multiple lenses.

As a point of reference, the existing OnePlus 7 mats a main 48-megapixel rear camera with an 8-megapixel telephoto lens and 16-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens (in addition to a 16-megapixel on the front of the phone). In our hands-on evaluation of the OnePlus 7, we came away impressed with the overall camera performance.

Regarding the possible OnePlus 7T design, it is certainly interesting. Smartphone makers have been paying a ton of attention to camera performance, more recently by adding more lenses to the mix. Apple, for example, is said to be going with a triple camera arrangement on its next iPhone, along with an LED flash, resulting in a large square-shaped bump on the back.

Personally, I think some of the leaked designs are trending towards being eyesores. It's a double-edged sword, though, because camera performance (at least for me) is a top concern when shopping for a smartphone.

What do you think about the OnePlus 7T schematic? Do you like the HAL 9000-esque design, or are you crossing your fingers for a smaller implementation in the final model? Drop us a comment to let us know!
