Plex Live TV Expands To Android And Apple TV Platforms
Using an existing antenna and tuner, you can watch local programs including sports and news all live and if you have a Plex Pass these features are free. Live TV and DVR are also now out of beta with Plex; that means support for Live TV is available on Apple TV, iOS, Android, and Android TV. While Android users can watch Live TV and record shows, but a tuner and Antenna will be required (for your Plex Server), just as it is on Apple TV.
Supported features on these devices include Time Shifting allowing you to pause, play, rewind, and fast forward content. Basically, you get all the same functions of your cable or satellite DVR minus the need to pay large monthly fees for the content. The updated Plex app allows users to watch their favorite programming on their own schedule. Getting started requires users to access their server via the Plex Web App by going to settings > server > Live TV & DVR.
While Plex focused on updates for Android and iOS platforms and mobiles first, other devices will be getting an update as well. Plex says that similar updates for Roku, Fire TV, smart TVs, and the Plex Web App are coming next. Back in June, Plex added free OTA broadcasts and DVR functionality for all Plex Pass subscribers.
In March, Plex announced that it would free users from having to run their own media servers by allowing the direct streaming from cloud storage services. That feature supported personal OneDrive accounts, Dropbox, and Google Drive accounts. During the beta period, Plex initially supported Amazon Drive. Plex dropped Amazon Drive support as of December 31, 2016.
"Unfortunately, the challenges with Amazon Drive have proven insurmountable at this time, so we have decided to remove Amazon Drive as a storage option for Plex Cloud for the foreseeable future," said Plex back in December.
