Porsche revealed its Taycan Turbo and Taycan Turbo S performance EVs early last month, and they are no doubt gorgeous, technology-laden track monsters. However, they are also prohibitively expensive. While the Tesla Model S Performance rings in at $99,990, the Turbo and Turbo S will set you back $152,000 and $186,000 respectively.

The German automaker has always said that it plans to extend the Taycan family downward and its first step in that journey comes with the Taycan 4S. The Taycan 4S still features all-wheel-drive thanks to its dual-motor setup, but it will generate a total of 429 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque with the 79.2 kWh Performance Battery. Horsepower swells to 522 horsepower when you engage launch mode.

There will also be an uprated Taycan 4S with a 92.3 kWh Performance Battery Plus, which is plucked from the Taycan Turbo/Taycan Turbo S. In this configuration, horsepower and torque figures are bumped to 482 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, or 563 horsepower with launch mode.

As for performance figures, the Taycan 4S with the lesser battery pack will hit 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, while the uprated battery does the deed in 3.5 seconds. Both will hit a top speed of 155 mph. Needless to say, the performance figures for both vehicles are more than adequate (to say the least) and will get you in a whole heap of [legal] trouble if you try extracting their full potential on public roads. Besides the downgraded engine specs, you’ll find the same basic components (like the 800-volt charging system) and available options that you’ll find on the Taycan Turbo/Turbo S.

The best thing, however, is that pricing takes a serious nosedive compared to its more performant siblings. The Porsche Taycan 4S will start at $105,150 with the Performance Battery and $111,730 with the Performance Battery Plus option. Both prices are still beyond the reach of most Americans, but it at least puts them closer in line with the Tesla Model S, even if they come up short on the “performance” side of the equation compared to that EV.
