Samsung Preps 49.9-inch Mega Wide 32:9 ‘Grand Circle’ Format Curved Display

Once you have experienced an ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio monitor, it can be hard going back to using a more traditional 16:9 aspect ratio display. That added horizontal real-estate comes in handy for multitasking. It can also be great for gaming, allowing for a wider field of view without investing in dual monitors. Now imagine what it would be like using a 32:9 aspect ratio display! It does not exist yet, but soon will thanks to Samsung.

Samsung has been teasing a 49-inch display with a 32:9 aspect ratio since the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year. In just a few months from now, it will actually begin mass producing the mega-wide panel, which will be accompanied by some new terms. One of them is Double Full HD (DFHD)—that refers to the monitor's 3840x1080 resolution.

The other term Samsung concocted has to do with the panel's 32:9 aspect ratio—Samsung refers to this as a "Grand Circle" format. Combined with an 1800R curvature, Samsung is shooting for a level of immersion that is above and beyond any other consumer PC monitor currently available.


Samsung's mega-wide display will have a 5,000:1 static contrast ratio, allowing for bright whites and deep blacks (most monitors have a 1,000:1 static contrast ratio). What is also interesting is that Samsung may end up billing its 49-inch monitor as a gaming display—it will have a fast 144Hz refresh rate with options for AMD FreeSynce and NVIDIA G-Sync support. The panel will also be based on VA technology, so the viewing angles should be pretty generous.

This is not the only big size panel Samsung is cooking up. It also has on tap a 44-inch display that will also feature its Grand Circle format, but with a 3840x1200 resolution. Like the 49-inch model, it will be based on VA technology, have a 5,000:1 contrast ratio, and an 1800R curvature. It will come in both 60Hz and 144Hz versions, depending on the vendor, and boast an 8-bit color depth.

In addition to these, Samsung is working on 40-inch panel with a Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) resolution. It too will have an 1800R curvature, along with 8-bit color depth and a 3,000:1 contrast ratio.
