Samsung won us over with its Galaxy Book Pro 360, a sleek and premium laptop built around Intel's Tiger Lake-H platform with an OLED display and exceptional battery life, to name just a couple of the highlights. Now it's adding three more models to the Galaxy Book family, with varying features and capabilities: Galaxy Book, Galaxy Book Odyssey, and Galaxy Book Pro 5G. Samsung Galaxy Book Odyssey With Discrete Graphics Shown above is the Galaxy Book Odyssey. It also features a Tiger Lake-H foundation with a Core i7-11600H processor underneath the hood, but instead of leaning on Intel's Xe graphics, it's infused with a low-power NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti mobile GPU for more graphics punch. Sure,... Read more...

We're not talking about a gigantic savings, mind you, but to be reduced before they even release to retail? Sure, we'll take it. There are also quite a few Samsung products on sale. Starting with Apple's latest stuff, you can score the MacBook Pro 14 for $1,949.99 at Amazon (save $50), or the MacBook Pro 16 for $2,649.99 at Amazon (save $50 as well). Feeling in a creative mood? Samsung is hoping to tap into that feeling by bringing its first bespoke experience to Galaxy devices, starting with the Galaxy Z Flip 3 Bespoke Edition. It's really a fancy way of saying buyers who are interested in Samsung's latest Flip series handset can customize the look with dozens of color combinations. "Today’s customers are multi-faceted, and we believe their technology should reflect their unique lifestyles," said Stephanie Choi, SVP & Head of Marketing of the Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. "Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition opens new experiences for customers to reflect who they are, through the technology they use the most."... Read more...
Hmm, do you think maybe Samsung and its retail partners (or at least Amazon) are savvy to Google's upcoming Pixel 6 event later today? It sure appears that way, given the timely and generous discount that's available on the recently launched Galaxy Z Flip 3. It's been reduced by $150 from its MSRP, hitting its lowest price yet. You can find the Galaxy Z Flip 3 on sale for $849.99 at Amazon (15% off, save $150). This is a factory unlocked model with 128GB of built-in storage. You also have a few different color options to choose from, including Phantom Black, Cream, and Green. No discounted Lavender option at the time of this writing, unfortunately, as it appears to be sold out (though you can... Read more...
Everyone who uses an Android phone has probably had some security-conscious acquaintance ask, "don't you know how much data your phone is harvesting?" Most of us shrug it off as one of the unavoidable circumstances of modern life: you want a smartphone, you deal with data harvesting. Still, some folks aren't so willing to make that sacrifice. A new collaborative study from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and Trinity College Dublin in Ireland tested Android-based phones from Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, and Realme as well as handsets running LineageOS and the open-source, privacy-focused /e/OS. The study found that "even when minimally configured and the handset is idle, the vendor-customized... Read more...
Samsung says it has begun mass producing what it claims is the industry's smallest DRAM based on extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology, on a 14-nanometer process. It had already begun shipping the first EUV DRAM earlier this year (back in March), and what it's kicking into high gear now represents an increase in the number of EUV layers. More specifically, Samsung says it increased the number of EUV layers to five, for what it says is the finest and most advanced DRAM process out there for emerging DDR5 memory solutions. And it arrives just as Intel is set to usher in the era of DDR5 in the consumer landscape, with the introduction of Alder Lake and its accompany Z690 platform. "Today, Samsung... Read more...
If you're looking to upgrade your PlayStation 5 with a fast SSD, Samsung's 980 Pro SSD is a suitable candidate. Even more so at the end of the month. That's because Samsung today announced it is equipping its speedy 980 Pro with a heastink that is specifically designed to fit inside the relatively tight confines of Sony's PS5 game console. "Ready for installation in a slim, PS5-compatible design, the 980 Pro with Heatsink enables gamers to easily expand storage on their console. This addition to the Samsung 980 Pro SSD family is delivered with a proprietary built-in heatsink with Samsung Advanced Heat Dissipation Technology," Samsung says. One of the perks of the PS5 is that Sony incorporated... Read more...
It is easy to take for granted that our premium-designed smartphones just work as expected, and won't fall apart like some cheap gadget picked up from the clearance bin at the local thrift shop. And for the most part, they do dutifully operate to expectations. It takes a lot of design chops and testing to achieve the kind of durability necessary for daily use, and providing a rare glimpse of what goes into the latter, Samsung has partially lifted the curtain to reveal some of its testing procedures. Companies don't often provide behind-the-scene looks at how the sausage is made. Or in this case, how it is deemed ready for public consumption. Samsung chose the perfect time to make an exception,... Read more...
Back in May, Samsung unveiled a high-tech gadget for data centers called the CXL Memory Expander, essentially a memory expansion device that utilizes the newer Compute Express Link interconnect standard. As with most hardware, however, the clever device is only as good as the software. To address that fact, Samsung has now introduced what it says is the industry's first open-source software solution that is specifically designed to support the CXL memory platform. The upshot of Samsung's CXL memory expander is it allows clients to scale memory capacities and bandwidth in data centers to terabyte levels, going well beyond what was previously possible. CXL itself is an open, industry-supported... Read more...
It’s been a mixed year for Samsung when it comes to smartphone sales. The company launched the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra in January 2021, but sales have been lackluster. According to research from Counterpoint Research, Galaxy S21 family sales were down 20 percent through its first six months compared to the Galaxy S20, making it the slowest-selling release since the Galaxy S5 in 2014. However, things are looking more positive for Samsung regarding its Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. These are Samsung’s third-generation folding smartphones, and early reports already indicated that the devices came charging out of the starting gate. Now, a new report from The... Read more...
Earlier this year, AMD confirmed that Samsung's next-generation Exynos mobile SoCs would incorporate its RDNA 2 graphics technology. At the time, AMD said that the RDNA 2 intellectual property leveraged by the new Exynos family would "[bring] ray tracing and variable rate shading capabilities to flagship mobile devices." Now, Samsung is delving a little deeper into the ray-tracing capabilities of the upcoming [alleged] Exynos 2200. The company posted comparison images to its Weibo page, which shows a game scene rendered with and without ray tracing enabled. With the shot taken from a device powered by an Exynos SoC, we see enhanced lighting effects with the flames under the tank and the building... Read more...
It took a few generations, but the folding smartphone form factor has come into its own and appears to be drawing greater interest. One could argue that it has achieved mainstream status. It just depends on if the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 sales momentum in Samsung's native land can carry over to other territories. These are fine handsets, even if they are not perfect. In our Galaxy Z Fold 3 review, we noted there is a visible crease down the center of the main display, which can either be a non-issue or somewhat distracting, depending on how it is being utilized, and the user. Battery life in our testing was only so-so, and it's an expensive phone. But otherwise, the form factor works... Read more...
Over the weekend, new renders leaked of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S22 Ultra flagship smartphone. The renders gave us our first look at a dramatic departure from the Galaxy S family with respect to design and showcased a look more akin to the stalled Galaxy Note series. Now, upcoming third-party cases presented by frequent gadget leaker Ice Universe seemingly confirm many of the design details seen in the earlier renders. For example, the cutout on the back of the case matches up with the odd-looking camera bump that could hold up to five cameras. We also see cutouts on the bottom of the phone for the USB-C port, speaker, and S Pen. While the current generation Galaxy S21 Ultra supports... Read more...
Samsung, like many high-profile tech companies, is desperate to obtain additional microchips from its suppliers. Unfortunately, the global chip shortage is putting the squeeze on Samsung’s ability to deliver high-end (and incredibly profitable) flagship smartphones to customers. With this in mind, the company is doing everything to bolster its chip supply, including sending mobile chief TM Roh to the United States to implore suppliers to boost output. However, even a company as big as Samsung, which has considerable political and financial might, couldn’t move the production needle, according to South Korean publication The Elec. Roh reportedly made two trips to the U.S. – one... Read more...
We've seen leaked renders of Samsung's Galaxy S21 Fan Edition (FE), and we've even peeked at the smartphone's user manual leak in full. However, according to a new report, the new value-packed device may never see an official public introduction. According to a Samsung official who spoke with the South Korean publication DDaily, the Galaxy S21 FE was initially scheduled for an online "Unpacked" event in October. However, that event is reportedly now canceled. In addition, the company official allegedly added, "We are revising the smartphone launch itself." There wasn't a given for why Samsung might cancel the Galaxy S21 FE, but the global chip shortage could be playing a significant factor here.... Read more...
Though we are still quite some time from the launch of any new flagship Galaxy smartphone, some leaks have sprung from the Samsung well. Earlier this week, we heard about the new Galaxy S22 Ultra and how it may take over the role of the Galaxy Note line. Now, we have some renders of this alleged new device, and it looks rather interesting. Akin to some previous Galaxy devices, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is slated to have plenty of storage and the latest Qualcomm processor, potentially the Snapdragon 898, which has been the subject of many rumors. Further, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is expected to feature a 6.8-inch curved AMOLED display, likely with a 120Hz refresh rate. With a screen that size, the... Read more...
Samsung just launched its Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic last month, but there is already a pretty hefty discount available on the former. The Galaxy Watch 4 is available in 40mm and 44mm sizes, but the smaller size sees the biggest discount (percentage-wise) today at Amazon. The Galaxy Watch 4 (40mm) has an MSRP of $249.99, but Amazon is currently selling the smartwatch for $229.99. That's a $20 discount, which is already excellent for a brand-new device. However, Amazon is also throwing in a free Samsung Wireless Charger Fast Charge Pad DUO. That device alone has a retail price of $59.99, so that makes the $229.99 combo offer (a total of 25 percent off) even hotter. The Wireless... Read more...
The Galaxy Note has been a popular smartphone line, offering users a Galaxy experience in an enlarged handset with S-Pen support. And save for the Galaxy Note 7, which was given a Viking funeral because of exploding batteries, they've been solid products. The Galaxy Note series may also cease to exist going forward, at least as you've come to know it (by name). Rumor has it Samsung will not launch another Galaxy Note handset, and instead will task its upcoming Galaxy S22 Ultra with filling that role. Galaxy Note fans pining for an updated model might be happy with that decision, if it comes to be, though there is at least some reason to maintain a bit of optimism—the S-Pen. The rumor comes... If there’s one thing that companies across various industries are asking for right now, it’s increased chip capacity so that they can ship more products out the door to customers. But, unfortunately, there’s a severe backlog when it comes to fab capacity. That means the current chip supply can’t keep up with demand for hardware like Radeon RX and GeForce RTX GPUs. And even automotive companies like Ford are forced to leave unfinished F-150 pickups sitting unfinished in lots due to a lack of chips (typically produced on older, mature process nodes) to power critical vehicle functions. The good news is that that IDC projects that the semiconductor marker could grow by just... Read more...
As we approach the closing quarter of 2021, numerous leaks concerning Samsung's future flagship devices are spilling out. On the smartphone side, we have the Galaxy S22. And for tablets, Samsung will soon introduce the Galaxy Tab S8 family. Galaxy S22 Family Rumors Galore Starting with the Galaxy S22, we already know that at least the international version of the smartphone will feature Samsung's Exynos 2200 SoC. We covered this SoC earlier this week, which features a single 2.9GHz Cortex-X2 prime core joined by three 2.8GHz high-performance cores and four 2.2GHz efficiency cores. In addition, it will also contain an AMD RDNA 2-based GPU clocked at 1.25GHz. Other features that are now rumored... Read more...
Earlier this year, Samsung Display gave us a status update on its efforts to develop high refresh rate OLED panels for the laptop market. Up until this point, OLED panels for notebooks have been stuck at 60Hz, while LCD panels have hit 144Hz, 240Hz, and beyond. This week, the South Korean electronics giant confirmed that its 90Hz laptop panels entered mass production for smoother on-screen action. Despite the perceived refresh rate deficit compared to a 120Hz LCD panel, Samsung Display says that the OLED panel will produce more natural-looking images, while blur length in videos is improved by 10 percent. In addition, the response time for the 90Hz panel is 10x faster than its 120Hz LCD counterparts,... Read more...
Earlier today, we brought you some sweet discounts on Samsung’s brand new Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. This afternoon, deals abound on much older hardware, but they represent excellent values for those currently in the market. Kicking things off is the OnePlus 8T. When we last visited the phone in early June, it was already available at a discounted price of $549 direct from OnePlus. Today, the phone is discounted even further at OnePlus, falling to just $499 with free shipping. OnePlus 8T 12GB/256GB Unlocked $499 @ OnePlus That price gets you a powerful smartphone powered by a Snapdragon 865 SoC paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Your primary point of interaction... Read more...
