Since August, there have been rumblings of the next Samsung Galaxy device in the works. Previously, we heard of the S-Pen making its way to the next high-end Galaxy "S" phones, and then Samsung began mass production of 16Gb LPDDR5 memory for the new phones. Now, Steve Hemmerstoffer, also known as @OnLeaks on Twitter, has shown off what appears to be Galaxy S21 renders. Looking at the device, the change that stands out the most, as Hemmerstoffer points out, is the “unique rear camera housing design.” Rather than having the camera bump inset from the frame, it wraps around the device and melds into it along the side for a smoother finish. Furthermore, rather than the square-ish camera... Read more...
Samsung has just unleashed a new family of Secure Digital (SD) cards aimed squarely at photography professionals, general consumers and the scores of content creators out there entertaining the masses. The new SD cards are available in two product families: PRO Plus and EVO Plus. Both product families use the SDHC/SDXC form-factor with a UHS-1 interface. In the case of the PRO Plus, Samsung is promising sequential read speeds of up to 100MB/sec and sequential write speeds of up to 90MB/sec. The entry-level 32GB version of the PRO Plus, however, is limited to 60MB/sec sequential writes. As for the EVO Plus, Samsung rates all members of this family at up to 100MB/sec for both sequential reads and... Read more...
Samsung has taken the wraps off what it is calling “the most affordable 5G smartphone to date.” The Galaxy A42 5G will pack some of the Samsung features consumers know and love alongside the 5G connectivity. It will launch in the United Kingdom, starting at £349 RRP or around $455. As Samsung puts it, the Galaxy A42 5G strengthens the A-Series lineup. James Kitto, VP of Sales for Samsung U.K. and Ireland, says that, “We’re excited to bring to market our latest 5G smartphone within the A-Series lineup,” and that “it is part of our ongoing commitment to deliver next-generation connectivity to more people.” This budget beast of a phone will come with... If you're looking for a large amount of relatively fast SSD storage without spending too much money, we've got a great deal to start off your Monday morning. Amazon is currently offering the Samsung SSD 870 in a 2TB capacity for just $199.99, which represents a 20 percent discount ($50 off) compared its regular price. We reviewed this same SSD back in June and came away impressed with its performance compared to its rivals, along with the reputation that comes with the Samsung name. At this new, lower price, the 2TB 870 QVO is now an even better value that makes it an even more attractive option for enthusiasts that might want to use it as a secondary drive. The 870 QVO uses the SATA... Read more...
Up until now, Google Fi customers who wanted to use a Samsung phone with the service had to purchase an unlocked model elsewhere. And that is certainly still an option. However, Google has now expanded the range of compatible Google Fi phones it sells to customers, to include half a dozen 5G Samsung Galaxy handsets. They include the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G as shown above, along with the Galaxy Note 20 5G, Galaxy S20 5G, Galaxy Note S20+ 5G, Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, and Galaxy A71 5G. In addition, Google added a couple of its own phones to the mix, specifically the recently announced Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G. And of course you can still use any unlocked phone that is compatible with T-Mobile's 5G network,... Read more...
Samsung's line of Galaxy handsets hardly need an introduction. By now, even casual smartphone shoppers are familiar with the Galaxy brand, which spans top-of-the-line flagships like the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy S20, to much more affordable options like the Galaxy A and Galaxy 5G. And of course there is the innovative Galaxy Z Fold 2. But one Galaxy handset you may not have heard of before is the Galaxy XCover Pro. So, what exactly is it? The Galaxy XCover Pro is a bit of a different beast in the Galaxy family, designed specifically for working environments and job sites, including healthcare settings, manufacturing facilities, retail shops, and so forth. That's to say, the Galaxy XCover Pro... Read more...
Samsung is going rugged with the new Galaxy Tab Active3. This device is built for harsh environments and those who work in them, such as first responders, soldiers, and more. The design's focus was taking the Galaxy Tab Active2 up a notch by improving productivity and portability capabilities. The Galaxy Tab Active3 is built to be tough. It has acquired a MIL-STD-810H certification, meaning it can handle quite a lot of punishment. According to Samsung, the device has “shock absorption [that] is now able to withstand drops of up to 1.5 meters with an inbox protective cover.” Furthermore, it has an IP68 dust and water resistance rating so you can have “peace of mind when working... We have all heard the tantalizing promises of 5G connectivity—faster speeds, lower latency, and a new era of experiences made possible by its benefits over 4G and earlier standards, if you have a 5G phone or other device. The problem is that those benefits do not necessarily reach their full potential indoors. That is where Samsung's new Link Cell technology comes into play. When it comes to 5G connectivity, millimeter Wave (or mmWave) is where it is at, for the fastest performance. It is the high band solution with the best speeds, but it has some downsides. It does not extend as far out from cell towers as mid-band and low-band 5G solutions, and can have issues penetrating buildings and... Read more...
Yesterday, Samsung officially announced the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition (FE), which offers compelling specs at an attractive $699 price point. However, just a day after the phone was announced, retailers are already piling on the discounts, which makes an already attractive phone even tastier for those wanting flagship Android performance. Both Amazon and Best Buy currently have the Galaxy S20 FE available for preorder, unlocked, for just $599. That represents a $100 discount off yesterday’s announced MSRP. So you’re getting a flagship-worthy smartphone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC with 5G for not much more than a nice mid-range Android smartphone. For instance, the mid-range Google... After months of leaks, the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition (FE) is now official. Samsung announced the smartphone this morning, and it brings over many of the flagship features that originally debuted in the mainline Galaxy S20 family to a lower price point. At the heart of the Galaxy S20 FE is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC, and not the newer Snapdragon 865+ for obvious reasons (namely cost). You’ll get a respectable 6GB of RAM onboard along with 128GB of internal storage and expandable storage via a microSD slot. When it comes to the display, Samsung is giving customers a 6.5-inch FHD panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, which is great considering the price. That’s something that the company... Read more...
We first caught a glimpse of the Samsung SSD 980 Pro all the way back at CES in early January. The highly-anticipated drive was tucked away in a display case in Samsung’s massive booth on the show floor, but other than the branding, some early claimed performance data, and the fact that drive had a native PCIe 4.0 interface, details were scant. All that changes today, though. We’ve gotten our hands on a couple of shiny, new Samsung SSD 980 Pro drives – in 250GB and 1TB flavors – and are finally able to give you the full scoop. The Samsung SSD 980 Pro series of solid state drives not only support the PCI Express 4.0 interface, but they are outfitted with a completely new... Read more...
Samsung has not yet announced its Galaxy S20 Fan Edition (FE) handset, but it has already been spied in a new leak, which gives a high level overview of the phone. Two leaks, actually—one of them is a hands-on video showcasing the upcoming phone, and the other is purportedly an unreleased promotional video (or a pretty good fake). As far as we know, this is the first look at the actual phone. Before now, we have seen some renders of the Galaxy S20 FE, which leaked to the web in August. Here is a look at the hands-on video (it's a little over 6 minutes long)... The leaker who posted the above video, Jimmy is Promo, has also gotten his mitts on previous Samsung phones before they launched.... Read more...
When it comes to mobile SoCs for Android smartphones, there's Qualcomm, and then there's everybody else. Sure, there have been some challenges from the like of HiSilicon, MediaTek and Samsung, but Qualcomm has for the most part held the performance/features edge with its broad Snapdragon portfolio. Samsung, however, is looking to change that with its next-generation Exynos SoCs, especially when it comes to its flagship offerings. The South Korean electronics giant is reportedly working on a high-end chip codenamed Olympus according to the Yonhap News Agency, which would offer a significant boost in performance compared to existing Exynos chips. More importantly, it is expected... Read more...
Huawei holds the second largest share of the global smartphone market, according to the most recent data culled by IDC, but the Chinese handset maker finds itself in yet another tough spot. Barring an extension at the final hour, it is very likely both Samsung and LG will stop supplying smartphone displays to Huawei next week. Samsung and LG are pretty much the go-to companies for premium panels in the mobile space—we have been particularly enamored with the overall display quality of Samsung's higher end Galaxy phones that rock OLED screens. But if Huawei has to look elsewhere for smartphone panels, it could face multiple challenges. Why is this happening? It relates to ongoing tensions... Read more...
The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra have barely been on the market for a month, and they're already being deeply discounted. We can't say that it's due to poor sales in particular this early in the game, but these discounts tend to be the case for most Samsung smartphones shortly after launch since the same happened with the Galaxy S20 family. In this case, Amazon is knocking $200 off the price of the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, which means that they now start at $799 and $1,099 respectively. Both smartphones are packing flagship-caliber features to justify their high price tags, but we can’t help but feel that this lower price point is more in... Read more...
Well, that was fast. Samsung only launched its latest generation Galaxy Watch 3 barely a month ago, and already it can be had for a deep discount. It is on sale for $365.30 on Amazon, which is 15 percent (or $64.69) below its regular $429.99 selling price. Typically it takes a longer time to see these kinds of markdowns on new products. There is a lot to like about the Galaxy Watch 3. It is the latest in Samsung's line of premium smartwatches, running on Tizen. This latest iteration boasts a slimmer rotating bezel (used for navigation), and is made with premium materials, like a stainless steel case. The version that is on sale is the 45mm model (Wi-Fi) in the 'Mystic Black' color option. Samsung... Read more...
Bop it, twist it, fold it? Among the trends of folding phones, Samsung could be entering the folding phone foray once more. New rumors are floating about that Samsung has a “3rd foldable family member” in the chamber next year as the Z Fold S with a flexible OLED screen and a 360-degree hinge. Back in August, we reported on a possible budget line of folding phones from Samsung, but now it seems some new rumors are afoot. Twitter user @folduniverse dug into the rumors of this new folding phone from Samsung in his tweet below. Samsung rumored to have a 3rd foldable family member next year, tentatively known as Z Fold S.It has got 360° hinge that enables outfold and infold and works... Read more...
Back in early August at Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung unveiled two fresh new Android tablets: the Galaxy Tab S7 and the Galaxy Tab S7+. We’ve managed to get our hands on the latter of those two, which is a fantastic piece of hardware, and probably the best Android tablet has come across our workbench over the years. As you can see in our hands-on video below, the Galaxy Tab S7 is a premium device and is dominated by a large, gorgeous 12.4-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2800x1752 (WQXGA+) and a fast 120Hz refresh rate. Powering the tablet is Qualcomm’s latest flagship SoC: the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+. The inclusion of the Snapdragon 865+ also means that that Galaxy... Read more...
Windows 10 on Arm is starting to gain more traction, thanks to a bevy of new systems based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8cx high-performance mobile SoC, and its second-gen follow-on which was just announced. Those laptops have all been defined by two common traits: exceptional battery life with still a few lingering app compatibility issues. Some app developers have been reticent to get on board the Arm-64 express and Microsoft is yet to enable emulation for 64-bit x86 applications, which limits overall compatibility. However, when an app does have a native Arm binary performance is solid, and the system's battery life can literally last for days. Though it's taking time, the always-on always-connected... As Samsung states, “Mobile devices and computers have become lifelines.” Connectivity is necessary in the world we live in, and the new 5G capability of the Galaxy Book Flex 5G looks to fill the need. Along with 5G, the Galaxy Book Flex 5G will also have WiFi-6 and an Intel 11th Gen Tiger Lake CPU, making it a versatile yet powerful device for on the go and at home use. The 5G capability is not the only major feature this new device packs, however. Going inside the laptop, the horsepower will come from a new 11th Gen Intel Core processor (up to Core i7) with Iris Xe graphics. This horsepower, combined with the battery power, instant wake feature, and responsiveness of the device make... Read more...

Samsung is keeping its foot firmly pressed on the gas pedal by entering into mass production of its third-generation 16-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR5 memory chips for mobile devices, like its upcoming Galaxy S21 handset. Leveraging its most advanced process node (dubbed 1z), this is the first version of 16Gb LPDDR5 to be mass produced using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. "The 1z-based 16Gb LPDDR5 elevates the industry to a new threshold, overcoming a major developmental hurdle in DRAM scaling at advanced nodes," said Jung-bae Lee, executive vice president of DRAM Product and Technology at Samsung Electronics. "We will continue to expand our premium DRAM lineup and exceed customer demands, as we... Read more...
