Samsung Display TV Ad Allegedly Outs First Glimpse Of Galaxy S8

Samsung Galaxy S8

Samsung has not yet announced its Galaxy S8 handset, though it may have given the public a sneak peek of the forthcoming device in a new television advertisement for the company's display division. The Korean-language ad seems to be highlighting features of Samsung's AMOLED display, but the handset that is used in the commercial shares some traits that have been leaked about the Galaxy S8 in recent weeks.

One of them is the lack of a home button. It has been rumored that Samsung is nixing the home button from the Galaxy S8 (and Galaxy S8 Edge), and it just so happens that the mysterious phone featured in the ad does not have one either. That in itself is not proof of the device being a Galaxy S8, but it is an interesting coincidence if nothing else.

There has also been chatter of the Galaxy S8 having thin bezels or virtually no bezel. Certainly that is the case here, with the smartphone in the display ad featuring an edge-to-edge display, or close to it anyway. The ad also shows that the volume rocker sits on the left-side of the handset, same as the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, while the power button takes up residence on the right side.

One of the rumors floating around is that Samsung will not offer a flat-display version of the Galaxy S8, choosing instead to go with just a Galaxy S8 Edge version that wraps the display around both sides. The phone featured in Samsung's display ad is definitely a flat screen model, which could indicate that Samsung changed its mind or never intended to roll solo with a wraparound display in the first place. Or it could mean that the phone in the ad is just a generic model.

Whether the phone in the ad is the Galaxy S8 or not, Samsung has lofty expectations of it selling well. Looking to recover from the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, Samsung expects to sell 60 million Galaxy S8 handsets during its lifecycle. That is a tough target to hit, though not impossible—Samsung's best selling flagship, the Galaxy S4, sold 70 million units. However, competition was different back then. The Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S6 topped out at around 45 million units each, while the Galaxy S7 series has sold around 48 million units so far.
