Samsung Readies 20MP Camera With Optical Image Stabilization For Galaxy S6

You never know what gems lay hidden in odd corners of the web. To wit, in a fairly boring article by Korea's Economic Times concerning itself with Samsung's component business operations, and in particular its "Samsung Electro-Mechanics" (SEM) sector, it's revealed that the forthcoming Galaxy S6 will sport a 20-megapixel camera.

As it relates to the article, camera modules will play a role in boosting Samsung's Opto and Mechatronics Solutions (OMS) division, which performed poorly last year due to the lower operating ratio of camera modules. Pretty ho-hum stuff, except the report notes that the proportion of high value added products like the 20MP sensor with optical image stabilization will lead to sales growth and profitability this quarter.

Here's the other piece of relevant information -- the report also says that the Galaxy S6 will release "2-3 weeks earlier than originally planned." So to summarize, Samsung's SEM sector is working on a more profitable 20MP camera that's expected to boost the company's Q1 performance, and the Galaxy S6 is releasing weeks ahead of schedule.

Put the two together and it seems logical to assume that the Galaxy S6 will sport a 20MP camera, representing an upgrade over the 16MP camera found on the Galaxy S5. It would also appear that the Galaxy S6 will launch in early March -- likely at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

In related news, it's rumored that LG will also use a 20MP shooter in its forthcoming G4 handset; though it was recently reported that LG won't be unveiling the device at MWC as it wants to "spend more time perfecting the new phone."
