Sony Goes Retro With PlayStation Classic Mini Console, Here's Where To Pre-order

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Sony is flattering the heck out of Nintendo. Back in 2016, Nintendo first rolled out its NES Classic Edition console that was plug and play with more than two dozen classic games packed inside. Sony is now getting in on the classic console action with the PlayStation Classic landing December 3.

That will put this retro console on the market just in time for holiday shopping and with a $99.99 price, it will certainly be appealing to gamers. Sony notes that it has been nearly 25 years since that original PlayStation landed, with it eventually becoming the first game console in history to ship 100 million units globally. Any gamer around back then will remember how great games on the console looked compared to other consoles available at the time.

The PlayStation Classic is much smaller than the original console -- it is 45% smaller while maintaining the look and feel of the original. The 20 pre-loaded games included out of the box are some of the most popular games for the console including Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. It ships with a pair of controllers that are like those of the original console, although one glaring controller omission is a lack of analog control sticks.

Sony notes that all of the pre-loaded games will be playable in their original formats. Nintendo did that same thing going so far as to have a filter that made the games look as if they were played on an old CRT TV. Sony's PlayStation Classic is available for pre-order at select retailers across the U.S. and Canada at $99.99 U.S. and $129.99 Canadian. That price includes an HDMI cable, two controllers, and a USB cable. The USB cable appears to be for power to the console; an AC adapter is sold separately. The full line of games coming to the console will be announced later. Preorders are underway at Gamestop and Best Buy.
