Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact Prototype Leaks Ahead Of MWC 2018

Believe it or not, big ol' honking smartphones do not appeal to everyone. It is part of the reason why it took Apple so long to finally build bigger iPhone models, and to cater to folks who prefer a smaller handset, companies such as Sony continue to offer compact cellular devices. As it pertains to Sony, the company is getting ready to release a successor to its Xperia XZ1 Compact, as evidenced by an Xperia XZ2 Compact prototype that recently made an appearance.

Over at the Xperia Blog, a reader posted images of the Xperia XZ2 Compact prototype, giving an early look at a phone that Sony is expected to unveil at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 later this month. Since the pictures are of a prototype product, the final version may differ, so keep that in mind.


That being said. the prototype phone looks to be roughly the same size as Sony's Xperia Z5 Compact. The newer handset looks distinctly different though, with a curved backside instead of a flat rectangular body. As such, it sits a little higher when placing the two phones side-by-side, with the displays facing upward.

We only get a side view of the new handset. However, the person who posted the images claims that the Xperia XZ2 Compact does not have a 3.5mm audio jack. While not too surprising, we can't say we like the newer trend of ditching the 3.5mm audio jack, which for many folks means having to use an adapter or buying a new set of earphones. In case you were wondering, the Xperia XZ1 Compact sports a 3.5mm audio jack on the top side.
The leaker also says there is a fingerprint scanner located on the backside of the phone, though that is not depicted either. And because it bears repeating, the prototype may or may not represent the final design—we won't know until MWC, presumably.
