Spotify Opens a Whole New World with Apps

Spotify officially has its game face on. The spunky streaming service that seemingly took forever to land on U.S. shores is not only here (that's old news now), but it now has apps! The new Spotify Platform gives third party developers the chance to build creative and awesome music-based apps, propelling Spotify up a level in the process.

"The apps you'll discover over the next few days are only the beginning. We'll surprise you, and probably be surprised ourselves, with many more new and wonderful experiences that will make Spotify even better," the Spotify team said in a blog post.

To access apps, just direct your attention to the left sidebar to where it says -- *drumroll* -- Apps. Click on it to bring up the App Finder and start exploring new ways of interacting with Spotify. At current, there are 16 partner apps, with 12 available from launch today.

"Once you take a look, you’ll see why we believe this is truly the beginning of something game-changing for digital music," Spotify CEO and Founder Daniel Ek said in a statement. "We think this will lead to integrations that keep Spotify beautiful and simple, but layer in great musical experiences designed to be social and fun. It’s what our users have been asking us for."

App development is open to anyone with a little know-how, time, and desire, which means we could potentially see some very cool things in the coming weeks and months.
