Tesla’s Elon Musk Promises To Solve Model S Range Anxiety With OTA Software Update

The last time Tesla released a major over-the-air (OTA) update for its Model S electric sedan, it improved upon the already stellar “Insane Mode” found on the dual-motor P85D. But Tesla CEO Elon Musk has something even more promising in store with a new OTA update that will be available to all Model S owners.

Musk sent out the following tweet to his followers early this morning:

With TSLA stock taking a serious beating in recent months, there’s no question that Musk is looking to help restore some confidence in the company and this just may be the ticket. Although we seriously doubt that Tesla (or any electric vehicle manufacturer for that matter) can truly “end range anxiety” anytime soon, an OTA update that will allow Model S owners to travel a few more miles per charge would welcome news. The Model S family currently has a driving range of up to 295 miles per charge (85D).

The news is even more impressive considering that this range boost will take place via a free software update that won’t even require the customer to take their vehicle in for service. That’s not something that we can often say about traditional vehicles with internal combustion engines with regards to increased performance and fuel economy.
