Highly Acclaimed The Last Guardian Finally Arrives For PlayStation 4 Today

The Last Guardian

There is a word for games that have been in development for more than a decade and delayed across platforms. It's called vaporware, or at least that's the usually the case. But in remarkable defiance of the odds, the really long awaited adventure The Last Guardian has finally emerged for the PlayStation 4, putting an end to a decade of patience.

The Last Guardian is a followup Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, a pair of classics released to the PlayStation 2 forever ago. Ideas for the title were being kicked around in 2005, followed by active development in 2007. The plan was to finish the game in a relatively short period and release it to the PlayStation 3, but technical difficulties followed by the departure of designer and director Fumito Ueda along with other team members nearly derailed the project for good.

Instead, Ueda and the new game studio he started called genDESIGN came to an arrangement in which he would help Sony complete the title. Ueda and his team, which included the lead programmer for Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, handled things like level design and character creation, which Sony's Japan Studio would then implement while overseeing the project as a whole.

This arrangement worked and rather than vanish into vaporware, The Last Guardian managed to become a complete project. And not only that, the result is garnering high praise on the Internet. A look at some of the early reviews shows mostly positive remarks about the game. This isn't a case of Duke Nukem Forever where the wait was only worth it for hardcore apologetic fans.

The Last Guardian is about an old man having a flashback of when he was a young boy meeting a feathered creature named Trico. It's an action-adventure game with puzzles to solve. The player controls the boy, who is able to mount and ride Trico, somewhat reminiscent of Bastian and Falkor the Luckdragon in The NeverEnding Story.
