This Is How Samsung Will Fix The Galaxy Fold's Display Woes

Galaxy Fold
The Samsung Galaxy Fold was a highly anticipated first step into the world of folding smartphones, but its initial launch was abruptly canceled after reviewers one-after-another reported problems with the smartphones’ displays. From debris that was lodged under the panel itself, to the protective display cover being ripped off, the Galaxy Fold was clearly not ready for primetime.

Late last month, Samsung issued the following statement regarding issues that it found during its own internal investigation:

Initial findings from the inspection of reported issues on the display showed that they could be associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge. There was also an instance where substances found inside the device affected the display performance.

We will take measures to strengthen the display protection. We will also enhance the guidance on care and use of the display including the protective layer so that our customers get the most out of their Galaxy Fold.

At this time, Samsung is still committed to releasing the Galaxy Fold, and the South Korean publication Yonhap News Agency has highlighted what changes the company is making before the smartphones are shipped to customers. The first change comes to the protective laminate display cover that is attached to the display. Some reviewers thought that this was just a protective film that was in place during shipping and attempted to pull it off. Unfortunately, it's an integral part of the display and peeling it caused irreparable damage to the display.

Samsung will reportedly enlarge the protective cover and tuck it under so that it cannot be easily removed. With no visible seams, customers will also be less inclined to pull the film off out of habit.

The second change will come with the actual hinge mechanism. Some specs of dirt or dust managed to work its way through the hinge on The Verge's review unit and found its way under the display; this led to it prematurely failing. A revised design will reduce the amount of exposed area in the hinge to prevent debris from entering and causing display damage.

At this time, there is no new release date for the Galaxy Fold, but Samsung informed customers via email earlier this month that their preorders would be canceled if they didn't confirm them by May 31st.
