Toyota And Microsoft Partner Up To Improve In-Car Technology

And the automotive hits just keep on coming. As technology finds its way deeper and deeper into the automotive realm, it's becoming harder and harder to ignore. The fact of the matter is that technology is now an integral part of the automotive space, and even low-end vehicles have some level of technological integration to make 'em stand out. Microsoft's SYNC system has already taken Ford by storm, while Chevy has an expanding OnStar system. So what about Toyota? Turn to Microsoft, of course!

The companies this week announced that they'd be pouring around $12 million into Toyota Media Service Co., a TMC subsidiary that will offer "digital information services to Toyota users." The overriding plan is to build a global platform for TMC’s next-generation telematics services using the Windows Azure platform. Telematics is the fusing of telecommunications and information technologies in vehicles; it can encompass GPS systems, energy management and other multimedia technologies. The two companies aim to help develop and deploy telematics applications on the Windows Azure platform, which includes Windows Azure and Microsoft SQL Azure, starting with TMC’s electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2012. TMC’s goal is to establish a complete global cloud platform by 2015 that will provide affordable and advanced telematics services to Toyota automotive customers around the world.

Right now, tests are ongoing in Japan, but no specific details are being given as to when this new partnership will grow consumable fruit. Hopefully sooner rather than later; our cassette deck just can't make it much longer.
