White House Outlines Twitter, Facebook POTUS Handoff For Incoming Trump Or Clinton Presidency
How do you pass on a social media account to another user? The White House recently released its plan to preserve President Obama’s social media contributions, while still giving their hand-me-down social media accounts to the next president of the United States.
First, the president’s Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr, and YouTube accounts will all be passed along to the 45th president on January 20th, 2017. These accounts will retain their number of followers, but will otherwise start off as a blank slate. President Obama’s White House content will be preserved and made available through the National Archive and Record Administration (NARA). He will remain active on social media through usernames that will end in “44” since he is the 44th president. All of President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama’s social media content will preserved and available like other presidential records.
President Obama’s WhiteHouse.gov will be preserved on the web and frozen after January 20th in a similar manner to his predecessors, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. The incoming president will receive the WhiteHouse.gov domain while President Obama’s content will be moved to ObamaWhiteHouse.gov.
President Obama is the first “social media president”. He was the first to have a Twitter account, go live on Facebook, answer questions through YouTube, and use a Snapchat filter. His administration also revamped the WhiteHouse.gov website with a blog and email list. The White House sent out nearly 37,000 tweets since joining the website.
NARA is struggling to come up with ideas to preserve all of the social media material. It is welcoming ideas from the public and are interested in “Twitter bots and art projects to printed books and query tools”.
