Back in June, a leak hinted that there would be new flavors of Windows 10 aimed specifically at workstation PCs. Fast forward a couple months and Microsoft has now officially announced Windows 10 Pro for Workstations and it is designed specifically to support server-grade PC hardware.

Microsoft's Klaus Diaconu, Partner Group Program manager, Windows & Devices Group, wrote, "Today we are very excited to announce a new edition of Windows 10 Pro designed to meet the needs of our advanced users deploying their Workstation PCs in demanding and mission-critical scenarios. Windows 10 Pro for Workstations will be delivered as part of our Fall Creators Update, available this fall."

The OS will offer ReFS (resilient file system), which includes cloud-grade resiliency on data fault-tolerant storage spaces and make it easier to manage very large volumes. The file system is designed from the ground up to be resilient to data corruption, optimized for large data volumes, and auto-correcting among other things.

Windows 10 Pro for Workstations will also provide support for non-volatile memory modules (NVDIMM-N), enabling users to read and write files as quickly as possible. The OS supports faster file sharing with a feature dubbed SMB Direct, supporting network adapters with Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) capability. That type of network adapter allows function at full speed with low latency with little CPU resources consumed.

Perhaps the biggest feature of Windows 10 Pro for Workstations is expanded hardware support. The OS supports Intel Xeon or AMD Opteron processors with up to four CPUs inside a single machine. Previously, only two CPUs were supported. Up to 6TB of RAM are supported compared to the 2TB supported now.

Diaconu continues, "Performance is a very important requirement in this new world of fast paced innovation and we will continue to invest on Windows 10 Pro for Workstations to enable Windows power users to maximize every aspect of their high-performance device. Windows 10 Pro for Workstations utilizes significant investments, that Windows has made in recent releases, for scaling up across a high number of logical processors and large amounts of memory."
