Zuckerberg Promises More Local News In Your Facebook News Feed

Facebook and its CEO Mark Zuckerberg have been working hard to make some big changes to the way the social network operates. Facebook has promised to rethink the news feed users see and prioritize interactions with friends and family over news. Facebook has also made changes that will allow users to choose what news sources they trust, while ones that are untrustworthy will be purged. Zuckerberg has taken to the social network once again to talk about the next step in the revamping of the site. 

The new change will be to promote news from local sources. Zuckerberg wrote, "People consistently tell us they want to see more local news on Facebook. Local news helps us understand the issues that matter in our communities and affect our lives. Research suggests that reading local news is directly correlated with civic engagement. People who know what's happening around them are more likely to get involved and help make a difference."

Zuckerberg says that in his travels, people told him that if users could get past divisive national issues and focus on local issues more change could be made to communities. Zuckerberg wrote, "Starting today, we're going to show more stories from news sources in your local town or city. If you follow a local publisher or if someone shares a local story, it may show up higher in News Feed. We're starting this first in the US, and our goal is to expand to more countries this year."

Zuckerberg notes that the news from local sources will show up higher in your news feed and is part of the big push to make the time people spend on the network more valuable.
