Dell XPS 15 2-In-1: Gaming And Graphics Testing

Futuremark’s well-known 3DMark benchmark suite features tests that target a wide array of computing devices.

We opted for the Cloud Gate and Sky Diver tests, for which we have plenty of comparison data, but also as light-duty 3D graphics and gaming benchmarks that are well-suited to thin and light laptops. Sky Diver is a bit more strenuous, but still well within the limits of our test group.

The Radeon RX Vega M GPU integrated onto the Core i7-8705G clearly outpaced all of the other platforms here. The discrete NVIDIA GeForce MX150 in the Acer Swift 3 comes the closest to catching the XPS 15 2-In-1, but we use the term "closest" loosely. The Acer machine still finished over 7,000 points behind and was completely blown out of the water by the XPS 15 2-In-1.

We saw more of the same in the Sky Diver benchmarks. Once again the XPS 15 2-In-1 comes out on top by a wide margin. None of the integrated, on-processor graphics solutions come close to the XPS 15 2-In-1, including the Vega 8 core in the Ryzen 5 2500U.

GRID Autosport is a cross-platform racing simulation developed by Codemasters. After the luke-warm reception of GRID 2, due to its less than realistic racing model, the Codemasters team set out to improve GRID Autosport's handling and environment rendering to make it feel like more of a true racing simulator. The game is based on Codemasters' EGO engine that has an amped-up physics and damage system that adds to the immersion and realism. Codemasters also tuned its graphics engine to perform well over a wide variety of mainstream systems, so it makes for a good watermark in a medium-duty graphics workload. It also happens to be billed as "optimized for integrated Intel HD Graphics", which is something you don't see everyday.

The XPS 15 2-In-1 pulls off another clear victory in the GRID benchmark, but the Acer Swift 3 with NVIDIA GeForce MX150 closed the gap somewhat. Of note, the Radeon RX Vega M GPU in the XPS 15 2-In-1 was able to muster 90+ FPS in this game at 1080P with high image quality settings -- that's plenty fast and fluid for a racing game of this type. For somewhat older games, even if they are graphically intense, the Radeon RX Vega M provides plenty of oomph.
