Next Generation Gaming Performance Analysis - A Doom 3 and Counter Strike Source Drag Race

Doom 3 Benchmarks - Site3 Map Custom Demo

The "Site3" map generated custom demo run we created is a "classical" Doom 3 experience.  That is to say there is lots of action and some fairly impressive lighting in much of the demo.  In addition, we used the "give all" console command to throw every weapon and the kitchen sink at the myriad of demons we encountered.  It was all in good fun and it worked our graphics hardware fairly rigorously.

Head to head at the gates of hell

Here we see a somewhat different picture of performance.  The GeForce 6800 Ultra still holds a commanding lead but by not nearly as much as we saw in the multiplayer demo previously.  In fact, where the Radeon X800 XT PE fell behind by as much as 35 - 50% on our "Frag2" demo, here it only drops back by about 25% under worst case conditions with AA and Aniso enabled.

Here again, the spread between these two top end cards isn't as dramatic as in our multiplayer demo run, with the GeForce 6800 Ultra chalking up a 28% lead in the high end test.  Perhaps, since the action is actually a bit more thick, with more characters on the screen in this demo than in the multiplayer demo we ran, the Radeon X800 XT's strong vertex engines are able to give it more punch, than when lighting effects are a more predominant bottleneck, as seems to be the case in our "HH_Frag2" demo.
