Lenovo expanded its ThinkPad line this week with the ThinkPad P Series of mobile workstations. The new line will include Lenovo’s highest-performing ThinkPad mobile workstations, edging the ThinkPad W series out of that spot. When you think about what constitutes a "mobile workstation," several things come to mind. Things like ISV certification, long battery life, professional graphics (NVIDIA Quadro or AMD FirePro), and sometimes a rugged design. But what about the processor? Intel's Xeon chips have been powering workstations for a long time, and for the first time, Intel will offer Xeon processor options for laptops. Intel has refreshed its line-up of processors in a number of categories over the last few months. Late last year, Intel’s current flagship desktop processors based on Haswell-E arrived, followed shortly thereafter by the low-power Core M series for ultra-mobile devices, and then 5th Generation Core processors for notebooks and all-in-ones. Intel's aiming to bring big core performance and intelligence in a microserver form factor with its new Xeon D family of processors, the company's first ever Xeon-based System-on-Chip (SoC). That sound you hear may be ARM's pulse skipping a beat, as Intel jams a mighty intimidating wrench into the rival chip maker's plans to dominate the microserver market. The folks at BOXX are no strangers to crafting some of the world's most advanced workstation PCs, but its latest APEXX 5 still somehow manages to kick things up a notch. This might be a good time to rest your fist under your jaw, because your salivary glands might get overly excited. The DDR4 future looms increasingly large, as Crucial announced that it’s now sampling DDR4 server memory to channel partners who are working on platforms to support the latest generation of RAM. "Memory is one of the biggest limitations when it comes to enterprise server environments,” said Michael Moreland, worldwide product marketing manager, Crucial. “Many memory-dependent server applications are crucial to the day-to-day operations of a business, but they require higher densities of memory and increased performance." Last summer, Samsung started mass producing DDR4 RAM for servers and data centers, and in now the company is ramping up production in anticipation of a strong demand for the new generation of memory that will be paired with Intel’s forthcoming Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 products. Samsung has some competition though, as Micron also announced, just days ago, that it too is mass producing DDR4 RAM ahead of the next Intel Xeon launch. AMD's Andrew Feldman announced today that the company is preparing to sample its new eight-core ARM SoC (codename: Seattle). Feldman gave a keynote presentation at the fifth annual Open Compute Summit. The Open Compute Project (OCP) is Facebook's effort to decentralize and unpack the datacenter, breaking the replication of resources and low volume, high-margin parts that have traditionally been Intel's bread-and-butter. Today, AMD is launching a pair of power-optimized server parts based on what it calls the "Warsaw" refresh. These chips are still Piledriver-based, but AMD claims that the new core offers an optimal performance per watt solution for virtualization without breaking the corporate bank account. "With the continued move to virtualized environments for more efficient server utilization, more and more workloads are limited by memory capacity and I/O bandwidth," said Suresh Gopalkrishnan, corporate vice president and general manager, Server Business Unit, AMD. Apple’s intriguing cylindrical Mac Pro will be available for purchase starting tomorrow. The black trash can-looking computer is a stark departure from the norm in terms of form factor, and despite its many high-end components, the premier feature is the Mac Pro’s unified thermal core that uses a single fan to push all the hot air generated by said components up and out. Lenovo announced its latest workstation, the ThinkStation E32, and despite very solid specs, the machines cost far less than you might expect. Available in both traditional tower and SFF form factors, the ThinkStation E32 starts at a mere $729. What’s a fellow to do when the campus Beowulf cluster isn’t quite ideal for his Electrical and Computer Engineering dissertation project? Build one of his own, of course. Boise State’s Joshua Kiepert did just that, and he used 32 Raspberry Pi boards to do it. Intel announced a set of new enterprise products today aimed at furthering its strengths in the TOP500 supercomputing market. As of today, the Chinese Tiahne-2 supercomputer (aka Milky Way 2) is now the fastest supercomputer on the planet at roughly ~54PFLOPs. That's double the speed of the old leader, the AMD/Nvidia powered Titan at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The new system draws significantly more power than the Titan, (17.8MW vs. 8.2MW) but overall power efficiency is fairly similar. The Titan's GFLOP/W ratio is 2.143, while the new Tianhe hits 1.935. Dell announced a pair of new entries into its workstation line, the small form factor Dell Precision T1700 and the Dell Precision R7610. The former is an SFF workstation and the latter is 2U rackmount number, and together they show off two ends of Dell’s workstation spectrum. There’s also a new T1700 mini tower available. The T1700 SFF is about 30% smaller than competitive systems and is designed for easy deployment, and both the small form factor and mini tower versions of the T1700 are intended for educational environments where students are learning 2D and 3D simulations or multitasking.
