Amazon Rolls Out First Boeing 767 Decked Out In Prime Air Livery For Its Cargo Fleet
Drones aren't the only thing taking flight with Amazon's Prime branding plastered on the side. The world's largest online retailer now has its first ever branded cargo plane, a Boeing 767-300 that's operated by Amazon's air cargo provider Atlas Air. Amazon unveiled the aircraft during Seafair's Air Show in its hometown of Seattle.
The airplane is named Amazon One. It's one of 40 that Amazon committed to leasing through air cargo partners Atlas Air and ATSG. As of right now there are 11 dedicated airplanes taking flight for Amazon with more to roll out over time.
"Creating an air transportation network is expanding our capacity to ensure great delivery speeds for our Prime members for years to come," said Dave Clark, Amazon’s senior vice president of worldwide operations. "I cannot imagine a better way to celebrate the inaugural flight than in our hometown at Seafair alongside Amazon employees and Seattle residents."
This is the next logical step for Amazon, which continues to grow its already massive business. What started as an online bookstore is now a global warehouse of goods that run the gamut from baby diapers and cologne to car parts and clothing, and everything in between.
Amazon's ambitious Prime Member program offers free two-day shipping on millions of qualifying items, along with reduced one-day shipping charges (among several other perks). By developing a dedicated cargo network in the sky, Amazon is effectively adding capacity for Prime customers.
That's important because there are around 50 million Prime customers with more being added all the time. Amazon's come up with different ways to ensuring fast delivery, including its Flex program, which allows people to make money by delivering packages for the firm. It also has over 125 fulfillment centers located around the world.
