ARM Acquires Geomerics Gaming And Graphics Lighting Technology Company

ARM, a company that has become monumentally important over the past few years as light, powerful, energy-efficient mobile devices have become more common, has just acquired Geomerics. That company calls itself a leader in "lighting technology for the gaming and entertainment industries,' and the agreement is enabling Geomerics to build on their existing partnerships as well as accelerate their development in mobile. "The innovative technologies being developed by Geomerics are already revolutionizing the console gaming experience and are set to rapidly accelerate the transition to photo realistic graphics in mobile," said Pete Hutton, EVP and GM Media Processing Division, ARM. "Empowering Geomerics' portfolio with ARM's graphics capabilities and market reach will be transformative for the user experiences in future mobile and entertainment devices."

Geomerics' Enlighten is the worlds' first fully real-time global illumination technology. The technology has been the lighting solution of choice for a few titles that you've probably heard of, including Battlefield 3 and 4, Need for Speed Rivals, Eve Online, and Medal of Honor: Warfighter. Dr. Chris Doran, COO, Geomerics, said it best: "This combination of ARM and Geomerics accelerates the realization of our vision to bring next generation console graphics to mobile devices."

Really, that's what it's all about -- bringing next-gen graphics to mobile products, as that's where ARM's future truly is. By acquiring a company that understands how to produce realistics lighting in 3D graphics without demanding an insane amount of power or energy, ARM is positioning itself to lead the charge into an area that's already exploding.

As these tend to go, no terms of the deal are being disclosed, but given how hot the mobile gaming industry is becoming, it'll probably end up being a score for ARM regardless.
