Report Claims Samsung Galaxy S6 Will Abandon Snapdragon 810 Due To Overheating

Samsung is reportedly pulling a switcheroo with the processor that powers its flagship devices. Or more specifically, Samsung has decided to use its own System-on-Chip (SoC) design on its next top tier Galaxy handset instead of sticking with Qualcomm's Snapdragon line, the latter of which is said to have overheated during testing.

Citing "people with direct knowledge of the matter," Bloomberg says that Samsung tested Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 810 chip, and the results of those tests gave the South Korean handset maker cause for concern, or at least that's the story Samsung is running with. Could there be more to it?

Samsung finds itself scrambling to turn around its operations after being left with excess inventory of unsold Galaxy S5 devices, something it wasn't anticipating. As part of a restructuring effort, three high level executives were shown the door, pink slips in hand. Those who remained were (and still are) tasked with turning Samsung's mobile division around.

Part of Samsung's new strategy might include an effort to be more reliant on its own chips. Though Samsung has leaned on Qualcomm to power its flagship handsets in the past, the company may have ultimately decided that it makes more sense to use its own Exynos line, provided it can keep up with demand (Samsung also builds custom SoCs for Apple). It's worth noting that some Galaxy S5 devices already come equipped with Exynos chips, though not in the U.S.
