Dell Dishes Up Ultrathin HDR Monitors And Portable Thunderbolt 3 Solid State Drives At CES
We have come a long way from the days of using bulky CRT monitors that were power hungry, heavy, and dominated our desktop real estate with their large footprints. As if to underscore the progress that has been made in the monitor market since then, among the many items Dell is showing off at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas are a pair of new gorgeous looking ultrathin displays.
Dell is pitching these new monitors as the world's brightness ultrathin displays in their class. There are two models—the 23.8-inch S2419HM with a 1920x1080 resolution and the 27-inch S2719DM with a 2560x1440 resolution, each at 60Hz. Both have a curved backside that is similar looking to Apple's all-in-one iMac systems, but are even thinner, measuring a scant 29mm at their thickest point, and a mere 5.5mm at their thinnest section. They are not height-adjustable, but can tilt forward 5 degrees and back 21 degrees.
The new monitors also feature Dell's InfinityEdge design that we are so fond of on some of the company's laptops and 2-in-1 devices, such as the XPS 13. Or put another way, they are virtually borderless, with the in-plane switching (IPS) panel extending to the very edge of the frame.
Both monitors have a peak brightness level of 600 nits (400 nits typical). Interestingly, only the larger 27-inch model sports VESA's recently introduced DisplayHDR 400 certification, though both monitors are marketed as being HDR-ready. They also offer greater than 99 percent coverage of the sRGB color space for accurate color reproduction and have a 5ms response time in Fast mode (8ms in Normal mode). Connectivity options consist of two HDMI 2.0 inputs, an analog 2.0 input, and a 3.5mm audio jack.
Dell says the S2419HM will sell for $299.99 and the S7219DM for $499.99 when they become available on January 30.
Dell Portable Thunderbolt 3 SSD
Dell is also rolling out what it claims is the world's most compact Thunderbolt 3 storage device, essentially a portable solid state drive that measures 3.89 x 0.75 x 1.89 inches (98.8mm x 19mm x 48mm). That's bigger than a typical USB thumb drive, but still small enough to fit in your pocket for fast storage on-the-go.
Armed with a Thunderbolt 3 interface, with supports a bandwidth of 40Gbps, Dell's portable drive offers rated transfer speeds of up to 2650MB/s. We suspect real-world performance will be a bit lower, but even coming close to the rated spec would mean blazing fast file transfers.
Dell is offering its Portable Thunderbolt 3 SSD in two capacities—500GB (SD1-50500) and 1TB (SD1-T1000). Both are based on the same internal SSDs that Dell uses in its PCs.
Pricing stands at $439 for the 500GB model and $799 for the 1TB model, so there's a premium for the luxury of having ultra-fast storage in your pocket. If you can swing it, you will be able to order one starting February 28.
